I don't really believe that G5 prefer not to host a big name program to come to their stadium, however since the motivation is for monies received than it may be better financially to take the payoff.
Since I am not privy to these negotiations, I am making an educated guess, and would not presume that I know the definitive answer.
Yeah, same here. I would think the G5 program makes more from the payoff than if they had a home game. More money and getting thumped in the relative obscurity of the P4 stadium instead of in front of your home fans seems like a win-win.

East Carolina pretty well built their program in the '70s, '80s and into the '90s by going on the road and playing bigger programs for homecoming or OOC games. They became a dangerous team because the revenue they received and the exposure helped them recruit better than the other teams in their conference. Southern Miss did the same thing. I remember Frank Howard saying he would never schedule East Carolina or Southern Miss because they were two teams that would come in and beat you at home on homecoming.

I almost feel the same about Citadel. 😄

"Shutting the F up is free too. "

Before you get mad, its a line from Deadpool and Wolverine. Hysterical movie.

What you say is true, though. I consider my low threshold a failing. :)
I have always liked Hugh Jackman. He should have been picked for Bond. But I guess an Aussie wouldn't do.

I don't think they are part of the USC system. Their problems were about 10 years ago. They only have about 2600 students so playing them in football is sort of embarrassing. I don't think P4 programs should be allowed to play any school that small.
University of Tulsa has 2400. Wake Forest only has 5400 undergrad.

I think it is ridiculous and shameful that any SEC team would play a football game against a team from a school with enrollment less than some large high schools. This is akin to Byrnes playing a game against a middle school.
Nope, that's not the comparison at all. These are all college students and college athletes, not high schoolers playing middle schoolers.

I think the Citadel loss was after Spurrier had retired/quit and was also the year we had a walk-on at QB...and not like a surprisingly good walk-on who took the league by storm. We were flat-out awful that season, in every way. A team with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and they still only beat us by 1. That tells you what it usually takes to level the field.

Yes, I know there's usually a win for the FCS teams somewhere...rarely over a good FBS team. They usually pick off someone who is struggling, like our terrible 2015 team.. But the overall average margin of victory for FBS teams is around 30 points. They are just ridiculous games for the most part.
That Carolina team nearly beat #1 Clemson the next week.

You might want to share your research with Mississippi State because they played at Southern Miss this past weekend. And they're gonna do it again in 2030.
Carolina currently has a game scheduled at Appalachian State in 2033.

OK, Byrnes playing McCormick County. Both are high schools.

And if McCormick wanted to schedule that game, more power to them. Lower classification high schools can be competitive against higher classification high schools just like FCS vs FBS. For example, North Augusta (AAAA) plays Strom Thurmond (AA) next week. That's an annual rivalry that is always competitive.

I hate these games. Football is very much a game of emotion; there's no glory for the players to really try to dominate a much lesser opponent, they really just want the other team to lay down so everyone can do their job and go home. The converse is also true; the lesser opponent can sense that and try to take advantage of it. This for many of them will be a high point in their lives, a chance for glory, and will10 is right; these are college athletes.

As is the norm in these types of games, SC State will walk away with a loss and a huge chunk of money.

However, I recall SC State having significant financial and accreditation issues that resulted in SC State being absorbed into the USC system.

Am I wrong about this, are they still separate entities, or can someone explain how the two Universities are organized in a way that would make USC paying SC State make sense?
SC State has always been their own entity. They had financial issues in 2015 but they remained independent institution. The State Legislature replaced their Board and that’s about the last I heard of it a decade ago.

Historically we’ve paid the in state schools significantly less. SC State and Wofford esq games were closer to $250k whereas florida atlantics were about a million. No telling what the ranges are these days though.

I'm sure the lower travel costs for in-state teams make them a bargain for us. I don't know, but I assume that we either cover their travel costs or provide them a guaranteed payout, so, playing a team that can bus in from Orangeburg (or Greenville, Spartanburg, or Charleston) instead of flying in from who-knows-where makes that payout money go a lot further. As I said before, if the plan is to schedule an FCS team anyway, I'd much rather pay that money to an in-state program than fly one in from Long Island or Louisiana.

Hopefully the starters won't have to play very long. I don't see beamer running up the score like some of the scores I've seen today.
