If you hadn't heard, Letang's 4th concussion.....and believe me, he was way down ***** Street in the immediate aftermath......resulting from a very rough (but ultimately, not dirty) Shane Doan hit yesterday afternoon.

Out of the hospital today, but it appears all currently view his prognosis questionable at best. At this point, it's probably fair to deduce he may have played his last game of the season; obviously not good, and made worse by the fact Ehrhoff apparently isn't close to returning. Guess this becomes Pouliot's first opportunity to prove how legitimate his potential is as a puck-carrying, top PP-pairing trigger-man.

I was watching the game when the hit happened. He was definitely very woozy. I, like you, figured he was out for the season and actually wonder about his ultimate return in light of all these head injuries. Devastating loss for post-season success chances.

I really wanted to be pissed off at Doan; of course, it's no secret he's among the baddest hombres in the game. But really, Doan is hardly the type (like a Brad Marchand or Zac Rinaldo) who runs around looking for cheap shots....besides, face to face, he's bad enough to blow-up about 99% of the League anyway.

Regardless, while it was anything but a textbook play.....the puck was gone, and KL was in a bad spot on the ice......the replay showed Doan hadn't even checked Letang into the boards (though I think the back of KL's head hit the dashers after he impacted the ice). Unfortunately, just a really unfortunate result from a play probably every kid in the game is more or less taught.

BTW Euell, did you happen to notice how Letang's eyes had rolled up under his eyelids when the Medical staff first lifted his head ?? Damned scary.....and it's hard not to worry about his future in the game today given his past concussion history. About the only thing positive was the fact he skated off the ice rather than being stretchered.

Yeah, I saw it fairly in depth on the replay's last night, and I agree, clean check. Don't think Doan intended to injure him...Usually I'm not one that supports the apparent epidemic in the last decade of the 'you hit my guy with a clean bodycheck, now I'm gonna fight you mentality' but I thought Downie made the right choice by finding Doan and dropping the gloves, likely just because of Letang's health history...

Unfortunately we're going to get a bigger dose of Pouliot for all the wrong reasons now...
Most teams suffer a significant amount of injuries by mid way toward end of season but this is off the charts in our case...haven't been able to adjust and certainly don't see it changing anytime soon...I'd be shocked if this were a long playoff this year.

Also wonder with all these concussions and having had the stroke, what this means for his long term future?...what a shame being he's such a talent, who seems like a very likeable guy...damn.

Though hardly the same circumstances, the Downie challenge did remind me a bit of the Shawn Thornton challenge of Brooks Orpik (which he, of course, refused) last season after Orpik laid out Loui Eriksson. Of course, the history of the Pens and 'Yotes is nothing like that between the Pens and Bruins, and Thornton (unlike Doan) was a career 4th liner whose sole reason for having a job was to take on the opposition.

Conversely, I got the impression from the get-go that Doan recognized that someone was going to come after him.....with Downie the most likely.....and decided just to get it out of the way. Of course, I'm sure he also realized he had a major physical advantage over most anyone the Pens sent after him......but Downie especially.

BTW, since I made the original post earlier this afternoon, I read a tweet from the local Penguins media about a post game comment attributed to Ian Cole saying Doan either "was running around like an idiot" or "runs around like an idiot". Sounds to me like Cole wasn't too impressed Doan's hit or his post-game comments.

Oh, regarding tonight's matchup with the Sharks; it sounds as though Perron is expected to miss it due to a lingering illness which kept him out of the lineup yesterday. BTW, it also appears some are currently calling for Beau Bennett to be sent to WBS in order to clear space for another D-man on the roster.

However, I'm reading he'd have to clear waivers in order to go to the minors; so I wouldn't think that's an option. Meanwhile, it appears Winnik is the current emergency choice to move back to defense tonight if necessary. I also wonder if they'd cut Craig Adams now.....or maybe even Max Lapierre.....to clear longer-term space for a Letang replacement.

Of course, if Letang is put on injured reserve.....which I assume would be before this Wednesday's game versus Philly.....that would clear his spot for any call-up.

Cool Man, I did notice that. Steigerwald said something to the effect that they would try to get a report for his condition and prognosis for tomorrow night's (now tonight) game against the Sharks. I was thinking, "Are you kidding me? Were you looking at the same thing I was looking at? I would hate to think his career is over, but I would more hate to see him suffer long-term effects that would adversely affect his quality of life. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic. I hope so.

Don't think you're being overly dramatic at all...this could very well be his career right here, unfortunately...he's had numerous concussions, a stroke, and a few other minor injuries....his long term health is now REALLY coming into question...at his pay rate I would not blame him at all if he ended up saying, i'm out! He is so fun to watch with the puck, and thinks the game better than 99% of D men in the league...it's a shame he's had these issues...

From what I read earlier, and as you are saying, Downie mentioned he respected Doan and they somewhat said 'well we need to do this, so let's go'? Doan is getting well up there in age, which at least gave Downie a bit of an even up/ edge...I have seen Winnik a few times here on TV, but only this year...no idea if he can assume a reasonable role on D? Adams cut? Sure!!! He has really struggled
imo...

Soon as we get one back another 1 or 2 leave for the infirmary it seems...unreal...

The notion that Downie and Doan decided ahead of time to square off is my own; I did not read that in the post game media accounts (though Downie seemed quick to more-or-less acknowledge it was something he felt as though he had to do).

You know as well as I do that both are League vets.....know how the "unwritten rules" work......and neither (Downie especially) is has ever been afraid to drop the gloves. So, I'm kinda' putting two and two together figuring it equals four. Of course, Downie was relatively understanding of the hit.....unlike Ian Cole. The Cole comment therefore leads me to wonder if he has some history with Doan; if so, interesting that it wasn't Cole who took him on.

Of course.....on this team.....it's Downie's job to fight. OTOH, I'd think Cole would have actually been a little better physical match-up for Doan (if nowhere near as experienced.....and effective.....a fighter as Downie). As for Winnik as a short-term defenseman, your guess is as good as mine as to how he'll do.

So really...you guys don't understand why these type of threads are worse than a typical OT one ??

Really ??

On a semi-public WVU forum a single other poster is named in the title...that's it. Don't get me wrong...EVERYBODY knows it's some tidbit about the Pens (who I'm also a fair-weather fan of)..... .....but come on. Unless it's a major trade or other big time news (and it has yet to be) you need to give the rest of us a break.

Share email addresses and save the OT stuff for really relevant topics.....like eagles or the Orlaco's.

Yes...the last few words of your post are the truly relevant ones...
...I would understand and empathize with your 'complaint' if not for that...also...seeing as the basketball and football are done it is ok for the fairweather fan (you apparently) to join in the conversation. Not sure how the other's feel but I would welcome more input...A different perspective is always valuable...fairweather or not...

If you know anything about me... ...I'm bitching to *****. I really don't have the desire to be a 'pretend' mod...like some others we know....

That'll change briefly after WVU gets a win in another major sport (aka football or men's basketball).

-----------------

The nice thing about the spring football game.... ....one team or the other will win.

Who could ask for more ?

Really....who would possibly consider debating against the word, 'no'...and the man that wrote it ?

Toronto... ...if I get your email address (in public or private) and then you choose to share you're actual address you'll get the first LowFatMilk Award sent to you (via USPS, UPS, FedEx...or whatever you crazy northerners use).

I imagine you're now in a tough position. What could I possibly send you ? Risk vs. reward.
