A University of Kentucky employee has been fired after they broke into 860 residence hall suites and stole items left behind by students over the winter break, the university said Wednesday. The employee has been criminally charged with burglary, trespassing and possession of a deadly weapon (brass knuckles), and was arraigned in Fayette County Court on Tuesday. An investigation by the UK Police Department is ongoing. UK said the break-ins affected about 1,650 students. The employee accessed the dorms using a swipe card, saying they were performing routine maintenance, UK said in a statement. “First and foremost, we are here to support our students, their safety and their security,” said UKPD Chief Joe Monroe. “The technology now in place in new, high-tech residence halls allowed us to detect unwarranted activity much more quickly than we would have been able to do in older halls that depended upon locks and keys for entry and access.”

That statement seems contradictory....Sounds like UK swiftly got involved with the new technology after ONLY 860 dorm rooms being robbed!

Seems I'd want my own key after this report?!

It was probably a matter of a high number of dorms being accessed by someone that shouldn't have that tipped them off to check further.

To control access, you would have to install your own lock. I doubt UK is going to allow that.

I don't know about the kids today but back when I was in school if you would have stolen from me, you wouldn't have got much.

Things I left behind on Christmas break:

Condiments
Books
A lot of ramen and canned ravioli.

I took my 19 inch TV and unnamed video game console to avoid sounding old home with me.

Not much of a score.

“The technology that allowed someone to quickly and easily be able to break into 860 rooms without detection from a human being is also the same technology that allowed us to catch him!”

Could you imagine someone trying to pick the lock of 860 rooms without someone noticing??

What they did is really easy. If you're the PM then you most likely have admin privilege's to whatever software runs the access control system. If they have hard keys, same thing - the PM has access to the key track system. They probably just made themselves a master key. It was somewhat clever to disguise the scheme as routine maintenance but they have to legally notify residents if they are going to enter units for maintenance. The smart crook PM's use 3rd party vendors that residents don't recognize if they're going to pull this stunt.

Also, that developer is one of the wealthiest in the world and also one of the cheapest on their security. But, they just made my job that much easier so can't hate on them too much.
