-Louisville did not make a mistake joining the ACC. If they had declined, then they would become a wasteland for college sports (see what is / will happen to schools like UC and UCONN).
-HOWEVER, the ACC is going to be a rude awakening for them in many ways. They have fashioned themselves as an all-sports national power. That was built on a false foundation of wins over weak sisters, and now they will realize that UL is not a top 10 program in any sport.
-I see UL becoming more and more of a football school over time. Their basketball is simply not going to compete well against the likes of UK, UNC, and Duke. Throw in rising programs at UVA, NCSU, Notre Dame, et al and they will struggle to finish in the top 3 of that conference most years. Football, on the other hand, should be a much shorter putt. They have a lesser program than that of Clemson and FSU, but all they need to do is catch lightning in a bottle one year and catch FSU in a down year and they can go to the BCS.
The unfortunate part of this is that football is now much more important than basketball. It just is. So, it would be nice if programs like Ga Tech and NCSU and others in the ACC could elevate their football programs.
