Ridpath. Scathing. As it should be....
I believe, and think anyone off the street who is not a North Carolina fan or apologist knows, that this was a long standing scheme that would not have occurred as long or to the level it did but for the benefit to certain athletes.
Thumbing their noses at the NCAA and its authority is a nice way to put it. Some reporters called it a straight up middle finger.
University of North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a most disingenuous way...Wow! Cunningham conveniently forgets the NCAA has gotten its hand in academics, classes, and other curricular issues that by his statements they should not be doing.
UNC could still face some penalties and the NCAA could push back against this pack sand response and actually punish a program that deserves it. Yes they do deserve it in my view and the reasons are clear. By NCAA rules, this was extra benefits and academic fraud by any analysis
Unfortunately in my view I think UNC will essentially be off the hook when this mercifully ends...
While this is a travesty to me, there can be a silver lining...
