Pope didn’t do anything last night. The players had enough and just showed what they can do.

It’s actually damning on Pope that he has held these players back.

The question now is will the players continue to self motivate.

Not one person can name anything that Pope did schematically last night to affect the play.

Pope needs to just stay out of the way like Tubby did the season those players took over.

I think that was ‘03?

Last night was a good win and a much needed win. But Pope is the same coach today that he was Friday
If the coach catches all the criticism and shots when we have a bad stretch, then he should get credit and accolades when we do well. Can’t do one and not the other. Thats unfair.

Never said he was qualified. I'm just trying to give him a fair shake after Mitch hired him
I agree, he should get a fair shake, what he did last year, buys him a 3rd year, but driving the car into a ditch this year (NIT) would cause some sleepless nights for him. 22 milliin bucks, is a lot of money.

Totally agree. I think we are making the big dance, and honestly, I think we might make another S16. I am not happy about not bringing in a top 25 HS kids, but I think our returning players will all take that jump that comes with age, and with the right moves in the portal, overseas pros, G league or HS reclass, we could have a great team next season. He needs to, because all the folks like me giving him a fair shake third year are going to bail if he lays a duck egg next season

According to Torvik Kentucky will only be favored to win 3 out of their last 9 games. I would slow your roll about thinking we should finish 6-3 over the final 9 games.

If we play the sound basketball we did tonight, we might go 5-1. If we do and are sitting 20-8, 11-4, a LOT of people on this board will owe Mark Pope a BIG apology
Ifs do not win games. It takes performance so 20-8 ain't going to happen!!

with you in your comments.
I do think this board( not you) is like Dr Jekyll
and Mr Hide.
In the last couple years of Cal, lots and lots of fans were complaining about his lack of recruiting guys that can stay here multiple years. The one and dones had sort of left a bad taste in our mouths. Each year we were always on pins and needles about who would go and who would stay.
Now Pope is looking to use the portal for talent and supplement it with HS players. He wants to keep his top players from this year and add depth and skill via the portal.
There is more than one way to do the roster construction. He has said he is bringing some high caliber guys. Until that doesn't happen, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I know we have really struggled this year but I'm optimistic that we will continue to improve to win in the league. We will go 8-3 the rest of the way and end up 22-11. Not great but a lot better than some believe currently. I also think we will be a 6 seed and advance to the s16.
Next year will be a stronger year if Pope gets his guys and I think he will.

I totally believe that. What gets me sideways, is the last few years with Cal, some people would whine about being done with one and done's and why can't we ever have a team like Purdue with four or five Sr starters... Now, Pope is trying to do just that and the same people who were over one and dones are the ones wanting to fire Pope because he doesnt have a McDonald's All American on Feb 4. Cracks me up

We were tired of guys stinking it up, then leaving after 1 season, then having to rebuild the entire squad again the next year and since Cal stopped getting the best of the best, it didn't make sense.

If Pope can return Moreno, JJ, Kam, Chandler, Jelevic, Noah and 1 or 2 more, that's a heck of a start. Player retention is massive if you want to go on deep tournament runs.

BUT… .you have to have star talent too. Getting a couple big fish from the portal and at least 1 star high school talent is ideal.

What we don't want, is a whole roster full of overvalued high school kids that Klutch paid people to rank them high, or 4* kids that leave after 1 year. That does nothing but get you NBA draft bragging rights.

I get what you're trying to say, but it's wrong. Nobody is saying we should never go after high school talent and nobody said they wanted to be just like Purdue.
Cal took it too far, he was running a G league and cared more about stuffing kids into the NBA draft than building rosters with retention AND high end talent.
Nobody wants a team full of unpolished high school kids that are just here to put their 1 year in. That's what was being said.
If Pope can land a bigtime high school talent and a couple big fish from the portal and get 6 or 7 guys to return from this team, nobody is complaining. But nobody is saying no to top high school talent.

I don't agree. Fans don't lose interest. Fans are there win or lose and they support their team. They can complain and not be happy about things, but if they're a fan, they still be there pulling for their team to win.
Yes. The almighty Duke team had a bad year in 2022. 13-11. Dinner fans ditch them? No.
Pope will get players and have us back on top. Give it some more time. Next year will tell us a lot.

I’m not even sure what this means? His empty bench was year 1. All agreed he did well last year under those circumstances. This is about this year with the team he constructed, the consistent Lack of effort, the no accountability on players, the weird substitution patterns, the consistent slow starts, the same mistakes made over and over, basically the lack of common coaching. And this was with an open ended checkbook to throw money at whoever you wanted. Throw on top of that we are 0-fer in recruiting and likely looking at a bleak outlook for year 3 thus the reality of the situation. Sorry but none of the above can be refuted.
We are in the mix for several top HS guys who fit PG, PF and C. Plus he has sites set on the portal, there are likely proven guys there we can grab. Let's not throw in the towel just yet.

We were also in the mix for Stokes and one other whose name is escaping me at the moment. Both 5 star elite athletes who seemingly will be contributors in year 1. We were all but locks for both at one time but now appears we will get neither. We have been in the mix for a great deal of really good players but thus far pope hasn’t landed any of them. We can’t have a team of roll players, we need at least two - three dudes that can take over a game on any given night and play to a consistent level. Haven’t thrown in the towel yet, but it’s rare to be this close to next season without a single commitment. That in of itself is quite alarming.

I understand. Been a fan a long time.
I'm not happy either for all the reasons you laid out.
I just think Pope will deliver. He knows what he needs.
Just for grins I looked up Kelvin Sampson and Jonny Dawkins ( I was watching them vs Houston) coaching record as they are considered good coaches. It took them on average 2-3 years to get elite talent and win big. Popes winning % isn't where we want it, no question, but I'm for giving him more time.
