Can’t predict anything about the season from an exhibition. We look like we have the physicality to compete though at least.

And oh yeah - Buchanan deserves a shout out. He looked excellent today, and in person, taller than 6-5. Maybe it’s the hair.

Questions for those who have watched it ( will do later on You Tube (less commercials )

1) Why only 4 minute for Syndor ?

2) Jones box score stats look pretty steady, what are the thoughts ?

3) Thoughts on Miteo vs Ware, neither had much court time

4) Thoughts on Smith O today, boxscore has a lot of missed shots

Thx

FYI. There weren’t any commercials on BTN+. During the play stoppages for timeouts they show what’s happening on the court.

1. Working way back from ankle injury. Likely will have his workload ramped up over the course of Nov.

2. Nice player. Think he’s still finding his role for us offensively, but seems to be a reliable 2/3. Seems solid defensively, was swapping offense / defense with Smith for stretches in OT.

3. Both got run in the 1st Half, but only Miteo saw minutes in the 2nd Half / OT. He’s built like an ox, should be a strong rebounder. Looks a bit raw defensively but moves decently for his size, haven’t seen much on the offensive side yet. Assuming the staff sees him as having the higher ceiling versus Ware. Curious what Buca’s return does to their minutes.

4. Thought he largely got his shots up within the flow of the offense which was promising. Couple tough mid-ranges fell for him, as did a big 3 down the stretch. Not overly concerned with the inefficient day.

Sydnor working back from ankle injury, not sure if he disturbed it a bit again, he was def getting back in the swing of things.

Jones was good, awesome 6th man. Good D, good shooter. He’s not super explosive which on a team that kind of requires self creation he has struggles but I think he’ll be just an awesome asset to have.

it seems they’re really hoping Miteo earns the backup 5 role, seems they’re getting him ready for the moment as much as possible. Both did okay today, but there is definitely a gap between them and Gurdak.

Smith I thought was good, was surprised on some of his misses though and idk if he’s gonna be a great self creator but def helps the floor spacing concerns.

So far we resemble both the good and the bad of the more successful teams in the PIke era. Just exhibition, but we:

1) sucked at outside shooting
2) made up for it on the offensive glass
3) solid defensive rebounding
4) suck at the line down the stretch

I’m optimistic that we’ll have some better shooting days which hopefully could mean upsetting better teams could be possible. Looking forward to the season to see what we can do. I wonder what kind of record the bubble cut line will require with a 76 team field. 15 loss teams in play?

Gotta consider the conditioning aspect too with this being mid-October. Francis I think clearly was working back to full fitness and was shortarming everything from the second half on

Other than lack of 3-pt shooting, I'm not sure how anyone can come away from these two exhibitions with any major realistic/reasonable complaints.
Looking forward to the season, it at least looks from the eye test that we have hope. We thought football might have hope, but that was all smoke and mirrors and limited release of info creating false hope. With hoops we saw them play twice and it’s much more encouraging than last season. Not going to call us a tourney team just yet, but it’s encouraging and looking forward to watching them play as the season feels hopeful.

I thought that too. They said it was a wrist injury right? So it makes sense. He does need to be smarter and realize when defenses adjust their attention to him - someone else is going to be left open. He said in the after game presser he has to be smarter so I’m sure he knows. Definitely some valuable film to watch.

We have no threats from deep.

I mean, we know that’s not true. We have multiple veteran guys who have shot respectably from 3 on high volume throughout their college careers. It’s not going to be the main focus of our offense, but eventually when teams overplay the defense on dribble penetration there will be kick out opportunities and we’ll see more 3 point attempts - hopefully open ones that we’ll make at a decent percentage.

Except, nowadays, its almost impossible to be a winning team without 3 point shooting unless you are excellent defensively. This team is not that either.

We actually don’t have anyone who figures to be in the main rotation 1-4 who has historically been “bad” from 3 (except Lino but the poor shooting for him was heavily skewed towards his first 10-15 games as a frosh). No - we don’t have a roster full of 40% types, but just because we didn’t shoot em well or attempt many against 2 teams who thrive on pushing pace in transition, doesn’t mean we should assume we’re going to be awful all season long. We shouldn’t be that bad from deep.

