Instead of even broaching the subject, which you know will lead to the debate, why not just put up your list of public school coaches???? seems pretty simple to me.Originally posted by #1dog:
Don't want to start up another private vs. public debate believe me- been on both sides of that argument and its never going to really be agreed upon by opposing sides. That being said do you notice that the majority of coaches listed below are coming from schools with a 30 mile recruitment radius? And honestly I don't disagree that any of those guys aren't great coaches- they are and they have proven it repeatedly. But I have to admit that what Derek Leonard has done at Rochester High School impresses me more than what his dad Ken has done at Springfield Sacred Heart. Having restrictions to whom you can recruit to your program makes it awfully tough to maintain a consistent winner at a public school. Yeah I know so does charging $10,000. But not all those kids pay full tuition. Like I said the private schools do what they are told to do by the IHSA with consistency and I think exceptions or rule breaking is not the norm for the greater majority of private schools. In fact there are plenty of public schools which break or bend the rules. I just think the rules are different and comparing them is comparing apples and oranges. I don't think there will ever be a set of rules or a multiplier or whatever that is ever going to please both sides completely. Therefore comparing coaches from private and public schools is awfully difficult. Again- it's apples and oranges. Coach Stone left JCA and went to West Chicago and struggled plenty while Coach Appino left Rockford Boylan and went to a perennially horrific program at Rockford Auburn and makes the playoffs 2 of the first 3 years there. When I think of great consistent public programs I think of Cary-Grove, Lincoln Way East, Geneseo, East St. Louis, WWS, Maine South, Morris, Metamora, Carthage, Arcola,etc.. Those teams seem to be in the hunt for a state title consistently , and there are many others obviously I haven't mentioned. Not dissing private school coaches at all- just looking for some equal love for the publics.
