Unassailable sports records

2,632 consecutive games - Ripken

511 Wins - Cy Young

1406 Stolen Bases - Rickie Henderson

762 Home Runs - Barry Bonds

I can't go with wins by a Pitcher in a season because they are crazy and all pre-1900.

Baseball has changed so much you won't see 300 game winners anymore and very few 500 HR guys.

The first two will never be broken. It’s just impossible in this age of mega contracts for teams to allow a big investment to play through the inevitable injuries that would come from playing in every game for over 16 years. And you have the rampant rumors that the Orioles resorted to trickery to keep Cal’s streak alive (see the Kevin Costner story).

The all time wins are right there too. Guys can’t get to 20 per season anymore, let alone doing that for 26 straight years!

I can see Bonds’ record falling in the future with all the emphasis on driving the ball and physical conditioning. There would need to be a lot of good injury luck for a player, but having the DH in both leagues helps with longevity at the plate.

Just about all of the current baseball records have very little chance of ever been broken. As a matter of fact, I would say you could cut about all of them in half outside of maybe home runs and those won’t even be broken.

The most 300 score games in Professional Bowling belongs to Parker Bohn III with 114 perfect games in his career. Why this is amazing is that the record for most perfect games in a season was 8 and that was set by Bohn in 1999. So on that average, it would take 15 straight years of having 8 perfect games each of those years to even break the record.

The combined home run record for brothers in Major League Baseball is held by Hank and Tommie Aaron, who hit a total of 768 home runs. Hank Aaron hit 755, and Tommie Aaron hit 13.

Chief Wilson's 36 triples in 1912/Sam Crawford's 309 (or 312) career triples

When I think of unbreakable records, it's definitely many of those old baseball records that are untouchable. Triples will never happen with the same frequency with today's stadium configurations. Anything involving durability with a pitcher is untouchable. Though it's unlikely to occur, I could see someone hitting in 56 straight games, someone scoring 100 points in an NBA game, a coach winning 409 games. But no one is touching Cy Young's 749 complete games or Bob Feller's 36 complete games in a season unless something completely changes with the way that baseball is played. The last two seasons, the MLB leader had 2.

Dimaggio's 56-game hit streak
Tiger's 144 straight cuts made (though, the no-cut events he participated in counted toward this)
Wilt's 100 points
Wilt?? Maybe. But that's due to the three point shot existing in today's game.

To all those saying those records will never be broken, in my lifetime and I'm sure those on this board recall hearing for many, many years, that Lou Gehrig's 2,131 consecutive game streak was unassailable as well as Ty Cobb's 4,191 hits. Just sayin.

Right now, Dabo Swinney is ahead of the pace Joe set to get to 409 in terms of both age and years coaching and he has more games per year as well to assist him.

I wonder if anyone can get Hack Wilson's 191 RBI's in a season. Man Ram and Sosa got to 165 and 160 respectively and were still miles away.

Again, I'd put it in the "really difficult to break" category...but the odds are much higher of someone catching lightning in a bottle and doing it than a pitcher throwing 749 complete games.

Well I guess PSU is just going to need to start scheduling Clemson each year and beat there azzes!

Two things that I want to say in response to this post.

1) If Dabo averages 11 wins a season (possible, but not likely even in the weak down ACC), he would have to coach for another 21 years to break Joe's record. That would mean he has to coach until he is 76. That is possible, I will admit, but highly unlikely.

2) As a Yankee fan, I was not very happy when Ripken was in the process of breaking Lou Gehrig's record. What really bothered me back in the 90's was when the Orioles stated they would forfeit games if there was a strike just so Ripken could maintain his streak. Thankfully it didn't come to that.

The worst thing that could happen to Dabo and his pursuit of the record would be the ACC breaking up and Clemson joining the SEC or the Big Ten, both of which have been rumored. He doesn't come close to the record if he joins either of those conferences.
