Any recommendations on restaurants and/or things to do?
Anyone familiar enough to recommend the good neighborhoods to look for housing?
Thanks in advance.

Hopefully your daughter can find a better opportunity. Did she get accepted elsewhere? My son did not go to school there but it was one of 20 some schools he interviewed at for his residency. He was not impressed at all. The programs director contacted him a few times after the interview literally begging him to rank them high in his match. He did not. It was kind of pathetic. our son did have a couple of friends go there. They said it was an ok experience but felt it could have been better. If she wants to go to school in Ohio there are several great med schools to chose from if she can get accepted. Good luck in whatever she chooses. It’s a tough road. Give her all the support you can. Our son finishes his residency in 7 months and then heads off to his fellowship appointment at university of Florida In trauma and critical care surgery.

Thanks for the input. It's the first one she got accepted to, certainly hoping other offers come (we live in FL, would love an in-state school ideally like FAU, USF, or UCF). I had vacation time so figured we'd look at Toledo.

My daughter thinks she wants ER medicine. She's finishing her undergrad at UF, but had enough of Gainesville so looking elsewhere for med school. Good luck to your son! Where did he do his residency?

The only thing redeeming about your post is the speed at which you made the OPs question all about your son.

It gave me whiplash, and I'm not sure if I need a doctor (even one educated at Toledo) or a lawyer.

sorry to post late. I don't know the town that well, but travel through going to Detroit. I know there is an excellent steak place in the casino which is on the river. on I-75 you pass the town (Rossford) and can exit there. There is another long standing family called Mancy's who have a top level steak and seafood with a couple locations. Many years ago I had steak there and it was amazing. I am not sure where it is relative to the university. Someone already mentioned the Packo's thing, which Farr made popular on Mash TV show. hope this has been helpful.

Good luck to your daughter, and the fact she is accepted anywhere means she is in the very elite class of students in terms of MCAT, grades, etc.. UCF and USF would be fantastic opportunities for her. I toured the USF virtual simulation center a few years ago, and was impressive. The school did seem a bit spread out. I think UCF is the newer school, and should have a ton of great resources. I like that UCF is kind of opposite all the crazy crowd side of town.

My last 3 years of undergrad were at Bowling Green 30 miles south of Toledo. (Transferred from UCSB which I hated) I also practiced workers compensation law in Ohio so I have had many dealings with doctors. Don't know much about Toledo Med school, but in reference to law school, where you went to law school has virtually no impact on your ultimate success. (Starting out there is a bump depending on which law school you attended) I will be visiting a friend in Toledo for Thanksgiving who is the CEO of a well known nonprofit and whose wife is the CEO of a division of a nursing home operation. Will ask them what they think of Toledo Med school and post here sometime between Thanksgiving and Saturday. They probably have worthwhile perspectives.

In terms of housing, I would think of taking a look at Perrysburg. It is right across the Maumee river in adjacent Wood County and has very good schools and almost certainly reasonably priced good housing compared to most major metropolitan areas.

I have a different take on the Med school than one of the posters above. In my workers' comp practice for 17 years, I came across many doctors. The best orthopedic surgeons by far where located at a clinic in Akron. Also, Ohio has an osteopathic medical school which seems to be the least stringent in terms of admitting med students. Notwithstanding that I have noticed some very fine osteopathic graduates practicing at very well respected clinics and hospitals, including my son's very good pulmonary specialist. (Son had minor asthma when younger)

One other thing to consider. Toledo is central to Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Cincinnati, Akron and Indianapolis. (Within an hour to 3.5 hours of all of these cities by interstate) Your daughter in Toledo would have the opportunity to make connections with hospitals or docs in all of these cities.

If you’re in Toledo, call Charlie Contrada, the car accident lawyer! He spends A LOT on TV advertising.

Great stuff, would love to hear the perspective on Toledo med school from your friend and wife! Thanks in advance.

Went through Perrysburg this afternoon, did indeed look pretty nice. The downtown area is quaint, area looked safe and reasonably priced (then again, everywhere I looked was reasonable compared to south Florida). Also found the "Beverly" area between Detroit Ave and Rt 25 looked like a good balance between clean/safe and proximity to campus.

