...for this week's seismicity report.
(Chambers Bros, c.1966)

As you all know, Seattle sits squarely on the mighty Seattle Fault, site of a 7 Richter scale quake back in the day.
With that said, the area IS seismically active with a magnitude 4.2 quake yesterday, and a 1.8 just this morning.
So far, I and the staff can't rule out the Big One hitting the area at game time and causing Seattle and the UofW sliding off into Puget Sound (or at least filling in Elliot Bay).
We WILL keep you updated across the week as we pay our debt to society.

Comrades:

We haven't forgotten about You People, the Hawkeye Faithful!
In order to provide maximum protection as you fly, teleport, bus, walk/run/crawl to/from Friday's game, we have turned our attention to the famed Mendocino Triple (plate) Junction
The MTJ is the (very) possible trigger for the BIG ONE, when it inevitably occurs, obliterating much of the W/NW/Coastal USofA.
Specifically, we are monitoring for aftershocks from the magnitude 7.0 quake on 12-8-2024.

Updates will be provided.
In the meantime, consider buying a travel survival kit, and repenting of your sins.

Well, if you are monitoring potential volcanic eruptions for these pre-game reports, you should start including data from Yellowstone during all weeks leading up to Iowa home games.

Just saying...
YES! FOR SURE!!! We will get right on it!

In response to popular demand (see post #10 above), we have noted 4 quakes of magnitude 1.6-2.0 in the general West Yellowstone area. within the last month. While Yellowstone ("Jellystone" in old skool Hanna-Barbera cartoons) is unfortunately over a hotspot in the earth's mantle, we are not (for now) anticipating a mammoth Northern Hemisphere deflating apocalyptic eruption/quake.

We do, as a public service announcement, encourage any Hawk fans in the area to avoid any mud pots, bears, Sasquatches, or buffalo herds.

The bright, shiny, people of the Cascades Volcano Observatory (Newest Volcano Notice) have posted this excellent "Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Washington and Oregon are at normal background activity levels. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon."

Therefore, the Hawkeye nation need not fear being blown to bits on their trek to/from the Great Northwest!

AS OF RIGHT NOW (U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers), there are NO known Tsunami threats for the Seattle area.

IF you hear of a magnitude 7.0+ quake in the Pacific or Pacific Rim between now and tomorrow, DO turn around and return to the safety of the Midwest!

-------------------Currently we are more concerned about Murder Hornet swarms and the ever-dangerous Kaiju.

Speaking of volcanoes, here's another picture I took of Mt Adams 2 weeks ago from the SE flank of Rainier. The PNW is a spectacular place!

Comrades:

We feel reasonably sure that the Seattle Fault won't give way, sending Tacoma/Seattle/Vancouver off into the ocean, prior to game time tonight. THEREFORE, if you haven't started the trek out West already, feel free to proceed.

just avoid any Murder Hornets, steaming clay pots, or Yetis on your route.

I did see some sort of volcanic warning for the Big Island in Hawaii. Hope it doesn't trigger others along the rim of fire.

While there IS a nonzero chance of Hawaii geologic activity triggering a tsunami in time for the game, we feel the risk is minimal.
Do continue to alert us about any volcanic/tectonic/apocalyptic activity you notice.

'Mouth of Hell' volcano is waking up: Scientists warn magma is building beneath dangerous crater

The 'Mouth of Hell' volcano may be waking up, scientists have warned.
Researchers have discovered evidence of two magma chambers filling up beneath the active Masaya volcano.
It is located just 13 miles (20km) from the two million residents of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.

Meanwhile, thousands of tourists flock each year to see the lava-filled Santiago crater that gives this imposing volcano its ominous name.
This makes the threat of eruption a constant concern – and a new study has just found troubling signs of activity hidden beneath the ground.
While their study didn't identify any immediate dangers, this suggests that the Mouth of Hell's 'plumbing' is more complex than they had previously thought.

Understanding that system of magma tubes and reservoirs is key to spotting the changes that could hint at an impending eruption.
Lead author Lizzie Johnson, from Penn State University, said: 'Having a thorough understanding of Masaya’s volcanic activity and its related hazards is critical.'

Well, THAT ain't good!

Hopefully, Ragnarok will hold off until after tonight's game. We will discuss the matter with Jörmungandr.

There were reports of Godzilla off the California coast this week. I have been monitoring the situation for any northern movement. With the game being so close to the Pacific, the chance of him coming ashore are increased.

So far he has stayed put. If the rumors of Biollante heading towards Midway Island are true, that could draw Godzilla’s attention away from North America.

In any case, I believe Kaiju chances to be about 18%. Low, but keep a watchful eye.
