This is what you get when your AD panics and does something like that - poor Pope is just in over his head. Nice guy but he doesn't know how to recruit UK-caliber players. UK deserves better.
Barnhart spent most of his time on the women’s basketball coaching search and Scott Drew. When Drew’s family spurred what he arrogantly assumed was a sure thing, he went for the first guy to jump at the job, and he’s super Christian to boot!

If anyone believes Mitch asked dozens of coaches and got turned down by every single one of them, you’re as delusional as Barney is. It’s the same crap as 2007 when everyone thought no one would come and we ended up with BCG and then 2 years later Calipari jumped at the offer. Hurley was never realistic, but you’re telling me every major coach turned Kentucky down? “It’s the NIL era, everything is different” Yeah and Lane Kiffin left a playoff team to CRAWL to the sh*tshow that is LSU. Top 5 coaching jobs will always have good to great coaches who want to win what they assume are easy titles.

And many here defended his résumé. I was glad to be rid of Cal, but I have never been a fan of this particular hire.

I think Pope walks or gets fired after his 3rd year.

This is the year he was supposed to show improvement. Purdue game was clearly Fools Gold.

We have not gotten better and that is concerning.
This isn’t towards you but anybody that put stock into beating a team preseason scrimmage when there’s nothing on the line are crazy. That was a practice. Nobody went 100%.

Now that his son his the Auburn job, he could break his neck to come to UK.
Wouldn’t that be great tho. Let’s just stop. I’m getting even more depressed thinking what this season might turn into.

I’m trying hard to have realistic takes. I’m so mad at the current state of the team. I don’t want to be negative 24/7 like I’ve been. But what’s there to be positive about. The problems are real so we can’t ignore them. I need help on how to be a fan rn lol
Agree 100%. If Pope could sign any elite recruit, any recruit not from Kentucky, that would help. His missing on everybody is the biggest red flag. There have been a lot of mediocre coaches who sign elite talent. Why can’t Pope?

And most people on this board applauded the hire and attacked those who were against it. Many fans simply failed to understand and maybe still do that wanting Cal gone and not wanting Pope here are not mutually exclusive.

Few wanted CCC gone more than I did. I was calling for his ouster years ago.. but I was also vehemently opposed to Mark Pope being the next coach.

We are really screwed now.

And hilariously he’s not even “super Christian.” Because Mormons are in no way Christian. They’re desperate to be considered as such, but just a small glimpse into this cult reveals how far away from Christianity the LDS are.

MB hired the Joker Philips equivalent to be the head basketball coach of the most prestigious program in college basketball history. You don't hire the nice guy. You take your time and hire the right guy.

That was billy g. There is a litany of poor mitch moves.

Regardless of how this turns out, Pope didn't have the resume for this job not even close. I said it then.

I hope it ends up working out.

Im still under the impression that even if Mitch didnt reach out to coaches.. we just werent getting much traction with anyone. Same story after Tubby, and pretty much the same story after BCG if it wasnt for Cal being in trouble at Memphis.

Idk if its Mitch as a whole (seems to be part of it) or if coaches dont really care to coach basketball here.. but its been a problem since Pitino left. People dont seen to be lining up to come here, coaches or players. Have to take a look in the mirror and figure out why

From a lifelong Bengals fan: find something to do for the rest of the season. For several years, I’ve only watched UK when they played reasonable competition. With this guy‘s inability to beat teams with a pulse, I’m just gonna skip out on the rest of the season.
Mitch didn't panic he was only looking for coaches with a strong religious background.
And honestly, with regard to his particular religious background - it’s hard to take seriously people who believe that the Living God in heaven came and had physical intercourse with Mary to produce Jesus.

all religions sound kooky as hell if you look at it logically. I mean you really think thats crazier than getting a virgin pregnant through magic?

If we were just going to hire a dude because he played UK, I would’ve much rather rolled the dice on Rajon Rondo.
