Trudeau Says Trump Is Willing To Change his Mind ‘Unlike Many Politicians’

CHRIS WHITE

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that, “unlike most politicians,” President Donald Trump’s lack of political ideology makes him open to changing his mind.

“I’ve learned that he listens,” Trudeau told reporters about Trump’s managing style. “He is a little bit unlike many politicians,” he added, referring to the Republican president’s unorthodox political leanings.

Trudeau suggested that most politicians are “trained” to hold a position come hell or high water, meaning they won’t budge from their positions even in the face of convincing counter arguments. This doesn’t seem to be Trump’s strategy.

“I think there’s a challenge in that for electors, but there’s also an opportunity in that for people who engage with him to try and work to achieve a beneficial outcome,” Trudeau said.
Trump and Trudeau met February in Washington to hash out disagreements and discuss new areas of opportunities for both the U.S. and Canada. They spoke about the president’s temporary immigration ban, climate change, and his signing of the Keystone XL Pipeline, a thousand-mile-long oil project that Trudeau supports.

Democrats foisted the mantle of climate warrior upon Trudeau after Trump, a climate skeptic, won the White House. Former Vice President Joe Biden said as much after the 2016 presidential election.

“Trudeau and German Chancellor Angela Merkel must fill the void left by a departing Obama administration in the fight against climate change,” Biden told a group of former prime ministers in December.

Trudeau’s new position on Trump is creating animosity among the hordes of environmentalists and liberals who sing the prime minister’s praises.

Bill McKibben, co-founder of environmentalist group 350.org, said on Monday that Trudeau is in league with the former real estate tycoon turned commander-in-chief.

“[W]hen it comes to the defining issue of our day, climate change, he’s a brother to the old orange guy in DC,” McKibben wrote. He said Trudeau was “hard at work pushing for new pipelines through Canada and the US to carry yet more oil out of Alberta’s tar sands, which is one of the greatest climate disasters on the planet.”

Casto's boy praises Trump, I might have to rethink some things.

And Trudeau is getting bashed by the left. What does that tell you? The left doesn't care about anything but opposing Trump. Trudeau and Trump could strike the greatest trade deal possible and the libs would be against it. Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).

Canadians libs are terrified that Trudeau will soften his stance on global warming (e.g. Keystone Pipeline). He is in a tough spot since fossil fuels are of great value to the Canadian economy.

Sounds like the deal maker is caving on NAFTA

Not sure how you can draw that conclusion. Negotiation is give and take. Win-win. That is how you get things done. As long as we get our high priority items taken care of, it's a win for us. Keystone, for example, a win for the U.S. and a win for Canada. Moreover, Canada is not the big challenge for NAFTA, it's Mexico and all that cheap labor.

You've obviously never read the Art of the Deal. Start with an outrageous position, back off a bit when appropriate and you'll end up with more than you ever expected.

Not sure I'd call that praise. I'll give you a translation. Trump is so clueless about most issues that once someone more familiar with the subject matter schools him and makes a persuasive argument then he's fairly likely to do a 180 turn and agree with whomever he just spoke with. Seeing that Trump has done that on various issues, Trudeau's comments seem pretty reasonable. Maybe that's a good thing but it's also pretty pathetic that our low information, so called prez lacks so much knowledge and seems often to be poorly briefed/prepared to deal with so many important issues. Who knew being prez could be so difficult? Maybe if he just watched more tv....

A good President would acknowledge when the facts change, his or her views may change. That is good.

Counter that with Obama. He was stubborn to a fault. Whether it was Syria or Iran, he wasn't going to change regardless of the facts.

Moreover, it is the Canadians that seem upset, so maybe Trump is getting the better of the deal.

You're overreacting Toronto. The article I posted is factual regarding Canadian environmentalists being really, really upset with Trudeau over energy. I also posted this:

"Canadians libs are terrified that Trudeau will soften his stance on global warming (e.g. Keystone Pipeline). He is in a tough spot since fossil fuels are of great value to the Canadian economy." Anyone with half a brain would know I was speaking about environmental libs. I also wrote this:

"Not sure how you can draw that conclusion. Negotiation is give and take. Win-win. That is how you get things done. As long as we get our high priority items taken care of, it's a win for us. Keystone, for example, a win for the U.S. and a win for Canada. Moreover, Canada is not the big challenge for NAFTA, it's Mexico and all that cheap labor." The article I posted links to an environmental magazine which contained an article with this quote:

Environmental extremist Bill McKibben says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a massive disappointment, environmental hypocrite and “a brother to the old orange guy in DC [Donald Trump].”

Writing in EcoWatch this week, McKibben can barely contain his contempt for the Canadian leader who is seen as not only the polar opposite of President Donald Trump but a hero for American liberals who wish they had a self-proclaimed “feminist” leading them.

But those words are meaningless if you keep digging up more carbon and selling it to people to burn, and that's exactly what Trudeau is doing. He's hard at work pushing for new pipelines through Canada and the U.S. to carry yet more oil out of Alberta's tar sands, which is one of the greatest climate disasters on the planet.

You may not be upset about this, but clearly many environmentalists are. I have no idea how large a group environmentalists make up in Canada and how many are upset about Keystone and other pipelines, but it is that group to which I was referring. And I suspect it is more than just 15% that belong to the party to which you referred. In fact, you had a huge caveat. 15% outside of BC. How big is it in BC? I suspect it's quite large in comparison. And how many are upset with Trudeau over this that don't belong to the NDP party?

A good President would acknowledge when the facts change, his or her views may change. That is good. More leaders should be like this instead of blind unwavering from outdated ideas that their parties have been extolling for decades.

Counter that with Obama. He was stubborn to a fault. Whether it was Syria or Iran, he wasn't going to change regardless of the facts. Most political leaders are like this. They should check in with the people once in a while. Blind allegiance to an R or D has its' limits as we found out recently.

Moreover, it is the Canadians that seem upset, so maybe Trump is getting the better of the deal.

As for Trudeau, his homage to the late Fidel Castro will be hard to get past for moi.

Bit late back to the table on this but....the 'environmental lib' you refer to up here is 9 times of 10 NDP. Federally they have never formed a government since the 3 party system for lack of a better term , came into existence decades ago. Occasionally they muster up some sort of rag tag government in a few provinces, and usually govern BC. Federally in elections they manage a measly 15-20% since forever...I will say some do vote Liberal rarely and only in the hopes of ousting a Conservative gov't...and I am fairly certain they are the ones driving this narrative. I dont believe I am overreacting, and yes I am in favor of Keystone as it helps get a resourse to market. Trudeau is walking a bit of a tightrope for certain right now....Canadian Libs often try to pander to all to stay in power...usually dropping debtload and running a surplus when in power over the last 30 years, which IMO is fairly impressive. The current fella is running some pretty heavy defecit numbers which will certainly rile up Con's. He will sink in one term if he doesnt create some black ink by year 4...
