Greatest non-championship memory is beating undefeated UNLV in the final four in 1991. Duke got revenge from the year before and took down a juggernaut that had a regular season average margin of victory of 29 points.

1. Laettner's shot vs. UK

2. River's dagger vs. UNC

3. Gene Banks buzzer shot against UNC on senior day. Coach K's first win against UNC. That day Gene Banks handed out roses to the fans and the crazies had signs that read "Dennard and Banks, so long and thanks." Special senior day in many ways. Tried to post video of Gene's shot but haven't figured out how to do it on this new set up. You tube has it under Gene banks shot vs UNC 1981

4. The miracle moment.

5. Robbie West game winner vs. UNC

6. Art Heyman slapping Larry Brown.

7. Gene Banks dunking over Ralph Sampson.

8. 82-50

9. Chris Collins standing up to Matt Doherty when Matt thought he a a right to invade the Duke bench.

10.. Both 2015 wins over UNC.

Too many to list. LOL.

Here's some favorite non-NCAA Tournament memories:

-1980 ACC Tournament Final. Duke vs Maryland in Bill Foster's final ACC game. Blue Devils edge top seeded Twerps by one point to take the Championship. Devils went on to the elite 8, beating Kentucky for the second time that season en route.

-1984 ACC Tournament defeat of # 1 UNC by 2 points. One of the most talented UNC teams ever. Jordan, Perkins, Kenny Smith, Brad Daugherty. Heels should have lost a week earlier had Duke not blown it at the free throw line. Devils lost in double overtime in Chapel Hill.

-1986 Senior Day in Cameron. Duke beats UNC by 8 and clinches first place.

-1986 ACC Championship. Duke edges pre-season # 1 Ga Tech led by Marc Price and John Salley by a point for K's first ACC Tournament Crown.

-1988 ACC Championship. Duke defeats UNC for the title 65-61. Duke was 3-0 vs UNC that season which became known around the state as the infamous "Triple Crown" which drove UNC fans crazy at the mere mention.

-1988 Duke vs Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas jumps out to like a 20something to 8 lead. Duke storms back and beats Kansas by 4.

-1989 Duke vs UNC. Duke beats UNC in Chapel Hill 88-86 on their senior day. Heels had late 10 point lead before Quin Snyder nailed three 3-pointers to get Duke back in it.

That's just some that jump out at me from the 1980's. I'll throw some other years out later.

The Rivers shot is a great one. It is arguably the greatest finish in the most exciting rivalry in basketball. There are so many storied moments in the rivalry, when you see one that could top them all it is pretty cool.

82-50 also comes to mind.

This is a great list, and I endorse it 100%! There are really tons of great memories from Duke's past...and not just K's reign (as Sky took note of in his list).

I'm going to add one...even though it's 2 games together, but it's significant in what it meant. The great UCLA (Wooden's run) coming off a couple of NCAA championships (including against Duke in the '64 title game) came on down to the state of North Carolina in late 1965 to play Duke in back to back games. Duke kicked their asses both times! That was the last time Wooden ventured out of his backyard much anymore. That was in the day when NO ONE beat the Bruins. Vic Bubas was one tough customer, and so were his Duke teams.

Oh, and a quck edit. Anytime we beat the Heels (even thought we're doing it with regularity lately)!

A lot of great ones already mentioned so I am going to go with the Maryland game where it all came together for Zoubek. I remember his put back dunk and getting something like 17 and 19? and just going nuts.

Also 82-50, just because in the run up my brother-in-law (Tar Heel fan) was talking a lot of trash and I hadn't replied to anything he had said before hand, end of the game I took a picture of the score sent it to him and said, I didn't know we were playing UNC Greensboro tonight. (No offense to UNCG they probably would have put up a better fight)

You mean Duke went to a title game in the 1960's? AND beat UCLA back to back in the 1965 regular season without Coach K? I didn't think Duke had a basketball program prior to K's arrival to here some rival fans tell it. (lol) and who is this Vic Bubas you speak of? ;)

82-50 is pretty awesome!

However I would go with the Laettner shot. I remember Woods hitting the running bank shot to put Kentucky up and my heart sank, real low. What happened after the ensuing time out is etched in my menory for as long as I have my memory and to this day the happiest I have ever been watching a Duke game.

