learn a lot of four letter wordsI’ve always enjoyed basketball, football, baseball and tennis. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve drifted away from all of those sports (occasionally still get a basketball run in). I’m needing something besides walking to keep me active. It’s either going to be pickleball or golf.
Golf looks enjoyable because I can play alone and be outdoors. However, I have literally never played golf. I went to a driving range once or twice. That’s it. Without spending thousands of dollars, what’s the best way to get started and see if I like it?
I play golf and pickleball, don't take it too seriously or it won't be fun. Pickleball was usually an open welcoming tolerable community but the arseholes are taking over and body bagging(slamming the ball directly at them) old ladies. But you need a good group to play pball with. Been golfing for 40 years, never took a lesson, still suck. Don't take it too seriously and don't worry about losing balls. Buy the cheap ones. The ball is going to make a difference on how you play. Taking up hiking and biking which you can do solo. There are usually less cunts to deal with in the woods and trails.
Sharon, PA. Take I-80 and stop before you get to Ohio. What? Where?
Same as with dating.Don't ever hit a golf ball on the range without a purpose. It's not how many balls you hit, it's the fact that you understand what is happening. Never, ever hit a range ball w/out first going through your pre-shot routine (the one you use on the golf course). This involves standing behind the ball and facing the target and picking an "intermediate target" to align your club (first), then your feet and body (second). If you set up w/ your feet first and not the club head, well good luck.
Good golf shots are struck by using the big muscles (legs, hips, etc.). If you hit shots w/ your arms being dominant, you aren't going to fare well.
Also, the prettiest golf swing doesn't win (usually). Learn course management. It's not a beauty contest, it's a scoring contest. There is an old Golf Digest book called "How To Become A Complete Golfer". Flick, Toski, Love II, Kostis, Bob Cooke, and many others. While they help w/ the swing, they are telling you how to get the ball in the hole in this book (which is all that matters).
Just got back from Naples! Awesome trip…Heading to FL next week to play every damn day, be nice to feel some heat.
Must be talking of Buhl Park. Read about it some time ago.Sharon, PA. Take I-80 and stop before you get to Ohio.
It's not long but I hear they keep it in good shape. I haven't played there since I moved away in 82. My best fried cuts the grass there and plays it regularly.
Butler’s like Cedarbrook are crowded most days. Probably not where you want to go as a beginner. Both are nice and well maintained courses even with heavy play.Butler's in Elizabeth, PA is a decent course, driving range and practice green.
Yes, Buhl Parl. Locals call it Dum-Dum.Must be talking of Buhl Park. Read about it some time ago.
When I was growing up in Illinois (same town as Mrs. @LionJim) I used to play at a little 9 hole muni ... for kids under 18 it was free before noon on Monday to Friday. Looks like its gone now.
