Roto rooter doing his thing

Neal Brown is a good coach. Give him time.

Look at the players he has brought in and their development
Once he has his program for a little more than 19 games you can make a judgement

You can't say for sure until he has been there for 4 years
You said Dana was a bad coach.

So if that is the case you can't say NB is one until he has his program.
This is still somewhat Dana's program. Probably up until the end of next year.

I think we will see big improvements offensively next year. At least I hope so. We should’ve won today by the way..
There have been quite a few "we should've won today " results. He will get another year before the school starts a new climb with another new hot young can't miss experiment. The WVU way.

Don't think so, the low scoring/close game to win worked for Brown in the G5 and is his M/O. Problem is in the P5, teams score, and you aren't winning many games scoring 14 pts or less.

2020 Scores
WVU 13-OK State 27--L
WVU 13-Texas 17--L

2019 Scores
WVU 7-Mizzou-38 L
ISU 38-WVU 14 L
WVU 14-OU 52 L
WVU 14-Baylor 17 L
OK St 20-WVU 13 L

19 Total games 7 scored only 14 pts or less, 2 other games only scored 20.

Having little offense and just playing defense is his way.

When he has his OLine things will change

Just look at the players up front

One of the biggest improvement from this year compared to last was on the OLine

He needs more than 1 year then a 2020 year that has been chaotic. He will be fine!!!

The games against Texas and Texas Tech were frustrating no other way to spin it. The play calling has been suspect. I do think Neal has to learn to play the percentages more. If we kicked the field goals we would have won. But looking at the big picture the man is in his second year. He hasn't had adequate time to change the face of the program. Its year two and we have been competitive in every game this year. We could arguably have won them all. I know there are those who say they have heard this and chalk it up to an excuse. But this would have more merit in year 4 and 5 than it does in year 2. Anybody who can't see the improvement from year 1 to 2 is blind. NB didn't have the opportunity of a spring evaluation period. I know there are those who say everyone was in the same boat but not everyone was a 2nd year coach trying to build a program. If in 2 years from now we are seeing what we saw against Texas and Texas Tech then maybe the whiners complaints would have more merit. You have to remember our offense is very young. With the improvement on the defensive side of the ball I wouldn't be surprised if we are competing for the top of the big 12 in a year or two. The recruiting has been much better as well. I still trust the climb but never expected the climb to be easy. I like some of the national pundits was thinking more like 4 years. Thinking it would happen by year 2 is foolish.

The problem with that thinking...

Say WVU makes it 17-16...

Neal Brown believed that Texas could score.
Even if they didn't and WVU kicks another FG to make it 17-19 you still had to stop Texas from getting a FG

Neal Brown was trying to force Texas to score a TD to beat them.
17-20 means a FG goes to OT.

This was why he made the decision.

In his mind Texas would have scored at least something.

Score dictates playcalling.
Texas would have handled things much differently.

They had three passes in a row that should have been caught by the WR

If you understand OL run blocking.

Watch tape on Texas and then watch the first two drives.

Texas gain majority of their rushing yards on those first two drives

WVU adjusted and limited the run game pretty much after that.

Sometimes coaches change things up.
Give people things they haven't seen before.

The defensive staff does a great job.

The question becomes waiting on an OLine

Well he's had more than 1 year. At this point in this covid season its the same plate for every school out there, can't really use that excuse.

WVU still getting jobbed by refs, that hasn't changed regardless of coach--clear backward pass and clear pass interference in the endzone that should have gone for WVU. So WVU needs to put up more points to make it clear they won.

Brown's coaching philosophy of trying to keep the score low and edge out the opponent worked at Troy, not so much in the BIG 12.

Mostly agree here. Don’t know how you can ignore the improvement Fields and Addae have brought to the D. Huge step forward imho.

Brown is fine. Geesh. His 1st year went better than expected (or at least better than I expected) and his 2nd year is better than his 1st year so far. The loss to Texas was frustrating but my bigger worry re. Brown at this point is that he'll do well and leave rather than that he won't do well.

Brown should **** can his new wave data points and become a coach or move to the IT department.

I think the data stuff is good if done right but I doubt all the data inputs were considered in the decision on Saturday. WVU had 1 TD the entire game to that point and it was in the first drive of the game. I don't think there was a good chance WVU was going to get a TD on that drive regardless but they could have made that field goal. In a game where points are precious and hard to come by, take any points you can. If it was a higher scoring game then I could see going for it but not in the scenario on Saturday.

How did Browns 1st year go better than expected?

5 wins, worst running game in P5, tied worst losing streak in WVU history? Thats good?

The previous coach won 10 games , a BE championship and an epic pounding of Clemson in a major bowl his first season and that wasnt good enough.

This year, Brown has lost to everyone but EKU, Kansas, Baylor and a KSU that was destroyed by Arkansas State but thats " better" ? WVU is looking at a second straight losing season if things arent turned around quickly.

Because WVU had little coming back in 2019 (which is why Holgy left for Houston) and I was expecting 3-9 or 4-8.

Had little coming back? There were plenty of quality players coming back on offense and defense from a team that was 4 pts away from playing for a BIG 12 championship. Brown pushed out 20 or so players, many starters after he came in, but when he got to WVU there was a solid foundation in place already

WVU wasn't 4 points away from a Big 12 Championship, they were 1 head coach away. Holgy is what he is and I'm not going to bust on him but after the Iowa State game in 2018 the scales fell from my eyes. The game was an absolute mess coaching-wise. Holgy an okay coach at the Big 12 level and that's it. OTOH the jury is still out on Brown.

Holgy put all his eggs in the 2018 basket knowing that if it went really well then he could weather a bad 2019 and stick things out a few more years and see what happened. And then 2018 turned out to be a massive disappointment. A massive disappointment in 2018 followed by a lousy 2019, which was going to happen regardless of who was the coach, was a recipe for WVU to ease Holgy out. He knew that, thus he left, and for Houston.

