I wouldn’t be too worried about guys being overpaid in a scenario where everyone is essentially on a one year deal. This isn’t like pro contracts where you are counting on the front end of the deal being good value and the back end is likely to be crap.

Kentucky basketball is very well positioned right now. Maybe down the road a school like Texas will be outbidding everyone like the Steinbrenner Yankees, but that isn’t happening now. For now we are one of only a few Yankees. It’s a good place to be.

Arkansas is trying to do that right now.

That itself won’t happen but that’s an intriguing idea about multi-year contracts. If a top 20-30 kid looks like a 2-year player for example, could they offer him like 1.2 million over 2 years and he’d have to pay back the 1st 600k if he enters the draft or transfers after 1?

The only difference between now and then is it is legal now and it wasn't back in the day. Because it is now legal, the players are able to get advice to ensure that they are getting true market value. This upsets some coaches because there is less money for them.

Trying to do something like that would be a bad look for the school imo, especially if you are wanting them to pay back money that they already earned. You also wouldn't want to make a player feel like they are being forced to stay over a contractual stipulation. A second year could backfire in a major way if the player isn't good enough or if he is a team cancer over a contract disagreement.

Maybe not, but up front it is a good deal for them and they lose nothing if they turn pro after a year. Just structure the payment in 2 year increments. He won’t get paid for year 2 unless he stays and owes nothing if he leaves. Fringe guys get guaranteed money if they wanna develop.

If any kid gets a Million dollars to play for any school they should sign a contract for 4 years and the money be put in a trust fund and if they leave before the 4 years are up they only get part of the money. I know that will never happen but changes have to be made .

It should at least be an option. Kids would be smart, especially the ones with a limited pro career to have some of that money to fall back on after graduation. It would be a nice chunk to start their life with rather than blowing it on an expensive car and stuff while in college.

I'm sure Tyson food oligarchs would like to give the impression they are donating for their love of Arkansas sports, but I'd consider them closer to Saudi Arabia throwing a cool billion at Ronaldo. Their ROI isn't monetary. Basically, they are winning the good graces of the community and associating Tyson chicken with something like basketball instead of their factory farms that slaughter animals in generally horrific conditions.

I think some schools are doing it this way already. Maybe I’m wrong but I seem to remember maybe the Florida football player got pissed because one of his payments didn’t go through. Which makes it sound like they are doing payments instead of a lump sum.

Structure the contract so that they only get paid for the games they play in, and then by the minutes for each game. Superstar players should be playing in more games, and more minutes per game. They want to be paid like pro's, then they can be treated like pro's. The Shaedon Sharpe fiasco must NEVER, EVER happen again. I'm on a work meeting as we speak, with like 6 PMs babbling about something and providing no actual substance or value.

When I think about sports players making a ton of money, I'm at least GETTING something for it. My teams are better, I get to see them win, etc. And I often think about just how many other jobs are out there were people are making anywhere from $100k to $10m a year to do next to nothing. So it's hard for me to care that an 18-year old basketball player just made a few million.

Kinda strange but you are entitled to feeling that way.

I just never cared for the "omg look how much they make to play a game!" takes. I don't know why this bothers so many people.

Now I certainly don't think Dybantsa or whatever is worth 7 to 8mil. I don't think any freshman is worth that. But 1 mil for a top25 player, to come to a program we all think is above everyone else? And that we should always be competing for a title? Where's the problem?
