CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Freshman pitchers Sean Hurley and Amos Rich have graduated high school a semester early and enrolled at UNC, sources confirmed on Thursday.
Amos Rich (RHP) is from Waynesville, N.C. and went to Tuscola High School. He most recently played with the Dirtbags Nationals so my fantastic Dirtbags source gave me a nice scouting report:
Amos was a strike throwing machine on the summer circuit against some of the best high school competition. His fastball velocity is 90-92 but it has late life and plays like it’s 93-95 with crazy IVB. A big problem we see with freshmen is controlling everything and poise on the mound, obviously he hasn't played in college but thus far with Dirtbags and the Mountaineers he's shown poise on the mound. I know less about his off speed, he has a slider but all of his breakers may need to take another jump to be college ready.
Sean Hurley (RHP) is from Cohoes, New York and stands at 6-foot-5. He went to Shaker High School and played on the circuit with Allstars Academy Prestige. During his first spring on Shaker's varsity team he only played the field but turned to pitching on the summer circuit including at a UNC camp which caught Forbes' and Co. eyes. He missed the 2023-24 season with the Bison due to a back injury. I know less about his arsenal but he has major upside.
Grace's Thoughts: Hurley, I think, may redshirt or just keep working with the coaching staff whereas I think Amos Rich, despite just enrolling, has more of a chance to see the mound and even pitch some meaningful innings this season.
