2001 is the greatest in the genre, without question. Fantastic story, striking visual effects and cinematography, genius utilization of music, stupid people hate it / can't understand it.

It has all of the ingredients of a classic.
And like most great sci fi it deals with existence and our place here in the universe. For me it's 2001, large gap, Blade Runner.

2001 is my goat.

Anyone see that movie Sunshine? Thought was really underrated.
Yes. And very underrated. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle. Garland made his directorial debut this year with Ex Machina (Can't pimp this one enough). Sunshine is again the kind of scifi I gravitate too. I appreciate visuals, but for me I need that existential element.

Not really into sci-fi, most of the ones I watch that I like, I don't like it enough to watch it again, so that wouldn't be good enough to quality for any top anything list for me. And hard to remember many off the top of my head that I thoroughly enjoyed, but...

The Martian
Interstellar
28 Days Later
Inception
The Fountain
Her
Ex Machina

I like 28 days later, but would that be considered scifi? I consider it more of a horror/post apocalyptic film. Her is another one of my favorite recent scifi films. I think it's one of the best scripts/stories of the last 30 years.

Yes, lots of newer movies I'm missing, forgot about Ex Machina, especially that it's dealing with AI and my favorite game, Deus Ex, has similar themes.

Also, for as amazing of a movie as it is, The Thing isn't Sci-Fi as it's main genre. Although, definitely has sci-fi elements to it, it's really a horror movie, and a top5 one at that. Not to mention The Thing has, in my opinion, some of the best one-sheets and fan posters of all time.

I wasn't sure about 28 Days Later. I consulted IMDB and they have it listed as scifi. But after clicking on the sci-fi genre, there are some mighty questionable selections for scifi.

But yes, Her was fantastic. And the soundtrack was amazing. I have a soft spot for movies with amazing soundtracks (amazing by my musical tastes that is)

Forgot this one, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

World of Tomorrow if you want to include short films

My high school and college aged self would say Donnie Darko. Alas not anymore

That's my favorite horror flick of all time. When they strap them down and start testing, well it just doesn't get any better than that.

It's my #1 horror movie as well, It's JC's #1 movie for me, and it's a top10 movie in general for me.

Just amazing. Acting, visuals, suspense, like 4 layers of horror, ending, ambiguity.. superb.

I'm still pissed they never bothered to make a sequel to The Thing. They just left us hanging all these years.

Lol...so I'm not allowed the opinion that I believe it to be not as good as any other film on my list??

It is only ranked #136 on the IMDB top 250, below many of the films ahead of it on my list, so I think that there are many more people out there who share my opinion of it than do yours. Just saying.

For the record, I love 'Blade Runner', but I don't love it more than those other films on my list.

Also, '2001: A Space Odyssey' isn't even i my top 25 Sci-Fi. I generally love Kubricks films, but '2001' is not one of them for me.
Disregard anything Z post. You are now dumber for having read it.

Ha, I did know most of those. But Ennio's score, he just did another movie, horror I believe, and I can't remember what it was. But did remember the music was good.

The ending is ambiguous, but the most plausible scenario, that I believe was confirmed by JC, was that Childs was the alien. MacReady and Nauls made it perfectly clear to prepare your own meals even down to the canned goods. So at the end, Mac gives Childs a bottle of J&B. The 1st sign that points to Child being The Thing, is that he willingly takes it, despite the warning. The 2nd being that the bottle was not in fact J&B but instead some of that gasoline concoction they made to destroy the Thing (Childs was not with them at the time). Childs drinks it with no issue, because The Thing has no idea what alcohol should taste like to humans.

Two things also point to this theory: 1. Ennio's music begins to play right as Childs drinks the gas and DOESN'T spit it right out and 2. MacReady smiling when he does. I think that's subtle film making to show that Childs is indeed The Thing.

Well, it took almost 30 years to get something... a prequel. Not sure if it made a ton, though?

Keep your fingers crossed for the sequel, one of these days. Better eat healthy!

Much more of a fan of sci-fi books than movies - but there were a few I liked

in no order

Interstellar
2001
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1979)
Alien
Contact was pretty good
Of course most of the Star Wars movies -
The Black Hole - have a soft spot for this one
Tron (original AND remake)

Fahrenheit 451 was a great book but the movie didn't really carry as well

Disappointed that there's never been a serious attempt to create Asmov's "Foundation" Series into a movie --- or series of movies as it would probably have to be 4-5 hours just for book 1

I KNOW I'm forgetting a few

About a half hour into Ex Machina (on Amazon Prime). So far it's excellent. Don't love the main character.. He seems a bit pretentious, questioning the owner of goog.. Err .. Blue Books numerous times.. That part seems unrealistic.. But he is a Dev.. So the doichebag holier than thou attitude makes sense I guess.. Haha

The Shining a sci-fi………….whaaaaa????

Just watched it again the other night with my kids --
Love the conspiracy move "Rm 231" that's on Netflix -- it tires to collect and discuss all the conspiracies surrounding the movie and what Kubric "May have been trying to tell us" with his deviations from the book

Perplexing scene.. Spoiler.. She starts out in robot gear.. Puts clothes on.. And then has a minute long scene of her undressing, like a human. And you can tell it has an effect on Alex who's watching... But really, it shouldn't matter. She is, in fact, just a robot.

Lots of great themes here.

I love the science in Interstellar and it has some great camera work and visual effects, but I hated the script. I thought the first act was just awful. Maybe my expectations were too high. I don't know.

Lots of great themes and subtext. You can watch that movie from a lot of different perspectives. Great writing.
