This is what you get when your AD panics and does something like that - poor Pope is just in over his head. Nice guy but he doesn't know how to recruit UK-caliber players. UK deserves better.
Its worse than that-
-He never won a regular season conference title
-He never won a conference tournament championship
-His record was worse than the coach that preceded him
-He had zero record of being able to recruit elite college basketball players
He was making something around $1-2MM per year at BYU. Mitch bumped him up to $5MM. And, he gets an auto 1 year extension for making the Sweet 16 lol.

People are blaming Mitch, but Pope is getting paid and knew what he was getting into. Now- If he didn't get a sweetheart contract....then yeah, I would feel bad for him also. He belongs back at Utah State.

all religions sound kooky as hell if you look at it logically. I mean you really think thats crazier than getting a virgin pregnant through magic?
Yes.

the supreme divine being who created all things (who isn’t flesh but spirit) having physical intercourse with a 13 year-old girl seems more weird.

Their holy book also says dark skin is a curse and it wasn’t until the 1980s that some prophet said that was wrong and blacks could be Mormons. It’s diabolical.

I do agree that the major world religions all have stories that defy belief, but Mormons are twisted bro.

What about developing a team with what you got? playing to your strengths instead of weaknesses?

theres still time to do well, but i've already said it, we may be toward the middle of the rankings in the sec end of season...

Coach Pope is frustrated with the results but i think if the team listens to him, we may get better.

Im still under the impression that even if Mitch didnt reach out to coaches.. we just werent getting much traction with anyone. Same story after Tubby, and pretty much the same story after BCG if it wasnt for Cal being in trouble at Memphis.

Idk if its Mitch as a whole (seems to be part of it) or if coaches dont really care to coach basketball here.. but its been a problem since Pitino left. People dont seen to be lining up to come here, coaches or players. Have to take a look in the mirror and figure out why

Pearl would've walked here but was never asked.

From a lifelong Bengals fan: find something to do for the rest of the season. For several years, I’ve only watched UK when they played reasonable competition. With this guy‘s inability to beat teams with a pulse, I’m just gonna skip out on the rest of the season.

And honestly, with regard to his particular religious background - it’s hard to take seriously people who believe that the Living God in heaven came and had physical intercourse with Mary to produce Jesus.
Equally hard to listen to people who think that the Bible says that God had physical intercourse with Mary.

UNC and Duke both hired a coach with ZERO coaching wins.
We just hired a football coach with zero wins.

Isn't he trying or is in politics now? I actually like Pearl a lot.. but if someone is looking at a new career, and is already 65 years old.. idk. I think we'd be getting 5 years out of him if wete lucky and I think if your UK, you have to go a little more youthful. Same with some people mentioning Barnes

A roster problem, a subbing pattern problem, an in game adjustment problem, a recruiting problem, a relating to stud players problem and on it goes.
I had really high hopes after some games last season and the way he talked to the team about Flagg during the end of the Duke game. I guess that was so easy to see it just sounded good because I haven’t seen any in game stuff in the last 2 months of last year until now that shows me this staff is any good.

You don’t think an all powerful god who created everything could make that happen? It’s not magic, you are looking at it from a human perspective. Regardless of what you or anyone believes his religion or beliefs have nothing to do with basketball or the job he’s doing.

Pope and the staff just seem different. No juice. Pope just seems lost on the court and off.

Like I said in another thread, nobody worth a piss wanted to come here.
Barney only asked 2 coaches. And those guys were already long shots at leaving their current location.

I would have written a blank check to Donovan and made him say no.

Then i would have hired Pearl. He has been begging for the UK job for about a decade now.

Mine too. He would have given 5 years of unmatched passion and effort. This job needs that ego and passion. Not a guy like Pope.
Pearl is absolutely tailor made for the UK job. He was my #2 pick behind Donovan.

Nobody else comes close, with the exception of 1990's Pitino and Swaggy Cal.

Idk hes going into politics but he certainly is vocal, which isnt good no matter which side hes for.

I agree only 5 isnt optimal but he'd give you 5 good ones. There really wasn't much to choose from that cycle after drew stayed, but Pearl was the layup.

Well, we are Kentucky, we are BBN! .. we get our top pick, so I'm not too worried about it. We've never had to settle for scraps before. /sarcasm lol

We need to pray that Mitch is gone soon and we get a replacement that's much more forward thinking.. of basketball as a business and doing what's needed to be done to win games.. not make the blue hairs happy, not be able to say we did it "the Kentucky way".. to win. Thats it.

