One of the few things that UNC does right is the way they have a system set up for very specific criteria for a player to get their name in the rafters. I don't necessarily agree with all of their criteria, but then it's not a voting contest. If I were in charge, I would make the following criteria (have to meet 1) that you automatically get your jersey in the rafters at Rupp:

NPOY - any of the recognized NPOY awards
Consensus first team All-American
Consensus SEC POY

If that were the standards, the following guys would have their jersey up:

Ralph Beard
Bob Brannum
Willie Cauley-Stein
Johnny Cox
Anthony Davis
Tony Delk
Leroy Edwards
Jack Givens
Kevin Grevey
Alex Groza
Cliff Hagan
Dan Issel
Kyle Macy
Jamal Mashburn
Ron Mercer
Cotton Nash
Tom Parker
Tayshaun Prince
Pat Riley
Forest Sale
Bill Spivey
Oscar Tshiebwe
Tyler Ulis
Kenny Walker
John Wall

I would also have 1 guy from each decade, as voted on by the players from that decade, have their jersey placed in the rafters that do not meet automatic criteria. These would be guys who either had really good careers or NCAA tournaments. It would look something like:

2010's - Malik Monk (this was the toughest of the group)
2000's - Keith Bogans
1990's - Jeff Sheppard
1980's - Melvin Turpin
1970's - Rick Robey
1960's - Louie Dampier
1950's - Frank Ramsey
1940's - Wah Wah Jones
1930's - John DeMoisey
1920's - Basil Hayden
At least 15 of these are already in.

Oscar was NPoY. It’s not his fault our coach at the time lost his mind, had a foot out the door, and was likely more or less throwing games at that point by choosing the wants of individuals over the good of the program.

Someone else pointed it out but dude averaged 20/20 nearly in 3 tourney games. Lots of coaches would have built a title contender around a generational rebounder.

Oscar should be up there. Along with Davis, Prince and Bogans.

I don’t agree on SGA though. I’m greatly enjoying what he’s doing in the league.

Ulis should probably go up there eventually too. Ulis went 4 for 4 in sec championships in 2 years. went to a final four. won the cousy award. consensus 1st team AA. sec poy. sec dpoy. Arguably the best point guard we’ve ever had.

I’m among those who continue to believe it takes more than one season in a UK uniform to be eligible for the hall of fame/jersey in the rafters. To be a legacy you must first build a legacy.

Not if you had the year that Anthony Davis had in his Freshman season. His Freshman year he was awarded the Naismith, AP POY, Final-Four MVP and won a National Championship. This is just a few of his accolades but he was actually awarded and acknowledge by many more publications and people in the basketball World. The University must recognized AD as a UK great. There is no debate. I don't care if he was an 8th grader. If you ball like that give him his flowers and let his jersey and name hang in the Rafters.

To many, 567 career points while wearing a Kentucky jersey doesn’t qualify as a UK great. Did Anthony Davis have the potential to become an all-time UK great? Absolutely.

Reasonable minds can differ.

Actually, no, AD accomplished more in 1 season than some of the guys this board worships did n 4 seasons (Bogans, Prince, etc). They didn't win a thing that matters at UK (final four/s and national title/s).

I'm all for letting them n but you can't let them in and say AD isn't worthy. Then the whole UK fan mantra of "its about final fours and titles" is exposed as complete BS.

I couldn't agree more. A one and one player should not be in the rafters.

That’s an argument between you and those ‘some guys.’ But I disagree with your assertion that the only thing which matters at UK in determining hall of fame/the rafters is nattys and Final Fours - those are largely the culmination of teamwork, coaching and team effort.

If they update the standards, they need to include "Never transferred away from UK".
