Time to Remember

Take time tomorrow to stop and remember the families of the 75 souls lost on the 1970 Marshall plane crash.

I remember the WSAZ newscast showing the fire on the hillside being extinguished by firefighters and sitting in a carport reading the Sunday morning Charleston newspaper at 5 in the morning with a flashlight. “Rain, Cold and a Flashing Beacon” was the headline on the front page of the Local section of the paper.

Game day sucks. Fox pregame is much, much better with Urban & company. An hour is all you need.

One month before the Herd tragedy. Wichita State football team lost 14 players and coach Ben Wilson on October 2, 1970 One of two planes en route to game vs. Utah State University. Other plane with reserve players and assistant coaches landed safely at Logan, Utah.

It's tough to look at that 1970 Marshall football team picture and not think about all that was lost that day.

When a tragedy like that hits, rivalries and dislikes become unimportant. Such a terrible loss of human life. WVU memorialized it with the Mountaineers' helmets that season. Class act.
