As far as action and accurate depiction of war, yes. But neither are great films
So is "All Quiet on the Wester Front" and "Platoon" and so on and so on. 90% of the movies about the Vietnam War paint the conflict in a negative light. Puts the whole lunacy and pointlessness of it on the big screen. I don't think I have seen a single movie that glorifies the Vietnam War.
Born on the Fourth of July is the first one that comes to mind. It sure doesn't hide the anti war theme

Goodness, The Pianist is a magnificent top 5 suggestion. And kudos to BlueThru for giving Dr. Strangelove some . . . love. War movies are not always what they seem, as Casablanca and Gone With the Wind, certainly considered among the Top 5 Hollywood movies of all time, may also be counted as "war movies".
Surprised nobody put Enemy at the Gate on their list, as it is certainly on mine. And to offer a movie suggestion, if anybody is interested, 55 Days at Peking. An old Charlton Heston film, and likely will always be Hollywood's best effort at the Boxer Rebellion. Tells the story, the effect of war more than just the showing of. 7 Years in Tibet. Another example to that end. The Pianist was truly superb.

sort of strange that all the great movies are about modern conflicts, i.e., from 1900 on. Almost none from any other war prior to that, maybe "Glory", but that is about the only great movie about the Civil War I can recall, and none from the Revolutionary war era.
I'm still waiting for a movie that makes war look fun. Killing or dying because of different political ideologies is pretty much the worst part of being human. Any movie will expose that part. Some will focus on bravery, but at their core it's hard to be pro-war.

In Harm's Way. John Wayne at his best. Actually age appropriate role. Great character name. Rockwell "Rock" Torrey. Director Otto Preminger. Kirk Douglass plays sleazy burnout. Classic scene where Maggie (Patricia Neal) takes her shoes off and rubs her feet to imply sex. War scenes with model boats kinda cheesy.
The Best Years of Our Lives. Three guys come back from WWII and struggle with readjustment. Fredric March comes back to his family, job, and the bottle. Dana Andrews comes back to a wife who's a slut and is bored with a loser. Harold Russell comes back with no hands (really).

One thing that's being overlooked is that there are a number of excellent war films produced in Germany that would have to be considered as some of the best. Some examples are:
Dresden
Stalingrad 1993
Das Lager
Die Bruecke
Der Arzt von Stalingrad
Punishment Battalion
All of these have English subtitles for those that don't speak German but I recommend checking these out if you get a chance. You can get them from Amazon.

A film like Saving Private Ryan seeks to tell the truth about war: the violence and insanity of it but by the end falls back into a morality tale of honor, duty and sacrifice.
When I was a kid, my dad would let me stay up well after bedtime to watch the occasional war movie. I particularly like the Audie Murphy movies. Sarg York was great. Of the 60's movies, The Great Escape might be my favorite. Can't recall a 70's war movie I really liked as a criteria for any war movie for me is the good guys have to win. Particularly liked movies that made the germs like like idiots. The movie "Boy In Striped Pajamas" was strange in that it was tore me: As a father, I felt for the boy and the dad. Yet, I felt like the dad got what was coming. Great movie.

Another great choiceDownfall is probably my favorite movie. It is the best Hitler depiction ever created for the big screen. Plus, this movie gave us the famous scene that would go on to produce hundreds of our favorite youtube parody.
