Do you think Towles should have stayed ?

Reading about Gran and his Offensive style, it seems a perfect fit for Towles. It seems that Gran runs a Multiple Pro Style set offense and not a spread.

So, it seems like Towles would have really fit in well and much better with the new OC. And, Gran brought in a QB coach, Hinshaw, who by all accounts has done a great job at Cincy.

I just think he should have waited to see the new OC before he left.

It was best for him to leave. good for him & also a new start for Us. He had a lot of trouble with short passes, and not leading backs , with screen passes. Wish him the best.

Have to agree, best for all concerned that he moved on. Fresh start on all sides and Patrick may not have really thrived with the new OC all that much either. Too much going on for him to stay here for another year and I wish him well at BC, as I have nothing against the kid at all.

I think it would have been best for Towles if he stayed, knowing what we know now. But....it seems like there was dissension between Stoops and Dawson; and Towles sided with Dawson. So Im not sure there was ever really anyway to come back from that. Probably why Towles said he made his decision to transfer weeks before it the season ended.

I think the BC move is best for all parties. I really like PT and wish he would have been able to be our winning QB plus the kind of signal caller with enough talent & steady hand to counterbalance the decision making of first-time coaching staff. He wasn't unfortunately. I got the impression in interviews that he had somewhat of a devil may care approach--His words: "just throwing it around out there"....."just have to make enough plays to win at the end of the game" (after an EKU comeback where we should have dominated gun-to-gun)....made mention about the importance of "fun" to him while on the field. He reminded me of Nuke LaLoosh before Crash Davis turned him around.

I know very little about BC's team, talent and staff. I believe PT has some talent and wants to do well, but he needs a more draconian coaching style to get his attention and get him focused on technique, progressions, throwing the ball away when necessary, etc. I never felt as though I saw improvement w/PT and as I said in previous posts.....he has a ton of starting QB "reps" in practice & games.....so he is either uncoachable or uncoached/undercoached (e.g. multiple OCs, no QB coach-level focus, etc). It is likely a combination of both. This season will tell......for PT and Barker.

Pat needed to move on. I was a big Towles supporter but I agree that it was time. Whatever happened in that locker room closed the door on his possible return. He will do well at BC. With their defense he can be a difference maker up there. Good luck to him.

Hindsight is always 20-20. He made his decision based on what he knew at the time. Hopefully it works out well for him at BC. I'm sure a lot of us will be following what happens with him there.

Yes, IF he was told he would have a shot to in the starting job ...if he was told DB was the starter automatically no know that I blame him...what I don't understand is MS said that he thought he could still play on Sundays , but evidently not good enough to compete for the starting job at KENTUCKY...head scratcher for sure

This would have been his 3rd coordinator in as many years. I think Towles did a great job with what was available. We have some memorable wins over the last couple years. However, if this is the right fit at coordinator, it's probably best a fresh set of legs that will be around for a few years to fully be involved and learn the system.

They all had a chance to compete in spring...the job is on the line every day, every rep. Barker was just named the spring starter, which Stoops confirmed meant he would get the first snaps to start off practice.

Of course there was, but if he admitted it then Towles would have taken some more blows. Stoops said that to protect Towles from further wrath of some fans. He also said nice things of Towles as he walked out the door. Stoops took the high road.

Coaches at every university tell certain players that they won't start or won't see many snaps when they are encouraging a kid to transfer out of the program. Some schools just do it more than others, see Tennessee...

I believe Stoops when he says he would have loved Patrick to stay for depth at the position, but completely understood why he was moving on.

You may read different posts than I and listen to different call-in shows, but a portion of the fan base was slaughtering him even before the season. New starts can be healthy. I doubt PT, with his adept way of saying the right thing, would publicly say it, but I know college athletes get tired of the couch potato commentary.

LOL - there were people on here thinking he could be a first round pick and in the Heisman room before the season...they honestly had UL fan type beliefs in the dude.

He wasn't very good. He QB'd 2 nice wins in 22 starts.

I'm sure they all do

but for Pat what caused him to leave had more to do with being tired of O linemen & running backs whiffing on blocks, and wide receiver alligator arming his passes

(maybe intentionally)
(or at least not 100% best effort)

I don't know about Towles staying, but Phillips leaving is the one that was odd to me - he sounds like a guy who could have had a shot to play if Barker couldn't be accurate with the short-to-intermediate passes.

Of course, if he goes somewhere he believes he can be the clear starter, then who can really argue...

Towles seems to be a good dude, with all the physical tools, but it always seemed to me like something was off mentally during game-time. It was like he was jittery, nervous, or simply did not have the ability to do it mentally in the SEC. I hope he succeeds at BC.

Towles quit on UK...never care to see those types stay. All he had to do was beat crappy Vandy and he'd probably still be the starting QB at UK.

The only reason for him to stay would have been if he had known Gran was going to run the QB more.....Towles was indeed fast for his size....arm accuracy another story

If his offense is a perfect fit for Towles, then it's a perfect fit for Barker. There isn't a whole lot of difference between those guys. It's not like the difference between Bolin and Jackson at UofL. Towles and Barker have similar styles and skill sets which was evident when we made the switch.

He was given 2 seasons to improve as a QB but unfortunately he couldn't do it for whatever reason. Now its time for Barker or someone else to get there turn to see if they can succeed. There's only so many opportunities a coach can give a player before he has to realize maybe that player just isn't going to get it done and move on to the next one and I think Towles and Stoops knew that time had come.

No Towles shouldn't have stayed. He made the best decision for him and the team. It seemed to me that half the team was on the Towles train and half the team wasn't. He just wasn't consistent enough and I don't know that he ever will be no matter what system he's in. I hope he does well at BC and goes on to win a bowl game. But it was time to part ways.

That tends to happen when you throw as many IT;s as TD's. Not one fan threw any of those IT's for Towles. I do not blame him for moving on but his poor play was not because he was treated poorly. Towles turned Booger McFarland from fan to a non-believer with his play.

Towles didn't endure anything like Hartline did but Hartline found a way to perform quite well even though he was not as naturally gifted like Towles.

Hartline was mentally tougher than Towles who had more ability but just couldn't gut it out. As a political science major he should have been able to figure out which side of the fence to be on in a clash between the HC and OC.

No one suggested the fans were responsible for his play, good or bad. No one said he did not throw those INTs. Those are completely different subjects and a defense to a case never made.