My personal favorite was leading Michigan 34-2 in Cameron on Dec. 10, 2000. That 12 minute defensive effort was the best ever under K. That game was the Sunday before finals, so no students had left yet, but everyone was free. It was insane in there.

My Top 3

1) The Shot
2) The Miracle Minute
3) The buzzer beater dagger shot by Austin Rivers against UNC
That's probably my list there, there are a ton of other ones. I'd rank the Dagger of AR ahead SLIGHTLY of the miracle minute, just b/c of the comeback and the fact we weren't supposed to win that game at all. Same case can be made for the MM, however we were the better team.

that 65 -66 team would have given us our first NC if Bobby Verga had not got sick. Verga is still my all time favorite player. All five of the starters played pro ball with three of playing in at least one all star game.

SKY My favorite memory of Tinkerbell was the alley from Bob Bender in the Iron Duke Classic in 1979. This was the first time that I had ever seen The entire stadium went completely silent. IMO # 20 should be in the rafters

Besides all of the titles:

1) My Senior year, watching JJ pass Johnny Dawkins as the all-time leading scorer on Senior Day in Cameron.

2) Sean Dockery's half-court heave against Va Tech (also my Senior year)

3) Rivers shot against UNC

4) 82-50

I know, Neue, it's unbelievable isn't it!:D These UK fans (and UNC fans) think that Duke didn't exist before K, but it's pretty obvious to anyone that has any sense that Duke's program didn't start, nor will it end with K. Coach K is the greatest, but they'll still roll out the ball after he leaves.

Oh, and yeah...I don't know who that Bubas character is...other than he made 3 FF in a 4 year period, and routinely kicked Dean Smith's azz.:p
I always love to see you give the UK fans hell, Neue!

All great moments, and not to be nitpicky, but the JJ passing Johnny happened a few weeks prior to his Senior Night (which i don't want to remember).

I love all these old Duke memories, but we've got some sweet ones from not too long ago!

We were dead in the water against the Badgers, down 48-39 when Grayson Allen takes over...and the incredible hustle involved in this play:

And of course...Got Stones?

Oh man, I still get shivers! What a run!

Second semester senior year was a blur, haha. That game wasn't Senior night, but it was "Senior Day" for the students. We got priority on entrance to Cameron, so JJ breaking the record in front of the rest of us from '06 was pretty awesome.

98 game at Cameron where Duke was down double digits to UNC and Wojo laid into the guys. They responded with one of the best comebacks I've seen in the rivalry.

The 82-50 crushing was so sweet.

Rivers shot was right up there.

That's the beauty of the rivalry, it almost always delivers.

Tyus almost single handedly willing Duke to a tie then winning in OT this year was pretty awesome too.

Ok what are some of your fav duke basketball memories besides championships? The three off too of my head are Sean Dock against VT, the miracle minute and rivers vs carolina

All three of those were on my mind. Though the obvious favorite for me was the Laettner shot vs Kentucky. Also his game winner vs UCONN.

But I will tell you a funny story about that Dockery shot vs VT. A tar hole buddy of mine called me right after VT took the lead and was screaming "You guys lost to Virginia effing Tech! Virginia effing Tech!" Over and over, then that shot happened and he hung up and wouldn't answer his phone for a week.

Chris Duhon's shot his freshman year against Wake was fun too. All buzzer beaters are great, but something special about it being vs the holes on their home court. Rivers will always get props for that.

Meeting Brand and Battier in K-Ville in 1999.

Being behind one of the baskets for the drubbing of #2 Texas when JJ put up 40ish points.

Final Four game against Maryland in 2001.

I'll throw out some 90's non-NCAA Tourney memories.

-Dec 1990. Duke goes to Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center where the Sooners had won like 50 or so games in a row. Duke with Laettner and Company beats them by 5.

-1991 Regular Season finale. Duke @ UNC. Both teams tied in the conference, the winner finishes first. As Packer exclaimed during the game with regards to Duke: "There's that quickness again", Davis, Grant Hill, T Hill were everywhere that day. Hurley was outstanding in hitting several 3 point daggers as Duke took a 64-47 lead IIRC in the second. Heels stormed back but Duke held on for an 83-77 win.

