I've found some good prices at Overstock.com.

I agree with Rex. I wouldn't make fun of anyone that had a good'ole Timex. I too got a family heirloom watch.....actually a pocket watch. The old wind-up kind complete with chain. My grandfather brought it back with him from Germany during WW2. I don't think it's worth a lot monetarily but the story behind it is priceless to me.

I've had many watches through the yrs. Fossil, Timex, Citizen, Victorinox. I wouldn't recommend the Fossil's if you're active. They look good and get the job done the majority of the time but taking them hiking, canoeing, fishing....they break. Timex are great. Durable, cheaper. Victorinox's are tanks and are awesome. I have 3 Citizen Eco-drives. Ranging from 3-10 yrs old. Can't kill'em, look great, never needed a battery or band.

Back in the day, Bulova was considered to be a good watch brand. During college breaks Thanksgiving and Christmas, my grandfather put me to work in the tobacco warehouse he ran. In those days, there'd be a crew of about 30-40 men working in the warehouse. I remember in '77, a guy came walking toward us carrying a briefcase. When he spoke, he sounded like he was from India or somewhere. He opened his case and showed us all sorts of watches with prices ranging from $7-8 up to around $15. These poor old workers, who by the way had just been paid, started looking at these watches. The sales man spoke very rapidly, saying"Bolivia watches,,,great watch"...making it sound like he was selling Bulova watches. The guys started buying and proudly wearing these "famous brand " watches. I decided to take a look. Sure enough, right on the face "Bolivia" . Some were pretty nice looking. Wonder if any are still running.

You're crying like a b!tch in the cut the cord thread about someone paying $200/month on cable yet you'd spend $200 on a "watch" so you don't have to occasionally take your phone out of your pocket to check the time? How often do you really need to check the time so as much as it is a hassle to grab your phone?
$200 once vs. $200 every month. Are you really that dense?

I'm in your same boat. My father-in-law spent $20K on Rolexes for he and my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law has since passed away and my daughter now has that one. I wouldn't give you more than $100 for any watch. Just don't see paying orders of magnitude more than necessary for something. There are many expensive items I like and I don't mind paying extra if I feel like I'm getting something for my money. What does a Rolex do better than a Timex?
They aren't any more attractive than dozens of other dress watches that cost a fraction...they don't keep time any better...
Here is my philosophy on most things.

I want it to be decent looking and good quality so it will last. But not to be so expensive that I would croak if I broke or lost it. And i couldn't give two ***** about owning status symbols.

This is how I feel about things from sunglasses to cars.

Poo pooing using your phone a few times during the day to check the time vs. buying a $200 watch for laziness; while criticizing someone else for "wasting" money - are you that dense?

I check the time dozens of instances throughout the day. Some of us have demanding schedules. When you're on the dole and your only appointment is when to drink your next diet dr pepper and when judge judy comes o , your government phone will prolly suffice.

Again, aren't you an underpaid architect? What demands do you have that most of us working business ppl do not have? And have you heard of smart phones? It's what most of us business men use. They have really neat appointment and date reminders.

It is a novel thing. You can even set alarms to rings minutes or hours prior to your appointments. You will never have to constantly check your timex again.

No need to thank me. I'm just happy to help.

^Where we work we're not allowed to carry our phones around with us. It's deemed unprofessional. But I'm fairly certain that our patients love the fact that we use watches. I can see both sides of the coin here. If you use a watch, great. If you use a phone, great. Both, great.

So I have to reach in pants everytime I need to know what time it is?
You don't really need a watch anymore man, use your cell phone. That's $200 bucks you could be putting towards a month of beer.

I'm retired. All I need to know time wise is whether it is day or night, summer or winter or what phase the moon is in. I can know this by looking out the window. Yuck yuck.

I have a Rolex and I love it. It's obviously man jewelry, but it's also indestructible and I can wear it anywhere. It will be given to my son when I die and it looks better than 99% of the watches I see others wearing.

We all have things we spend stupid amounts of money on. I will never understand why people get si riled up about one frivolous expense over another.

That's funny, because most of the rolex's I've seen look hideous. I would much rather have an Omega if I was going to spend stupid amounts of money on a watch.

That's fine, but you an get your money back on a Rolex. You can't sell a used Omega or anything else for that matter. The brand name matters in this case.

a true passion for horology is no different than a passion for cars, bbq, or guns. and it shouldnt be something that has to be explained or justified to others. i think getting all rambo-ed up, hanging out in a tree stand with a bunch of dudes all day is kind of gay....but i also dont care that thats what they do. people who appreciate expert level craftsmanship in fine timepieces get it. if not...they dont see the need for anything other that a $25 time piece.

rolex is a quintessential luxury watch. there is nothing wrong with a yatch-master or daytona. their biggest problem is also their biggest strength. failure to do something different. the submariner is iconic, but has been the same watch forever and everyone pretty much buys it since its a lower end watch. omega...the speedmaster is a great piece with an interesting history. its a watch worth having in a collection. but i would argue if this was the price point you are playing with you can find something a bit more interesting and unique.

but to answer the original question about a sub $200 watch. i would ask..what is the watch used for? its false to believe there is a "1 watch for all occasions". there are sport watches, dress watches, etc. but luminox offers some novelties that might interest you. carbon casing. but at the end of the day i would say...buy what you want, spend what you want. its your wrist.

When I buy a watch it cannot have glow in the dark hands or background. If it's dark, I need to find some light in order to see what time it is. Or, I'll shine my cellphone light with the time in the background on it.

Keep an eye on sales for Orient automatics. They offered 50% off last year for Father's Day.

http://orientwatchusa.com/collections/mens-watches/executive

This one is out of stock and a hair above your budget, but something like this:

is a great buy at $260. Automatic movement and it's pretty versatile (i.e. you can go casual or business with it).
I think I am going to go with the orient. But i am finding the black or blue dial go for less than white.

I'm liking this look:

Thoughts?

Agree. Love mine and its worth more now than when I got it. Nothing wrong with rewarding yourself every now and then for busting your ***.

Can't speak to that exact model crazy, but of my 20 or so sub $500 watches, the Orient delivers. Maybe Double Tay has more knowledge of watches in that price range, but in my experience Orient is the best bang for your buck. I have the one below and it is my second favorite at the price point (behind my eone, which is more of a conversation piece).

Well, I was just getting ready to make a smart a$$ comment about watches, because I use my cell phone too. But, that is a great looking watch. Love the day of the week feature. I probably won't buy one for myself, but if it comes in a ladies version, I'll buy one for my wife. Thanks for the pic!!!
