Thought you guys might enjoy this.

The AP just released their all-time ratings of their top CF programs since they started in 1936. It takes into account everything in the past 80 year history of the AP. It looks at championships, number 1 ratings, and also factors in down years and cycles. It basically looks at and rewards consistency along with great years/championships. Can you guess who their top two programs are ? I'll give you a hint: they're meeting this year in Norman !!!!!

tOSU #1? I would have gone with ND or Bama, but not tOSU. They certainly deserve to be in the top five, but I would not have placed them at the top.

I think they're also factoring in the down years/periods. OSU had a 6-7 disaster year in 2011 losing Tressel and several star players due to the suspensions and prior to that a
6-6 record in 1999 which led into John Cooper's firing. Before that , one has to go clear back to the 80s for a similar type around .500/below record. They've never had 2 "sub par/bad years in a row since I've been following CF in the early-mid 60s. Even their biggest haters have to be impressed with that. They've won a few NCs but Woody Hayes and John Cooper just flat out blew a ton when they were the NC favorites going into their last game. I realize that ND and Alabama are popular picks, but even those two schools have not had the overall consistency of both OSU and Oklahoma over the 80-year period that was evaluated. Just in recent years (early, mid 2000s), Alabama was a train wreck before Saban arrived.

We need to be undefeated when they roll into Norman on 9/17 and afterwards. Our bowl must be rocking that night...

I believe it was 247 Sports that rated all of the upcoming 2017 games that would have a big impact on the NC and the Oklahoma - OSU game was #1 on their list. I believe as of right now OK is a 6 to 6 1/2 point favorite out of Vegas. If you look at several of the polls and predictions, Oklahoma is somewhat of a known quality/quantity at this point - definitely one of the top 2 or 3 teams in America. OSU on the other hand, well, who knows. Urban did, however state at the BIG meetings last week that this is as talented (although raw talent) of a team as he's ever had (at OSU and Florida) and it's on the coaches to coach them into a cohesive unit. Made absolutely NO excuses for the lack of experience - put it all on the coaching staff. I do know one thing, it should be a very entertaining game to watch as it will feature a chess match between 2 of the top 5 coaches in the country.

Approximate average combined AP rank of the Blue Bloods.

Why "approximate"? Excellent question! Because there are well over 100 teams and the AP only ranks the top 25, (or given the year 10 or 20). If the AP ranked every team at the end of the year, then you could just add up all the rankings and divide by 80 years. Unfortunately the AP does not do this, which means we must estimate the rank of a team that fails to make the end of year top 25 (or 10 or 20, depending on the year). Most people would use a value of 26th for any team not making the top 25 (like golf, lower is better because the goal is to average as close to 1.00 as possible). I don't think the difference between a team just making the rankings (example: Florida last year at 25) and your average rebuilding Blue Blood (example: rebuilding Nebraska last year) is just a single slot. I assigned the average rebuilding, non-ranked year a value of 40th. If you assign a higher value (example 50) that will help the blue bloods that have been ranked at the end of the year most often. If you assign a lower value (example 30) that will help the blue bloods who have ended the year ranked less often.

I did not bother to go into also receiving votes. That would probably make things more accurate by giving teams a value of 26th or 32nd instead of the auto 40th. And it should be noted for example that the average non ranked Oklahoma team may be better or worse than the average non ranked Alabama or USC. This is just a rough estimate meant for fun/endless arguing.

The results so far, 1936-2015:

Oklahoma average rank 17.675
Ohio State average rank 18.025
Alabama average rank 18.35
Notre Dame average rank 19.65
Michigan average rank 20.887
Nebraska average rank 21.812
Texas average rank 22.087
USC average rank 22.25

The difference between finishing the year as the AP NC and finishing unranked is roughly .5. So if the Sooners failed to finish ranked and the Buckeyes won the NC this season, Ohio State would take the number one slot. That is how close all these teams are to one another.
