Thoughts on Minny...

Getting rid of Tubby is starting to look like a big mistake. The Minny fan base is starting to go nuclear on the state of the program.

Two questions....

Does Jr. survive if Minny only wins two or three conference games?

And the big question....

And if he goes, any chance Coffey gets released from his LOI giving NU a shot. It did not look like NU pursued him aggressively and I have no idea why. Maybe it's a not starter because of academics or other.

I think his survival depends on whether or not they compete. Wins and Losses matter, but more importantly can he get his team to play hard all year? They looked kind of dis-spirited yesterday. King was a zero, and as a Captain you expect more out of him. When you hire a 30-something kid in his first big time head coaching gig, you need to be in it for the long haul because you know there will be growing pains. He needs to get all his recruits in and see how that plays out.

There is little chance that Pitino will be fired.He inherited a mess from Tubby; his last recruiting class was Charles Buggs(did not play) and Wally Ellenson(now a benchwarmer for Marquette). He has a top tier recruiting class in 4 star Amir Coffey, 4 star PF Eric Curry and a great shooter in 3 star Michael Hurt. There are 2 transfers coming- former Illinois St center Reggie Lynch and former Texas A and M wing Davonte Fitzgerald. He is playing 4 talented freshmen who will only get better with experience. Anyone who expected this team to win many B1G games was delusional.That said, if there is not exponential improvement next year he may not be around after next season.

The problem with Minnesota is there is literally no point of difference. The barn is a great place. Is it better than Marquette, Madison, Indiana, MSU arenas? You might have a favorite, but no not really. Do they have an NBA pipeline? Numerous final four appearances in a recruit's lifetime? Better facilities? Cooler uniforms? A big time coach? Is it in a great recruiting area? Give me a reason why Minnesota should be particularly good at basketball? They're in the same place as Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana... They're the same as all the others. As such, they'll have up years, they'll have down years, and they'll have a bunch in between.

Not following the program very closely, I was wondering the same things yesterday. - both, whether they regret getting rid of Tubby, and also whether Little Richie is the right guy. To my eyes, it seems that Minny has taken a step down with the coaching change.

That said, I've come around on moves like firing Tubby at Minny or Carmody at NU or Mason for Minny football or Richt at Georgia football - if you're not moving forward, you're moving backward, and a program that has to plateaud deserves a new leader. Tubby's teams were consistent in the top 40 but not in the top 10, so why not make a move for someone who they think could get them there?

Tubby's next class would have been Chicago's Alex Foster and Alvin Ellis. Ellis is bench warmer at Mich St and Foster quit Tubby's Texas Tech team. Tubby was mailing it in and it was time to move on.

Ellis was a late signee when MSU still had a spot. He is averaging 3.1 ppt but I doubt he gets much time much during conference play. He is not a difference maker.

Comparing tow young coaches - CC and JR - CC paid more dues I think. Tubby should have stayed but once that decision was made JR was a risk. To early to tell but as said the team must compete. Even though Maryland pounded NU a week ago - NU competed. Happiest i have been in a blowout loss.

Because sometimes you hire a new coach and you move backwards. I'd actually say most of the time, you move backward. For example, Illinois fired Bruce Weber, they expected to hire the next Bill Self, and they got John Groce. Worse, Illinois fired Ron Zook and got Tim Beckman. You can go on with others, Michigan running out Lloyd Carr for Rich Rodriguez. Texas getting rid of Mack Brown for Charlie Strong. Nebraksa firing Frank Solich for Bill Callahan. Miami fired Larry Coker for Randy Shannon. Miami fired Randy Shannon for Al Golden. The list goes on and on and on.

Right. It underscores the point that, when you make a decision like that, you need to *know* the number one target, and you need to have a good idea that you'll get him.

Illinois targeting Shaka Smart was comical. They wound up with their fourthish choice, and based only on a fluke sweet 16 run.

NU knew CCC was their guy, and they got him.

Obviously, it's possible you can get your guy and he won't work. Golden and Strong have not / did not work. Maybe Strong still has a shot.

Solich was canned too soon.

But after, say, eight years, the ceiling is apparent. (Perhaps Tubby deserved a few more? I didn't realize he's at Texas Tech now...)

I believe that most Texas boosters that were screaming for Brown to be fired assumed they would pay Saban whatever ungodly amount it would take to get him... I also think that Texas was planning on getting Art Briles next, and then possibly Patterson from TCU. In other words, Strong was like choice 3 maybe 4 or lower.

I pretty much agree with the rest of your post.

I'm happy to say I don't think little Rickie is going anywhere for a while. The former Minnesota AD had just swung on his third strike with the basketball program before he "resigned" after sexual harassment allegations .

1) He fired Tubby for God only knows what reason.
2) He brings in horribly-untested little Ricky.
3) My favorite: ... Get this ... Last summer, he gives little Ricky an extension until '20-'21. I love it!!!

Admittedly, it doesn't sound like it would cost the university all that much to buy him out, but I hope they're dumb enough to keep him.

CC's teams play D and little Richie's do not.

Losing 10 conference games in a row would have put a second-year coach on the hot seat at half the schools in the Big Ten. In this case, I'm really glad Northwestern isn't one of them.

No kidding. But honestly, A LOT of those losses were down to the wire. You could see some good things happening, they just hadn't put it all together yet. Something clicked after that win against Iowa...

And that something was Tre Demps ... I feel like the game next Saturday in Bloomington will be worth watching.