Great point about proximity to other cities. Got to believe that helps when it comes to residencies.

My father unfortunately spent time at UT Medical 10 years ago. Entered through the ER and all things considered, it was a positive experience.
As @Dailybuck778 stated, Perrysburg is a good suburb to look for housing. If you were looking for a family to locate, I’d say go west into the Anthony Wayne district.
As @ClarkstonMark suggested, Tony Packos is a unique experience. Be sure to go to the original on the east side of Toledo on Front Street. From the hospital, you’re probably 30-40 minutes, but IMO, would be worth the trip.
@blion72 is spot on for a really nice restaurant with Mancy’s. They have a Mancy’s steak house (original location) close to downtown, Mancy’s Italian on Monroe Street in Sylvania, and Mancy’s Bluewater Grill in Maumee for terrific seafood.
Best wishes to your daughter and family as you go through this process.
If you really want a treat, travel west about an hour to the thriving metropolis of Archbold. All 4,100 of us. 😁

Thanks! Staying at an Airbnb in Sylvania- will check out Mancy's on Monroe shortly for dinner!

Ate at Fowl and Fodder in the downtown this morning for breakfast. My daughter highly recommends it- good gluten free options.

Since you are in Toledo now, might also want to check out Waterville. It is a step or two below Perrysburg, but it does have good housing and it is safe. Depending on your daughter's preferences, it might work out for her.

A small item of trivia for you. Jamie Farr was from Toledo and who was one of the main actors on the TV series Mash, mentioned Tony Packo's several times in several episodes.

If your daughter has any interest in boating, Port Clinton and Kelly's Island, which are roughly 40 mi east of Toledo, have very good facilities on lake Erie. I wouldn't call the fishing super good, but if you are into sailing or something similar, these areas near Toledo are top of the line.

Good call on Waterville. That’s part of the Anthony Wayne district.

one thing re the med school you might want to check on is where their graduates match residency. They may have their own hospital judging from the comments here, but there are a lot of pretty good healthcare systems in that region - Mercy has locations ProMedica, Univ Michigan MC, Beaumont and some others. They may have some preferred relationships that would help residency.

First time poster, long time lurker from the old board. I finally joined when the board switched so I figured I should start contributing. Congrats to your daughter!!! UT hospital saved my close relatives life with an emergency surgery so I might be biased. I love Perrysburg. Many great memories from the area and I lived there with my husband right in the downtown area when I was in my mid 20’s so it’s been ten years. In fact, you probably drove past my old house today! Tons of great football history in that area if you ever feel like going down the google rabbit hole on that one. I won’t bore you with it now. I used to love wearing my PSU sweatshirt around town every Saturday. It led to many conversations with Michigan and OSU fans that were actually all really positive. It also was a fairly easy drive to PSU for games. When I traveled I would fly out of Detroit because at the time it was cheaper than Toledo (not sure if that’s still the case). Next time I am in the area I will have to try the restaurant your daughter liked. Have a great trip and a happy Thanksgiving!

My daughter went to LECOM in Bradenton FL (osteopathic school) did her residency in Dayton and has been practicing (OB GYN) for 5 years in Naperville IL ( Chicago suburb). LECOM was a good fit for her based on their problem based learning and she loved her residency in Ohio. She had multiple job offerings when graduated and chose Naperville because of husbands job situation.

Being a heavy industry guy, Toledo is definitely my kind of town. Lots and lots of good things to say about the city.

Now, I don't know from med schools, but Univ of Toledo Med School is the old Medical College of Ohio, Univ took it over a couple years ago. Two of my co-workers earned their Masters in industrial hygiene there.

My Number One choice of places to live would be - without question - Perrysburg. Second choice would be Sylvania BUT that is up near the Michigan line and inconvenient to MCO. Waterville is really out in the boonies so I would not recommend. Maybe investigate Maumee, which is convenient to the school.

Everybody has to go to Tony Paco's which is on the corner of Front Street and Consaul. Worth a visit for nothing else so you can say you've been there. We used Mancy's for corporate dinners and I recommend very highly.