Who would rather coach at Houston than WVU? Nobody. But Holgy knew that coaching at WVU was soon to be no longer an option, thus he left for Houston. I don't blame him and I wish him well but he's gone now and Brown is the coach. And the jury is still out on him.

KSU was #16 and first place in the conference.

Previous coach shared a Big East title. But whatever helps you get through the day. Clemson was not the Clemson they are now.

Why didn't Holgs WVU teams improve to the caliber Clemson is today? Did you expect 12-0 last and this year? WVU was picked to win 2 games by ESPN in 2019. This year picked to win 5. You continue to fail and disappoint.

Simple.

Look at the improvement on the OLine and the age of the OLine.

Once Neal Brown has his Offensive Line where he wants he can expand the game on the offensive end.

As of now he has limitations based on his offensive line.

The Texas/WVU game was simple...

WVU didn't win up front on either side of the ball.
This is needed.

Roto rooter always complained about Dana being such a ***** and playing flag football.
Neal Brown doesn't play flag football.

He is a LOS guy who understands that the box has expanded.

I hope he's successful and is here for a long time. But he wont be if he continues to treat the game like a financial report.

Show me a coach of today that doesn't use analytics to help in decisions? I guarantee all of them use it. Now Brown might over use it but so did Holgorsen.

Of course a coach should use stats....to prepare for the game. Once the ball is kicked off then emotion and flow come front and center. It isn't a board meeting.

Total rewrite of factual history.

Had WVU defeated Oklahoma in 2018, they would have played in the BIG 12 title game. They lost to OU that day by 3 pts.

So far Brown has been a bust for WVU. When Holgorsen had close losses, he was bashed mercilously for losing. Now, its "the jury is still out"? A loss is a loss, and they are mounting for Brown.

Holgorsen tried to win the BIG 12 (and more) in 2018 just as he did each and every year. He had many high caliber recruits coming to WVU, that is before WVU kaibashed his recruiting by questioning his coaching, and then losing more high level recruits after he turned down a shorter and lower paying contract than he hoped to get.

2018 was one of WVU's better seasons in its history, far from just a "massive dissapointment" and certainly much better than the disaster of a joke of football Brown and co. brought WVU last year, with a bottom of the barrel running game, and multi game losses reaching historic levels in a losing season.

Holgorsen delivered at least 7 wins to WVU every season but one, and won 10 games a couple of times as well, which simply haven't happened often at WVU. He would have won 7 games last year, where Brown appears to still be "learning on the job"--a situation Holgorsen was often accused of falsely.

I'm quite sure there are many coaches that would rather coach Houston than WVU, because of recruiting, location, weather and money--both of which Houston has in boatloads ahead of WVU. Holgorsen was offered a much better contract, in a world class city, with tons of recruiting possibilities.

WVU wasn't getting much more press or success on the national stage because they play in a league with multiple top level squads, and much more resources and better recruiting opportunities, not to mention a media market 5 times smaller than Houston, in a state 20 times smaller than Texas, so why wouldn't he leave--especially since the --cough---"fanbase" at WVU made it clear from day one they did not want him. Who would not leave that behind for more money, everything you want in facilities and no more radical fickle fanbase to deal with who didn't appreciate him delivering epic wins over Clemson, beating as many ranked teams and more highly ranked teams as anyone EVER at WVU, getting to bowls, getting WVU into the national conversation and BIG 12 title picture, etc. etc.

All Brown has delivered so far is an anemic offense, and lots of losses, after so many had declared "anyone can step in and immediately do better than Holgorsen". Year two and thats still as false as it was year one with Brown.

Brown should **** can his new wave data points and become a coach or move to the IT department.

Yes because decisions based on data are stupid..... ignorant take. The future was not known, did NB "KNOW" his Def would hold UT to 17.... "No", says the genius to the moron.

People are upset we are competing, and not appreciative NB has us competing. Considering what he inherited, its miraculous NB has this team in a position to win. Considering DH's worst two recruiting years was 2016 & 2017, both of which are upperclassmen, I think Mahone & Chase B are literally the only players from those classes actually on the field. WVU was the youngest team in all of D1 last year, which still makes them extremely young this year.

FACT: Even if Dabo & Staff started last year, it would still take them 5 years+ to get the results we seek.

It takes YEARS to build a program from scratch, and the fact we ARE seeing significant improvements this year, speaks volumes. Doege, no matter what people say about his 300 yards, is BARELY serviceable at QB. He consistently misses on the average play, and cant throw the ball farther then 20 yards. Brown is making diamonds from coal right now, and those who are to blind to see it, can go root for Marshall...

As long as we are seeing improvements, and he's obviously improving talent levels by kicking *** in recruiting, we must realize Patience is required. If Brown inherited a Senior laden team with Will Grier & company, my expectations would be different, but he didnt even inherit a decent 2nd string backup, with Colton M as the lone exception.

While it sucks to lose, those with knee jerk reactions and calling for NB to be fired are low iq, and have absolutely no idea the complexities of managing a successful organization, much less turning one around thats about to sign bankruptcy. UT has the 5th most talented roster IN THE NATION, the highest scoring offense in BIG12, which would support NB decision thinking he would need more then 3pnts....IF....IF his BACKUP FG kicker made it...

WVU fans who think we would find a better program builder then NB, should really not watch WVU for the next couple years, cause its a process, a slow at that, so sit back relax, shut the **** up, and let him work. If by the 5th year when the 2020 class are upperclassmen, if we are still experiencing offensive issues, then Ill join you, but until then, lets follow the tradition of "Patience is a virtue"...