Oh, we have guys that are good enough, but if we don't take them it doesn't matter. Looks like Gurdak is going to take many more shots than I expected, which will cut down on others. Lino still doesn't really lead to open three's yet. Tariq will still dribble down the clock before shooting or dishing, limiting shots further.

If St. John's had an even close to average shooting day from 3 we would have lost this game by double digits. We're better than last year because there's nowhere to go but up. Better in the post but 3pt D and ball movements are still atrocious.

I’m actually not sure what game you were watching honestly. Shot selection was excellent in the first half despite only taking 4 threes. There’s nothing wrong with Tariq taking floaters in open space. He hits them as efficiently as lay ups. In terms of him dribbling too much - I didn’t see that either. The issue in the second half was that A) we weren’t great breaking down the press and it left us with little time on the shot clock and B) Tariq was well covered and we actually had trouble getting him the ball. He took a bunch of shots in mismatch situations we’d love to have back where he got blocked that cost us the other way. Need to fix that. But halfcourt ball movement really wasn’t bad overall.

Didn't comment on ball movement, other than we don't create looks from three - although 13 assists on 89 shots is pathetic, and we made three less shots but had 12 less assists than St Johns, who spent half the game looking like they just met.
Tariq's game is fine, although I don't love paired with Lino.
Was good to see Jones do a little more ball handling, although not really against high pressure.

The bar is really low so I think people are generally happy that maybe we won’t be horrible and have the potential to be average. I’d define average as 8-10 big ten wins.

However, I rewatched the 1st half vs St John’s and saw a lot of high degree of difficulty shots going in that we all know will be difficult to sustain.

We can survive that if we get some sort of rim protection in the paint on defense (Buca or Sydnor?), but if not we’ll succumb in most games when our scoring inevitably runs cold.

I think the team may have some moments and should be somewhat better than last year, but that may not necessarily mean more wins.

So your posing a hypothetical for SJU having an “average” shooting day and assuming we’re stuck at 19%? Why? Ok wait - I get it. It was clearly the SJU defense that forced our bad shooting while theirs was just bad luck. Of course that’s why.

Must explain the FTs too. We had a 91% FT shooter go 50% from the line. Another 90% FT shooter go 67% along with a 74% FT shooter going 25%. Tariq, Smith and Powers a combined 7 of 14 from the line. Was that St John’s D?

I thought the 3pt D was really good today, there’s a reason they missed so much. Sorry, I don’t think Babacar Sane doing contested step back three pointers should be given the benefit of the doubt that it’d go in at 33%. The D I thought for the most part was awesome. We were evenly matched with St. John’s, as evidenced by the score.

I’m not calling you a liar but the play by play says that can only be true if your categorizing Tariq’s first half floaters as “high difficulty shots”. I seem to recall most if not all of those being uncontested in open space where he’s money…. Until half two where SJU adjusted their coverage on him.

According to the play by play, every non-three point FG by Rutgers in the first half outside of Tariq’s floaters was a lay up, put back or tip in - except one Gurdack midrange.

One random thought that crossed my mind yesterday was...how many times in the Pikiell era have we come out completely flat in these "neutral" games played in large empty arenas? Like almost every single one from memory. So, it was encouraging to me from that perspective.

(and yes I know it was a SJ home game but the place looked and sounded empty).

I agree - I didn't think SJU got many open looks from 3-pt range. Generally, I felt like our defense was pretty well connected and NOT a sieve like it's been the last two years. Yes, we are lacking rim protection right now, but we made up for that with gritty on-ball defense and smart help defense.

Oh we sucked on offense in the second half. For sure. Someone on the TKR podcast said Tariq was holding his wrist in the second half so maybe that was a factor. But whatever it was we had a rough stretch there for a while and the press seemed to really bother us.

All I was saying is that I don’t think it was the case that we just got lucky with St Johns simply missing shots on the other end. When we left guys open, it was mostly their under 30% three point shooters which you can live with.

By reading these boards you would think we have lost every game in the BIG and not competitive
Yup some folks either didn't watch or just want to hold onto the negatives from last year.. Really, I'm guessing many never thought we'd be competitive with Villanova and St John's, but we were.
