Transfer portal - eligibility

who validates whether a player in the transfer portal database is actually eligible to play? is that just buyer beware? players could be out of eligibility or academically ineligible. The portal database does not seem to contain that type of data. Originally, I thought the original school was responsible for clearing the player to enter into the TP.
