The playcaller that won the National Title.
All others have attempted to reach that pinnacle and missed. That's what OU plays for. National Titles.

Mangino, Long, and Wilson... Long and Wilson can be flipped around possibly, but Mangino called the plays that won it all. The others at least got us there.
Mangino's 2000 offense gets my vote. That offense used its running backs, wide receivers and tight end very effectively and featured a quarterback in Josh Heupel that could ad lib better than any QB that OU has had since. Heupel was not a great passer or runner....all he knew how to do was win games.
I love your expectations, however I respectfully disagree with you if you think OU is supposed to win it all every single year. Be in the mix yes.
I gotta go with Wilson. The offenses he ran were the best offenses of the Stoops era. He may not have won a national title, but national titles are won by the compete team, not just the offense. That's why I can't put Mangino on top. Sure he was the OC when Bob won a natty, but that title was more on the shoulders of the defense, rather than the offense.
Good point. One definitely can't blame Wilson for what Harvin did to OUr defense or the decisions made inside the 10 that resulted in no points.

But plays are called to score and to prevent scoring. At the end of the game, he who calls the plays that are most effective in this task wins. He who wins the most, whens the National Title. So when asked about who I think was the best play caller, it would have to be the guys who called the best plays to win the most games and win the National Title.
Defense always wins championships, sometimes fans just get caught up in scoring. However look no further than the last two championships 85/86 defense was probably the best in OU history. 99/2000 the offense scored 13 points and won it all. This won't cost any of you a dime, for the lesson.
I'm not saying Wilson was perfect. No coach, or human being for that matter, is perfect. I'm sure Wilson looks back on his coaching career and thinks of things he could have done better. But instead of judging Wilson, or any coach, on a handful of plays in their careers, or on what happens in a single game, is unfair to what they have done overall. And overall, Wilson was an incredible OC while at OU.

Colts 29 Bears 17 in Super Bowl XLI. Both teams were tied for 2nd in PPG, the Bears were 3rd in points allowed, Colts were 23rd. Bears defense was 2nd in YPP while the Colts were 29th.
Alabama had the best defense of the 4 teams in the CFP last year and lost in the semi-final to the 5th ranked offense in PPG.
Ohio State had the top scoring defense in 2007 and the 2nd scoring defense in 2006 while losing in both of those NC games.
There are plenty of other examples...
