Let's get em started. What week 1 game do you see an upset happening? I have 2 actually.

1. GW Danville. For the first time in their history of 4a, GW isn't ranked in the top 10 but make no mistake, this will be a talented group. LCA has something to say about that. They've been hearing how they're gonna get crushed by the public schools and how they don't belong. They'll have a crack at a GW team, who should be able to compete in Region D. LCA will show up hungry, pumped and ready to shut the doubters up. LCA wins the discipline game and sends Danville back down 29 with the L.

2. Salem. Now I'm picking Salem in this game this year, but Amherst is going to be ready. I don't buy that the Spartans are going to be dealing with any issues personnel wise but if they are then they better get em straightened out before they play Amherst. Salem is stacked at every position and the Lancers have the size in the trenches to compete with the Mules. If Amherst can keep it close and score with Salem then it could be an upset.. Doubt it but it makes one hell of a nice discussion!

Others
Charlottesville. IMO Cville is a top dog but Glass has some ballas too. World be a huge win for Woody and Company.

Sorry Hoos, but Louisa. Courtland doesn't stay down long.

Lastly, Staunton River. Top 3 3a team will have to face Christmas and JF.. A win over SR would be huge for JF before they face Magna Vista and Danville.

GW over LCA
SR over JF
And not picking the Salem/Amherst game. Didn't last year and Amherst upset the Spartans

DSH just texted me that Louisa is up big time on JF tonight. I don't know if this tells me as much about Louisa as it tells me about another weak JF defense. It appears that Louisa's QB Bell is slimed down a little and is even better than last year.

I just don't see JF being as good as people think

Springs O looked rough in that first quarter but they turned it up against a very good Dale defense! HS D is very nasty and their backs are tough as nails. What tiy think @springer76? Laney or #19 at QB? Both looked darn impressive at times.

I don't really remember but I know they had a nice power back. #31 was the back that caught my eye. Small and shifty! Billy Kemp had a nice game and Tyree from TD is the real deal!

After what I saw Courtland do to 5-A Mt. View tonight, the Louisa/Courtland game might just be the game of the year right out of the gate! Not going to sugar coat anything or use big words I might not understand, but in my 30 years of Cougar football, this might be the most physical team that JC has fielded. The RB's are just solid, physical and darn good, add in the 6-0 230 pound bull dozer I recently spoke of and the three headed monster has be revived. The QB is a dual threat kid (youngster), fast with an above average arm that just needs some polishing as he missed a couple open throw's. CT for once ran 4 or 5 QB designed keepers for 15-20 yards each time, nice plays that Mt. View did not contain. The defense is solid but has the most youngsters, D-line is very stout, but LB play will be a learn as you go process. The backers have real nice size and can move, just need to read the plays and cover the tightend in the middle, gave up 3 easy catches to him.The DB's have some quickness, are very physical as they laid out a few guys tonight. Defense forced a fumble and had two INT's. To my delight the O-line was anchored by to 300 pound tackles each over 6-2 and the center tipped the scales at a modest 6-1 340 the center!! and both guards are in the 5-11/6-0 220 -225 pound range. The D-line comes in a tad lighter.

Louisa is good. Excellent on defense and showed promise on offense.

With that said, this was a scrimmage. JF ran the offense rotating through 3 different QB's and pulled the best producing one because of a slight injury. He didn't even play when the clock was running.

James Wood could beat Sherando. I know it's only happened twice since Sherando opened in 1993, but the games are usually either blowouts or games that come down to the wire, regardless of the record of either team.

Yes sir, and you brought us back to the topic, way down in Class 1 is a game that may define a season. Sussex and Essex. Both teams are expected to be special this season. A win or a loss might reveal who is for real. I would say that Essex is a favorite, but it's really hard to make a pick on the first game of the year and one this close.

I like the topic of discussion.....always interesting to see where people think upsets will happen at. Of these games......I like GW, SR, and Salem, and C-Ville ....but you never know and that is the beauty of the game. There are a lot of great games to look forward to, and I would buy tickets right now for the Heritage/ Appomattox game in week #3 if they let me. Hoping the rain holds off tonight to catch a little scrimmage action.

The best way to beat JF is to shut their running backs down, with that being said I take that Louisa did well of stopping the run?

Bassett over Rustburg. The Bassett Bengals are under a new regime and I think they'll be ready to play. Lookout for the Bengals this season. I'm a MV fan first but the Bengals are going to surprise some folks.
IMO, this game is very interesting. Haven't played each other recently, and both teams feel like they have a lot to prove. I think this could be a great game

Great games are not just the powerhouse teams. I agree with both of you...these teams will have the "chip on the shoulder" mentality. And will be out to prove the doubters wrong.