IMO the best thing about Toledo and environs is the outdoor activities. Lots of golf, wildlife, birds. I'm not a boater or a fisherman but if that's your thing, you'll feel like you're in heaven.

If your daughter likes the school and feels like it is a fit, she has every opportunity to be very happy in Northwest Ohio.

I'm interested too @PrtLng Lion. Our daughter is waiting to hear from Toledo as well. She has 10 decisions pending after interviews -- mentioned in another thread she got into Indiana yesterday. May have to hit you up for info after your Toledo visit.

I know multiple individuals who have graduated from medical school at Toledo during my career. They all appeared to be competent physicians. These included individuals fresh out of school starting their residency training.

But the most important thing with medical education is where you did your residency program and how much you yourself invested into your residency education. Besides being on call about 2 days a week I read and studied every evening I was home until 11 PM. There was no time during the day to do that because one was way to busy, but with work comes training and experience. I pretty much didn’t have a life for 5 years. I had a little more time during my fellowship year, but still was taking a lot of call and still did a lot of reading for my subspecialty. I did my training in the days when a 100+ hour week was not unusual, but the time spent working paid off.

Congrats on Indiana!! Not easy to get into med school. Wow she’s had 10 interviews? Quite impressive. My daughter got wait-listed by PSU med school, so I guess that means there’s a bunch of others they want to interview first. I’d LOVE if she got an invite there but not getting my hopes up.
We did a self-guided tour of the campus, pretty impressed overall. Happy to share whatever details I can.

My wife and I have been telling my daughter to expect this heavy workload. She knows but probably can’t truly relate till she’s doing it. Luckily she was a very hard worker in undergrad so already has the right mindset.
How long is a fellowship and what types of practice require it after residency?

Fellowships are usually 1-2 years of additional training. Most specialties have additional fellowship training programs offered. For example, Internal Medicine offers Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Hematology-Oncology, etc. suspecialty fellowships.

Talked with my friend in Toledo today. He said he had heard only good things about the medical school. Said that the medical school had received a 75 million dollar grant from Promerica (sp) and that it was used to upgrade the residency program because the goal is to keep residents in Toledo. Overall, it sounds like a good place for a lot of people. From what I can tell, if your daughter likes it, there's no reason not to go.

Hope this helps. Happy Thanksgiving.

She had 22 applications out. It’s a record year for applications so it’s been tough. Did your daughter feel good about Toledo? Did they talk about their residency success/give you any sense about where their students go next?

For things to do, in warmer weather I'd suggest the Toledo Zoo. It's quite good. Good elephant program. Some very nice WPA art deco buildings too.
I loved the toledo zoo. It was easy to get to, parking was simple and it wasn’t overwhelming in terms of crowds. I also just remembered the name of the nice outdoor shopping mall in Perrysburg. It’s called “Levis Commons.” They have some good restaurants, great shopping, a nice gym and a comedy club.

Yes, my daughter liked the school very much from what she saw (just going to take time for her to get used to the cold, having grown up in south FL). We were actually on campus on a whim, hadn't scheduled it around a tour but rather just explored ourselves. In the ground floor in the one building next to the library, they had a list of the states where the class of 2021 had matched residency in-- looked like about 25 or so, and in a pretty good variety of specialties. Wish I had written the stats but could probably find it online somewhere.

I'm no medical school expert, but from what I saw I was pretty impressed. The buildings were very new/modern, different buildings dedicated to different specialties in some cases (like a dedicated cancer treatment/research facility), a sizeable hospital right there on campus (next to the library), list of instructors and alumni was long and credentialed, lots of trees and space between buildings, enclosed walkways (heated!) between buildings, tons of specialty research labs, modern VR facility, etc. Toledo also seems to have so many surrounding public medical facilities (like ProMedica).

In terms of the weather, one thing to recognize is that Toledo doesn't get that much snow, comparatively speaking, because the west to east winds don't have a lake to go over and pick up moisture. If you go 100 mi east, to the east side of Cleveland they get a ton of snow. Toledo does get some snow but is not that bad. Be interesting to see how much snow falls in Ann Arbor today.
