The USGS site is great. Lots of interesting stuff on there, including the earthquake map.

I saw streamflow and I thought it was gonna be about how to maintain a steady, accurate stream while throwin' a wazzer when drunk.

Over 200 river gauges in Kentucky updated every 4 hours. Came in handy when I used to kayak. Height and flow rates. Thought I’d share this given the flooding threat this weekend.

Years ago, I talked to some USGS guys working on the satcom system at one of the streamflow sites on Dix River. It was just downstream from the bridge along Hwy 52 between Lancaster & Danville. It consisted of a tall stone building with a metal walkway from the bank to the structure. It had a yagi antenna pointing to one of the GOES satellites at that time. I'm guessing they still use the GOES system.

I remember that one and the dirt path down to it and the river. I used it for kayaking that stretch from above Hanging Fork to Rankin’s farm downstream. It washed away in flooding years ago, after last reporting over 40,000 cubic feet per second. The new one is mounted directly to the bridge and I pass it regularly. Small world. Saw a mink down there twice. Too old for whitewater now.

Got one of those on Elkhorn Creek at Bryan Station and Briar Hill road just down from me.

I didn't know the original one had washed away! I'm getting a fishing license this year for the first time in 20+ years, so I'll give a look when I'm down that way. Speaking of minks, I was fishing upstream from there, about halfway to the Dix River/Hanging Fork Creek confluence, when I heard the damndest commotion on a steep wooded bank across the river. I stopped for a few seconds & two minks rolled down the bank to the water's edge, having one hell of a fight. They went at for about a minute longer & then one just slinked away up river. Never seen or heard anything like that before or since!

Wow. I saw an otter at Cat Hole Bend upstream once. Could not believe my eyes. Turns out the f&w dept. turned it loose there two years earlier, probably relocated away from a fishery. Loved your mink story. They move slow and don’t look like much when wet. I probably saw the same one twice.
