The battle is now on for post war Syria. Iran wants to reestablish the Persian Empire stretching from Iran to the sea (Iraq, Syria). If successful, Iran will then target Lebanon, Jordan, etc. Assad is Iran's puppet. Iran is Russia's puppet. Iran is getting more involved in Syria to allow Assad to regain control over the entire country with Russia's assistance. The U.S. is hoping to stop that. We may end up with a divided Syria, which appears to be the best we can do right now. Part of it controlled by Assad and part by Syrian rebels. Russia and Iran, of course, want Syria to be fully controlled by Assad.
