...to slay this beast. The women and kids were out walking and came across this. it met with an untimely demise. This is on Tibee Creek in Lowndes Co. This happens several times a year there. View attachment 20215

If it were a non-poisonous snake, I would tend to agree. But poisonous - kill it. Especially with kids around.

I didn't kill it. The inlaws did. It's their place. My suggestion was to leave it be but since there are kids playing in the area it was decided to terminate the beast. Some folks don't like snakes. But just for the record you may GFY. Have a pleasant evening.

But we haven’t crossed paths. If we do, they’ll be relocated or disposed of, depending on who’s at home. Most people are bitten trying to kill them, not by being bitten unprovoked.

If you keep your grass cut and things generally in order, you really won't have too many problems with them around a house unless it's a freak occurrence. I'm with you, I never want to kill them. And those people who kill non-venomous snakes because "I hAtE sNaKeS!!11", well, the world would probably be better off with the snake than them.

If you have to be known snake habitat, make a ton of racket and knock around the brush with a big stick or something. They'll go away.

I hear this often and I think it’s BS. I know several people who’ve been bitten — all were giant surprises.

With that said, I try not to kill rattlers.

I half expected this thread to show a picture of a beautiful speckled kingsnake, lol....in which case you would get rats...and more snakes, possibly of the venomous variety. I can't tell you how many people I've seen post on FB "Hey, I just killed this devil snake...what kind is it?!?"...not knowing that it's very much one of the good guys.

I’ve got a huge burn pile where we throw fallen limbs, wood from house remodeling, etc. Copperheads love that type of thing. Never seen one.

I’ve got tin on the ground stacked up. Same thing. Never seen one. I get water snakes in my pond. So far no moccasins. I do kill the diamondback water snakes because they eat my catfish.

We found a long shed by the house last year. My wife freaked out until I showed her that it was from a speckled king snake. Caught a few earth snakes and DeKays. Good teaching moments for the kids.

My uncle was bit by a copperhead in his backyard by a woodpile about 15 years ago. He’s never been the same since and suffers from severe nerve pain that’s never gone away. It’s been debilitating for him.

Just because you "know somebody" who got bit doesn't mean it's ********. It's not. The other guy who thinks that most snakebites are random is wrong too. Geez, man, just thinking about the statement you are trying to argue with.

Live in the wood and have a pond. I have a huge lighter knot pile in a field by the pond. Have a couple fields that connect to the property that have to be bush hogged. They are always there. During quarantine last year when we were home all the time we probably killed 8 cotton mouths. Haven’t ever killed that many, but I’ve also never been outside and home that much. That tells me they are always there like you said, we just never see them. So far this year, I’ve only seen one banded water snake. That will change once school is out and I am home a lot more.

Canebrake. Nasty bite. Venom can cause lots and lots of problems. Full of both neurotoxins and hemotoxins. Antivenom is readily available, but you don’t wanna stop by the walmarts on your way to the hospital.

I get it that’s it’s a living creature and all, but just last year a lady in her late 50’s not too far from where I live was working in her garden in the yard and was bitten by a timber rattler. Didn’t get the antivenom and died of cardiac arrest. Happens more often than people think.

I leave the black ones and remove the brown ones, but that’s just me. With kids, pets, and the elderly around you can’t be too careful.

Keeping the lawn in order so the snakes prey isn't present does help keep them away. But he is right. Live near the water or woods and a number will be there regardless. When my kids were smaller we would kill copperheads and cotton mouths fairly often. My son was almost bitten simply for going to turn on the faucet to water tomatoes. 2' cottonmout coiled up next to house at the faucet.

Over the last couple years have killed copperheads on the road between my neighbors houses (both with small kids and keep lawns mowed) and a 3' cottonmouth just off my front porch. House dog was going to potty and almost jumped off porch on it. If I'm picking over a chance of my kids, the neighbors kids, or even a pet getting a serious bite, the snake losses every time.

Now, that being said I know the difference in venomous and non. The non are relocated to the edge of the yard. The venomous are not getting the 2nd chance.
