Statistically, Carolina didn't have that bad of an offensive game. They made a bunch of mistakes: 6 false starts, 4 fumbles, 5 or 6 dropped passes (a couple of which were critical), 12 penalties (several on special teams that just killed field position). But still gained 300+ yards with > 100 yards rushing. Problem was they were always backed up against their goal line. Plus, their average play on first down was Kentucky-esque. A very few times they made 10+ yards on first down but the rest of the time they were looking at 2nd and 9, or worse. All day long. Not sure what Carolina should have done to slow down the rush but being 3rd and 11 about half the time didn't really leave them a lot of options.
Good for Peyton. He needs to go, though. Very easily could've had 3 more passes picked off. Just has no arm strength anymore. After the first series, Denver only gained about 120 yards for the remainder of the game. Denver's defense scored 18 points yesterday (fumble for TD, fumble at the 5 that became a TD +2, punt return for FG). Clearly the best unit on the field. With that said, Carolina's mistakes (several forced, for sure) were its undoing.
I knew Denver's defense was terrific. Just believed that Carolina's more varied attack would negate the pass rush somewhat and all they had to do was score about 20 points to win (barring Denver's defense scoring points, of course). Think if those two teams played 20 games, Carolina wins 13 or more. But, didn't win the only one that counted.
Man, this crow is kinda gamey.
