This is one of the tougher home openers I can recall outside of the old UL game day openers. This is a lose lose for us to open the season. You win, we'll you should have, you lose, the wheels are falling off.

Would much rather see Charlotte in here like the dips down the road.

Nothing not exciting about taking care of business. Shows you're growing up.

It is not that it is "tougher" than than some of the UofL openers; it is more about the "importance" of this game relative to direction of the program under CMS. Win, even ugly, and things are still "on course". And "the course" is at least a 6 win season and a bowl game. However, a loss in this one could be an enormous setback to that objective. JMO

Terrible scheduling move to schedule USM, IMO. No upside, but tons of downside and could send the fanbase into a downward spiral one week into September.

How many games did you all win in 2012(0), 2013(1) ,2014(3)? You all have had one good year! You all have some talent, but not enough to beat us. You now have a bone head for an OC. Look at how WV improved after he left.

before that 2012 debacle we had the 3rd longest streak in the nation for winning seasons

Just a guess but I think this will be a high scoring affair that we will eventually win. USM is very capable of putting up a lot of points on the board.

I disagree. They are not a cakewalk and will be considered a pretty good win if we beat them. Good test to get us ready for some tough early games too.

Long season with a lot of unknowns. I think we will win. But if we lost, I don't understand the thought the season is over. Anyone remember Houston beating louisville last year. Turned out Houston was good. Surprise teams pop up every year. Upsets happen. We beat LSU and lost to Mississippi state. The outcome of one game does not dictate success or failure of any others.

We are going to have a great season. Sit back, and enjoy the whole thing.

I don't agree this is lose lose. I think so miss has a nice tradition in football. its a quality program. A convincing win would be a mega confidence booster for the team going into the SEC

Dude they beat no one all ear last year. It's amazing how ignorant our fan base is to teams we play. They see a record and don't look at who was on it. Combined their wins were against teams 31-75. I'm not worried, it's not that tough of an opening game.

Are you talking about us or Southern Miss? Nevermind, I looked it up. The record of teams we beat was 20-39.

I actually think SM is an excellent opponent. Much better than the likes of Charlotte who we did play last year. This is a winnable game for the Cat's, but still a test. I'd rather play someone like that than someone our walk-on's could beat. Eventually when UK is consistently winning 7, 8 or more there will be pressure to replace one of our 'cupcakes' with a P5 opponent. The play-off format almost demands it if you hope to have a chance. As the conference realignments move on some say eventually every opponent will be a P5 (or 4) team.

If UK was starting someone at left tackle that has NEVER played offensive line our posters would be flipping out. Everyone needs to settle down a bit.

I have been looking forward to this game since it was scheduled. I expect a close game. If my alma mater can win, it has to be mistake free football. If somehow that happens, USM will be undefeated going into Death Valley. Otherwise, we'll go 10-2. I would think a ranking is possible with only losses to SEC schools.

UK returns the game in Hattiesburg next year. UK is the first SEC team outside of MS to play is Hattiesburg. For whatever reason, the arrogant former SEC commissioner said no SEC team would ever play in Hattiesburg. He was wrong. USM has hosted Nebraska, Cal, Okie State, A&M, and Illinois, so I never understood why. This series will be one to remember.

No doubt this is the most important opener in several years,I think the jury is still out on just how tough it will be.I am in the camp that believes Sou. Miss is getting too much credit here. They are a decent team but not world beaters. It comes down to if we are a better team than we were last season.

I definitely think UK holds the athletic advantage being the SEC, so it will come down to line play. I say USM wins if it can score enough points, and the defense plays up to its potential. If UK can run run early and often, it will be a long day for USM. This game reminds me a lot of playing Nebraska.

Anyone that thinks we can mail this one in probably didn't catch UT vs. Apply St. last night. What you saw there was what happens when players take too many things for granted. Nothing is granted in football you have to go out and earn it. Hopefully our guys watched that game last night as it serves as a reality check.

Could UK have not added a OVC school in their place? At this point UK needs 4 easy victories and then whatever they can pull out of the SEC. I'd even drop UofL until we have 3 or 4 winning seasons.
There is this dichotomy among UK football fans. Some of us want to schedule enough crappy teams to get to a bowl game, but remain the laughing stock of the SEC. Others want us to get to the point where we actually compete in the SEC. Everyone here seems to be much younger than me because they look so fondly of the Brooks years as if we were good at football because we scheduled ourselves into bowl games. Sure, there was an occasional big upset (think 2007), but by and large, even in our bowl seasons we sucked against SEC teams other than the other bottom feeders. I would rather build the program, play good teams, be tough like we were in the late 70s and 80s, and actually build a program than can compete. That is why I like our current coaches. They are actually recruiting SEC talent that we have not signed in many years. We can make fun of UL all we want, but in the last 25 years, they have been willing to play good teams and have gotten better doing it, and have beat SEC teams in bowl games. We can't beat SEC teams at home. The bigger problem is not scheduling ourselves into a bowl game hurts recruiting. I'm not really sure of the answer, but I know I don't enjoy getting ridiculed when we go to a bowl, but are 2-6 or 3-5 in the conference and we act like we are good.
