Thornton wanted to be a pro, not a Dukie.

This is always the challenge for star players coming out of high school (especially if they see themselves as one-and-done). And, unfortunately, it's a mentality that actually hurts them.

To have the dream of being a pro is fine. But, to really succeed, you have to mentally set that aside and focus on the present. All freshmen coming in would do well to think about making Duke better (that sounds self-serving but it's really not - it's true in every walk of life). They have to focus on becoming a good teammate and be centered on winning for Duke - be committed to the program and team. What happens when their hearts and minds are on that is they work hard, even harder than they otherwise would, because they are not working out, practicing, and playing for themselves but for others.

As that more selfless focus happens, the ironic result is - they become better human beings and better basketball players. This is a struggle when young and old. But, it is the kind of message these kids need to have ingrained in them and need to focus on. I think you saw that in Grayson as a freshman - he got very little PT in spite of flashing talent and athleticism - even in the NCAA tournament he was very limited until the final four. Notice:

Round / Team / Minutes / points:

1 / RobMorris / 12 / 5
2 / SDSU / 9 / 3
3 / Utah / 9 / 1
4 / Zags / 3 / 0
5 / MSU / 17 / 9
6 / Wisc / 21 / 16

Obviously, that's an unusual occurrence to go from 3 minutes and zero points in the elite 8 win, to 21 minutes and 16 points in the final, but it does illustrate the kind of result that can happen if a player keeps his head up and his nose to the grind-stone and plays for the team not for himself.
