Can't keep a good man down. He is now a volunteer assistant defensive coach at North Carolina. That means unpaid, by the way. It should be a lovely homecoming when they play at Illinois early in the season. I really miss him

yeah I wish he had stayed about 20 years. could count on him for a) crappy team and b) unintentional hilarity

Lovie runs a much tighter ship. Much better recruiter (hard not to recruit better than TBeck). Much better at selling the program, especially given that there is not much to sell right now. Lovie will get them out of the dumps.

Lovie is recruiting based pretty much exclusively on his cache as a former NFL head coach. If we're being blunt, it also doesn't hurt to be one of very few black BCS/P5 head coaches.

It will be very interesting to see if he can continue the momentum he's built (both in recruiting and around the program generally) if/when the losses start on the field. I just flat don't think they really have the personnel to threaten too many teams this year and, absent an influx of JUCO talent, it will take time to build up that roster to the point where they're competitive with the upper-echelon (or even mid-tier) teams in the B1G.

Hey, come on, this is a Beckman thread not a Lovie thread. When I am still mourning the loss of Beckman, do not make my grief worse by telling me that Illinois is now better off. Timmy is irreplaceable . Does Lovie know about lasagna? Doubt it . Would he get his own mothers birthday wrong on big 10 media day? Doubt it. Does he know anything about WINT? No way. Would he bus the entire team to Rantoul for a practice And turn around and go home when he realized the field had not been reserved? No chance. Will he collide with a sidelines referee, get a 15 yard penalty and crawl on his butt to get out of bounds? Not going to happen. Oh, Timmy, you are so dearly missed , sniff, sniff

In a follow up announcement, North Carolina said that coach Beckman will be required to bring his own lunch to work.

Ol' Becky is craftier than a cross-eyed fox. Bet he's still getting paid by Illinois while he moonlights with NC.

Yep. Would assume that taking another position might mean UIUC is let off the hook (though HC contracts often only include such terms for taking other HC jobs).

Wasn't he fired 'for cause' for abuse and endangerment? I thought Illinois took the position that he wasn't owed anything on his contract after that. I'm sure there was litigation, but I didn't hear anything about it.

He was also allowed to keep four books loaned to him by the athletic department and the attached box of crayons.

Perhaps UNC offered to pay him if he would go away?

You are picking on my man Beckman again. In all fairness, he agreed to work for North Carolina for an absolutely reasonable level of compensation, and North Carolina got their moneys worth .

Slamming coach Beckman? Shirley, you jest. I have already stated how much I and certainly countless other big 10 fan miss having him in the conference, and enumerated some his unique qualities and skills.

Beckman actually got Larry Fedora in trouble with the school chancellor. That guy really is a walking Yakety Sax routine.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...n-out-as-volunteer-assistant-at-unc/89373026/

"The decision for Mr. Beckman to withdraw from his volunteer position was the right thing to do, and moving forward I don't expect this situation to recur," Folt said. "I continue to put a great deal of trust in Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham and Coach Fedora to educate and develop our student-athletes and to ensure we meet the high standards we all expect at Carolina."

With an athletic director named Bubba Cunningham, how could they go wrong?

Got a link on Rantoul not being reserved? I missed that one. My Google-Fu has failed. Funny.
