Greens running at 16 on the stimp! No way under-par wins this week!
Played the course 20 years ago… Tillinghast design… those greens were not designed to be cut to run at 16. Will be interesting to see how many violations for ball moving there will beI prefer greens that are a bit quicker than slow ones. But not at the speed of the Oakmont greens.
Plus with their rough which will make it hard to get any backspin, it will be difficult for guys who stray from the fairways to get into good position on those greens.
The rain on top of the 4.5 inch rough. … no thanks!Going to be brutal Thursday and Friday for sure. May get some weekend rain to soften a little bit.
Much more Fownes than Tillinghast after the de-forestation years ago.Played the course 20 years ago… Tillinghast design… those greens were not designed to be cut to run at 16. Will be interesting to see how many violations for ball moving there will be
I don’t believe Tillinghast had much, if any, design input into Oakmont. Almost all original and early design changes were by Henry Fownes and his son, William.Played the course 20 years ago… Tillinghast design… those greens were not designed to be cut to run at 16. He was definitely involved w/ Oakmont. WC Fownes would re-design the golf course constantly, and Tillinghast and Emil Loeffler both worked w/ WC Fownes.I don’t believe Tillinghast had much, if any, design input into Oakmont. During the 30’s, Tillinghast was a consultant for the PGA of America. He toured the US by train to give advice to courses on how to reduce maintenance costs, mainly eliminating hard to maintain bunkers. So, he may have visited Oakmont back in the day! However, I’ve never seen Tillinghast associated with Oakmont.
I think the winner will be a few over par. Hard to bet against Scheffler or Rory.So who wins? What is the score?
Not really an underdog, but I like Niemann a lot too.Front runner. So who is your under dog.
So you are saying I should take the under at 278.5 strokes?Scheffler at -2
The way Rory played in his last two tournaments, it will be pretty easy to bet against him.I think the winner will be a few over par. Hard to bet against Scheffler or Rory.
Out of the guys that play out of our club (Berger, Glover, Cole, Bhatia, Lowry, Young) I see only Lowry and maybe Lucas making the cut. Surprised Alex Noren isn't in the field. Also surprised Eric Cole had to get in as an alternate.
He is playing well and he is my dark horse as well. He won last week though and that is always tough. Not really an underdog, but I like Niemann a lot too.
Maybe but I wonder.....did he really even want to make the cut last week? Heard his plane landed in Pittsburgh an hour after he walked off 18 on Friday. The way Rory played in his last two tournaments, it will be pretty easy to bet against him.
Just like my high school prom dateGreens running at 16 on the stimp! No way under-par wins this week!
They will slow them for the tournament. I played Oakmont In November with one of their regular caddies and he said the greens will be slower for the tour pros vs. the members because of the pin positions for the tourney. The greens would be a nightmare at regular speeds with the tourney pin positions.Greens running at 16 on the stimp! No way under-par wins this week!
Will be interesting to see how he does this weekend. He is going back to the driver he used to win the Masters. He had been experimenting with a shorter shaft with not good results. He took time off to work with his driver from the Masters. See if he can bring the practice rounds to the course. The way Rory played in his last two tournaments, it will be pretty easy to bet against him.
I played 14 on the stimp in Naples in March. Nicklaus course with false fronts… hilarious! And I am a 5.4 handicap and a good putter. 16 at Oakmont… lmao! They will slow them for the tournament. A 5.4 can't be a "good" putterI played 14 on the stimp in Naples in March. Nicklaus course with false fronts… hilarious! And I am a 5.4 handicap and a good putter. 16 at Oakmont… lmao!
Getting old stinks… I deal with 3 herniated discs….L3-4-5…. My day starts with 2 hours of gym time, all so I can golf!A 5.4 can't be a "good" putter
I am trying to get back under 10.0 after my second hip replacement in December... all about hitting fairways and eliminating 3 putts. I just pivoted to a mini driver... we'll see
What kills me is learning to live with decreased distance... i hit a 4 hybrid where i used to hit an 8 ironGetting old stinks… I deal with 3 herniated discs….L3-4-5…. My day starts with 2 hours of gym time, all so I can golf!
