From a perspective of Brown's psyche as a coach. Do you trot Brown out there opening drive in hopes that he can find some type of rhythm knowing that he is going to be anxiety ridden with fans on his ***, or alternatively do you put Hecklinski in to detract from that scenario? This is all to say, I'm just good with naming Heck the starter.

I’ve posted here before that there are multiple reasons why Heck should be the starter, and you pretty much covered it. I am genuinely concerned about what the crowd reaction would be if Brown trots out for the first series. The coaching staff MUST recognize this. If they are really equal in practice and are going to get about the same playing time in this game, why do this to the young man?

it is truly a win-win if Heck is the starter. If he does really really well, and we have a big lead, then the crowd will already be in a good mood and ready to see how the offense does with Hank at QB. If Heck does not look good, then the crowd will be anxious to see what Hank can do.

if Hank starts, I’m afraid that the crowd will just be waiting for him to do something wrong. Anything short of looking like Patrick Mahomes will not be good enough. If he throws one at the feet of the RB on a screen pass, there were almost certainly be boos.

I guess all of our questions will be answered in a few days…

I highly doubt that people are going to be on the edge of their seats waiting to boo anyone. If either QB goes out and stinks up the joint and the offense struggles to score points against NIU you might hear a few, but it won't because the stadium thinks that Hecklinski should be starting over Brown.

Personally, I think Sullivan should be the first to be trot out. That would be cool.

This is what makes no sense to me. Why so complicated? Seems to me the more complicated, the greater the likelihood of a mistake, or for something to go wrong. That would appear to go against Kirk’s biggest priority…not making mistakes.

It’s no wonder our QB’s struggle and the passing game sucks.
What's making it complicated for you?

Bessinger ... highest rated Guy.

On a semi-serious note, I haven't felt this good about our QB depth in many years. The more I see of Lester the more I like.

Huh? I was speaking in reference to Lester talking about how complicated the offense is….more so than most teams. (the part that I highlighted in the post I was quoting)

Or do you think it’s wrong to honestly wonder why Iowa, who has struggled on offense lately, would have an offense that is apparently more complicated than most teams?

I disagree. I think fans are fed up with the wrong decisions on qb's by Ferentz. And right or wrong but Hank has already been found unacceptable by a portion of the fanbase. This is partially due to Hanks' play when fans have seen him and years of pent up frustration at Ferentz' qb decisions.

I think the vast majority of fans don't care who starts since KF already told everyone that both are going to play. Now if both QB's suck and Iowa isn't scoring things might get ugly as in.....

Hey I just found a clip of Brown at practice earlier today. His footwork looks good to me.

What year was it when KF played 2 QBs in the first half and then trotted out the lesser of the 2 to play the entire second half??
If one of the QBs clearly shines above the other and isn't awarded majority playing time ... yeah, it could get ugly.
My fear? KF luvs tall statues. Gronk (whose Gronk?) was the first dual-threat QB since Banks. Kirk prefers prototype NFL QBs over guys who run around the field.
We know that cuz before 2025 he had signed a few DT QBs, and they never gotta a sniff.
It's possible Lester is having a positive impact on the fossil.

A healthy Beathard was a much better runner than Gronowski, unless you're running QB sneaks and then it's a tossup between him and Stanley.

I’m hoping each gets to throw 12-15 times and a clear winner emerges. I don’t care who it is.

Bottom line: there needs to be a clear #1 for the Iowa State game.

I'm strictly going by the rushing stats, but yeah, everyone on hear is going to suggest Tate; Beathard; etc was a dual threat.
That's fine. IMO there is (scrambler-threat) and (dual-threat-by-design).
I honestly can't remember Kirk referring to any of his QBs as dual-threat? Though I think Lester did. Maybe Kirk has said "there is a dual-threat element to him" or something like that.
Either way, I'm standing by my assertion KF prefers statues to runners.

My point was simply that I wouldn't classify Gron as a dual threat either. Yes, Kirk has a preference for "pro style" QBs.

to be fair we should play them both simultaneously. i saw this drill where both guys are standing next to each other and snaps alternate...hope to see the same formation on saturday.
:)
You should talk to Kirk. He is looking for a way to get through the season without revealing to fans which QB he likes as QB1.

Hmmmmmm, rushing:
BB - 423yds and 5 TDs in 2002 (Heisman runner-up)
Gronk - 545yds and 16 TDs in 2025

Kinda feels like I'm looking at a pair of Dual-Threats. On the other hand Beathard had negative yards rushing in 2016.

Well the O line did win the Joe Moore last year so his rotations seem to have paid off.

How do you know they were neck and neck in practice? Maybe Heck's best day was Kid's day and Brown has looked better most of camp. I also don't understand your seniority comment. They both have the same time on campus and neither has started a game.
I guess…because the Iowa coaching staff has said those two QBs were essentially neck and neck in practice.

"fans have found him unacceptable". You mean in the 30+ snaps they've seen him play in an actual game? By "fans" you mean the dozen or so vocal posters who condemn anyone Kirk decides to start? I'd ask if there was ANY chance we could actually see both of these guys play before we go off the rails, but we all know that's not going to happen.

This. Like I said if they give one guy the 2nd half, then I hope they keep letting him throw at each level no matter what the score is.

KFZ is not hard to read. He ran Brown out 1st at kids days for a reason and those reasons weren't going to change after that. He's smart enough to know running Brown out will not be a hit so why say anything. I do trust our Off Coordinator so I don't think this will be an issue long-term (something that didn't happen in 2008)
