Perhaps Katz is confused between football / basketball.
Brad Smith, Big 12 AP, SB Nation, Athlon Sports, CBS Sports, SI, Big 12 coaches... on and on and on do not pick WVU last. They have been picked anywhere from 4th to 7th.
Katz should stick to Big 10.

Bob Huggins is in the midst of a rebuild after losing his top three scorers, but between rising sophomore
Derek Culver and freshman
Oscar Tshiebwe, he's got the front court many within the league should envy. Now he just needs to bubble-wrap them. Last season's 15-win campaign was marred by injuries, leading to the program's worst season since 2012-13. If healthy, Huggins' Mountaineers are a mortal lock to rebound back to the mean as a top-five team in the conference. Look for Junior College All-American transfer
Sean McNeil to play a big role in that regression.

7. West Virginia is often disrespected in national polls and preseason rankings, this low ranking seems to show a particular lack of consideration for the roster changes and the fact that West Virginia is led by one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history.

Expect a welcome return to Press Virginia in Morgantown this season. Bob Huggins now has the necessary length and depth to initiate his signature scheme, headlined by 6’10” sophomore Derek Culver. West Virginia will punish teams on the offensive glass and wreak havoc with turnovers. Huggins will be back in his natural habitat. The Mountaineers’ defensive prowess should mask their offensive efficiency issues, especially if sophomore Jordan McCabe struggles to become a reliable point guard.

Big 12 Coaches
The Mountaineers appeared to find something late last season, shedding the year-long distractions to land two of their four Big 12 victories in the final four regular season games, then defeating two NCAA Tournament teams at the Big 12 Tournament. Four of the five starters from that mini-run are back, with Emmitt Matthews showing his potential with 28 points in the upset win over Texas Tech and Derek Culver looking like one of the Big 12’s top young big men. The Mountaineers have another one of those now, thanks to the addition of the league’s top-ranked recruit in Oscar Tshiebwe. Watch out for junior college transfer Tajzmel Sherman, who could provide scoring to a backcourt that needs it.
