There is no consensus threshold for acceptable loss. We always accepted that the flu would kill tens of thousands of Americans on a yearly basis. Nobody was ever expected to dramatically alter their lives to prevent that. Why not?
At what number did we go from not caring much at all to possibly caring too much? Set the number/percentage and be transparent about how we arrived at that figure. If it's not a possible extinction event and not even remotely close to one, then we need more transparency about why we are being forced by the government to act the way we have been.

I don’t necessarily agree with pulling the J&J vaccine, but again I’m not the expert. Regardless, it was the FDA/CDC, not Fauci who pulled the vaccine. As a federal government employee I’m not going to defend their decision to pull it. Unfortunately when it comes to federal agencies and bureaucracy and the political posturing of decision makers, things are often done, for what seems like the right reasons, that are not really for the best. Decision makers often are too concerned about the political risk of a life/death decision that they take the conservative approach, which in this case may lead to more indirect deaths. My guess is that’s what happened here.

That's an oversimplification. Without "some" controls we would have seen a calamity worldwide. But once we figured out the types of things and events that drove the spread we needed to use a scalpel to dictate public policy, not a machete. The reality is that human behavior, not governmental action controlled this pretty well during the surge. But make no mistake, some metro areas would have been a disaster if people had not changed their behavior.

COVID isn’t capable of producing a calamity. That’s not opinion - that’s based on IFR numbers from the CDC and WHO. It’s just not deadly enough to lead to bodies piling up in streets. If someone dies with a standard cold and we counted that as a common cold death, how many deaths per year would that cause?
And I agree with you wholeheartedly that people modifying their behavior on their own was much more helpful than any government edicts which is the entire argument for freedom - present the public with as much information as possible and allow individuals to make decisions that are best for them and their health.
Governments’ responses to this has been the actual calamity and has led to more despair and consequences than COVID on its own was ever capable of. Which goes back to my original point that we have seen an unprecedented power grab by government in this country.

I agree with you re: government action. Humans figured it out pretty quick. Those who thought it was fake have mostly gone away. It's sad that we had some who thought it was fake and others who thought we needed to stop the world for it. But that's 2020/2021 for you... common sense rarely prevails.

Regardless, nothing close to that occurred anywhere else. And considering the evidence that has come out of Sweden and Florida, lockdowns aren’t the reason to thank.
It seems we’re just going to disagree on the severity of COVID. Examining calculated IFRs, it’s just not THAT BAD of a virus to justify what’s been done to our society.

I think that's the answer. IT was a really bad virus where, short of total western European style lockdown, can't really be controlled other than human behavior changes, but once society figured out how to function close to normal without lockdowns, we were able to control it.
To me, that's where we are. It was really bad. Something nobody on planet earth had ever seen before in terms of infection and death... But it's also something that our "response" was far too long. By May of last year humans figured out how to operate in a way that wouldn't overwhelm the hospital system.
Old people locked themselves down and the rest of society was careful enough not to have it turn into a complete disaster.

The Spanish Flu killed up to 50 million worldwide. That's more than 10 times as many deaths as this virus has caused in gross numbers, and up to nearly 75 to 100 times per capita. If I wanted to nitpick, I would also say that some people alive today actually were alive at the time of the Spanish Flu, though I get your point.
I agree with you that whatever has happened, there is enough information to handle it reasonably and appropriately. And enough vaccine, as well.

lol that is 100% false. He’s the highest paid employee out of the millions of people employed by the federal government, making well over double what you claim he made in just his salary alone. That doesn’t count book deals or investments. He’s worth millions and millions.
I did not realize he had a special salary for his position. I guess that shows the value he brings to the government. I have no issue with his 400k salary or the fact that he’s worth “millions and millions”. He’s a leading scientist in the world with a degree from Cornell and 53(!) years at NIH. Fact remains he’d be worth much more in private industry. He cannot, in his capacity, own investments that would create a real or perceived conflict of interest. So any concerns about him capitalizing on the virus for pay is misguided.

Go look at the chart. It's on a 7 days cycle, not 3 or anything else, at least partially due to states reporting differences for weekends. Of course you can pick out 3 days in a row when the average is less than 500. And regardless, you picked a day including 800+. But yes, it's not that hard.