-1992, Duke vs St Johns in December 91. Both ranked in the top 10. It was very early and Duke put on a remarkable performance for a team that early in the season against an opponent that highly rated as St. Johns was. (Louie Carnesseca was still the coach. Malik Sealy was still on that team) Duke just embarrassed them throughout the game in doing anything they wanted. I think the final margin was only like 10 points as Duke took their foot off the gas pedal but it sent a message to the rest of the country that the defending National Champions were on an entirely different level from the rest of the country.

-1992, UNC @ Duke on Laettners senior day. Hubert Davis went nuts with 35 points. Hurley had not been back all that long with his foot injury and Grant Hill had been out two weeks and this was his first game back. Very exciting game, I still hear Valvano saying "mismatch mismatch" when Montross was trying to guard Laettner on the perimeter when Laettner had the ball. The game stayed tight but Duke's offensive firepower and experience was too much as they scored on almost every offensive possession at winning time for an 89-77 win.

-1992 ACC Tournament Championship. Duke vs UNC. Prior to Duke's National Championship run of 1991, UNC despite going 0-2 vs Duke in the 91 regular season got revenge in the ACC Title game and humiliated Duke 96-74. Well, 1992 was payback time as Duke routed the Heels 94-74 in Charlotte. Almost the exact same score(but in reverse) from the year before.

-1992 Duke @ UCLA in a very hyped matchup. UCLA was a top 5 team with Don Mclean, Tracey Murray, Ed O'Bannon and Charles O'Bannon. Duke was without Grant Hill who had a high ankle sprain. It was a low scoring game as both teams didn't play well early but as that Duke team always did, they made the plays at winning time. I believe the final margin was around 10 points.

-1992/1993. December of 1992, # 1 Michigan and their cocky crew of trash talkers came to Durham. Laettner was gone and the Fab 5 had everybody back but Duke still had their number and beat the Wolverines by at least 11 IIRC. The Cameron crowd was incredible that night.

-1995/1996. Two memories from this season. This was not a great team and it was full of injured players by years end. But coming off the 1995 nightmare they were looking for respect and they won a surprising pre-season tournament in the Great Alaska Shootout beating two ranked Big 10 teams to win it. (Iowa and Indiana)
Then later in the season, Ricky Price beat Maryland on a 3-pointer in College Park which pretty much guaranteed Duke a return to the dance as 1995 remains the only season in the last 32 years that Duke has missed an NCAA Tournament.

-1997, two memories here. Duke breaks a losing streak against UNC at home behind 7 3's from Trajan Langdon. Duke travels to Wake Forest who was on the cusp of a # 1 ranking with Tim Duncan. Duke upsets the Deacs in my home town of Winston-Salem and Duke eventually achieves an unexpected first place league finish that year.

-1997/98. A few here. Let's start in Maui against # 1 and defending Champion Arizona. Duke had a mix of vets (Langdon, Wojo, Mcleod) and frosh (Battier, Brand, Avery) The Wildcats were cocky and talking about an undefeated season in the press. Duke was up 24 points in the second half at one point before holding on to win by less than 10 points for the Maui title.
You have to include the incredible regular season finale against UNC at home on Wojo's senior day. Duke looking to become the first ACC team to win 15 league regular season games (since the addition of FSU in 1991/92) Heels were awesome in their starting five. Jamison/Carter/Cota. Heels lead by 17 with 10 minutes to go before Duke had a furious rally thanks to the return of Elton Brand. Devils won by 2 points.

-1999, Duke @ UNC with a chance to go undefeated in the regular season. Battier could not play due to some kind of injury. Game was tight early but it was all Duke late as the Devils routed UNC by 20. Then a week later in the ACC Tournament Championship game, Battier was back but Trajan Langdon missed the ACC Tourney due to aggravating an old foot injury. Didn't matter as Duke won by 23.

2000's later.

Totally forgot about Coach Capel's halfcourt shot at the buzzer against UNC. I must have replayed Dick Vitale's call for that shot at least a hundred times in my mind while shooting 3's in my backyard as a kid.

Duhon going coast to coast against UNC in 2004 was pretty awesome. Reverse layup to grab a last second victory. Oh so sweet.

I was going to say this one, as well. I went in early to basketball practice the next day and taped a picture of Duhon going up for the winning layup on all of my teammates lockers.

I also remember J.J. scoring 30 against NC State in the 2003 ACC Tournament. Down 12 with 10 minutes left and J.J. just caught fire. 23 points in the final 10 minutes.

that game was sick! I remember thinking out reign was over then JJ went off
