Frey's RIP thread got me thinking.

1. The Band
2. Eagles
3. Allman Brothers
4. Bruce and E. Street
5. CCR

Yes, I'm an idiot. Levon was sooo American though.

The Band would be considered Canadian, one member Levon Helm who was American.
Good list.

1. Allman Brothers Band
2. CCR- unbelievable, might as well say John Fogerty.
3. Eagles- pop music but have to be put there do to hits and selling so many albums
4. Bruce
5 ZZ TOP
You could throw Lynard Skynard, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Van Halen, John Mellencamp into honorable mentions

USA is more about the solo artist, Blues guys, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Fats, Jerry Lee, Little Richard,

The Band is mostly Canadian, though Levon Helm was brilliant.

CCR in a blowout for me. I can see the Allman Brothers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, (early) Aerosmith. Honestly, none of them are on the level of the Beatles or the Stones, sorry.

America had/has a ton of great solo artists - Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, etc. etc.

EDIT: Real Deal beat me by 2 minutes lol. Well done.

Beach Boys?

And Bruce is a solo artist with a backing band, same as Tom Petty and Billy Joel.

Just too many to only pick 5. Have to consider Led Zeppelin, Cream, Who, The Police, Allison Krause Band, Toto, U2, Stevie Winwood, The Who, The Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, AC/DC and on and on and on...including all those on your list as well.

I loved The Byrds (Sweet Heart of the Rodeo) when Clarence White was still alive.

Are you naming British bands ironically?

I once told my friend in high school I preferred British Rock. He replied "not me I like American bands, Zeppelin, the Stones, the Who, the Beatles."

How you doing?

Beach Boys

Of course! McCartney admitted the Beatles were amazed by "Pet Sounds."

I'll add that I'm a big fan of the 80's-90's "grunge" bands - Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden - but I don't think that's very popular around here.

It's the Grateful Dead, like the music or not it's uniquely American and its own phenomenon unlike anything else then, now or ever probably.

Velvet Underground
Bob Dylan
Beach Boys

Not sure what else.

Make a case for Ramonees to Grateful Dead to Michael Jackson to Hendrix to Cash to Pixies to Funkadelic. Lot of good bands.