We do when Mitch is in charge. Look at the recent football hire, Mitch wasn’t involved like he was with previous searches and it was quick and efficient with Kentucky getting the guy most of us wanted after Sumrall ended up at Florida.

In all likelihood, if Mitch isn’t involved with the next coaching search it’ll be over within a day or two with feelers being put out beforehand to get a grasp on who wants to coach here.

Any ideas of how that went down? How could the AD be circumvented like this? It's just wild to me that Mitch would not really be included in this, and also still have a job the next day. He has to be nearing the exit. He can't possibly last what looks like a 15-loss basketball season..

I could be wrong, but I believe the Champions Blue board was responsible for the coaching search or at least that’s what everyone is saying.

Mitch is technically on the board, but wasn’t as involved as he was with previous searches.

It’s likely they’ll be the ones doing the coaching search if Pope ends up leaving this year. If it’s next year, probably the new AD. But we don’t know want to have to do a coaching search next year if the Kansas and UNC jobs open up, which is a big possibility since Self will be on thin ice if his big recruiting class fails and Davis doesn’t turn things around. We’ll be competing for coaches with two other blue bloods. That has disaster written all over it.

Hopefully the people who just made the football hire get to push Mitch out before be makes any more decisions. We finally had a process that worked like it should and will reorganize the business side.

Basketball desperately needs the same no matter what happens this year. No way we should've paid 22 mil for this bunch. An actual gm would've either cut that cost drastically.

Agreed, and starting to think some of these players absolutely fleeced us. Which can't really blame them when Pope had to go to his 7th and 8th options and just hand them a **** ton of money that was meant for players of much higher caliber.

Glad Kentucky Atheltics is starting to wake up.

Barnhart spent most of his time on the women’s basketball coaching search and Scott Drew. When Drew’s family spurred what he arrogantly assumed was a sure thing, he went for the first guy to jump at the job, and he’s super Christian to boot!

If anyone believes Mitch asked dozens of coaches and got turned down by every single one of them, you’re as delusional as Barney is. It’s the same crap as 2007 when everyone thought no one would come and we ended up with BCG and then 2 years later Calipari jumped at the offer. Hurley was never realistic, but you’re telling me every major coach turned Kentucky down? “It’s the NIL era, everything is different” Yeah and Lane Kiffin left a playoff team to CRAWL to the sh*tshow that is LSU. Top 5 coaching jobs will always have good to great coaches who want to win what they assume are easy titles.
Drew is really killing it at Baylor isn’t he

That’s what you do when your goofy fanbase gets riled up and is controlled by a radio host and runs a coach off before you have a sure fire replacement ready.

Pearl. Pearl would have came here. He was my pick too.
Mitch would have felt the need to hire an exorcist if he was forced to bring in Pearl. He promotes himself as the squeaky clean AD who hasn’t gotten us in any major trouble in his 23 years. Dude also thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, he was so confident that we’d get in trouble when NIL first started that he tucked tail and sank the football program into an abyss that we still haven’t recovered from. Hope the rumors are true and he retires this coming summer.

And this is why pope has a short leash and likely not back next year. He had no resume other than playing at UK and coaching some Utah schools. That’s it. He was hired as a hunch. Fire Barney and bring a real comittee to hire Oates who has a final four

Calipari did that to himself, again a dumb contract and he didn’t even speak with Cal. He doesn’t do his job, the only thing he does is make the school money and his friends money. He fails in his actual duties of producing good coaches and teams.

One of yall twitter people… get Pearl to UK trending. Or oats. We need those rumors to start a fire. We don’t need rumors of teammates sleeping with each others girls.

@coriolanus92

Does this above look like someone that wants to be wrong, maybe let it play out a bit? lol.....

Does another guy saying "Pope knows it's over" and "bring Oats home" (same poster) sound like someone that wants to be wrong? :ROFLMAO:

Calipari had to go. We were fortunate that he dug his own grave. Timing couldn't be helped.
He had to go because y’all are controlled by your emotions and he made Matt Jones mad. Timing is what it is and it’s dumb to run a coach just to take a gamble. Y’all are so filled with hatred that you couldn’t help it.

Man, some of you guys are just weird. It's a sports team. I went to school there. I want them to be successful. I don't hate Calipari or anyone else. I was unhappy that he was coasting. Get a grip.
