Pretty cool to host Chicago tomorrow night here - expecting 35k+ and ESPN 2. I think their run ends though. Apparently Schweinsteiger is playing.

Also, pretty improbable to win 4 coin flips in a row and host Cleveland, Louisville, Columbus, and now Chicago. Winner plays the Atlanta/Miami winner.

Actually 3: Cincy, Sacramento, and Miami. Last lower division team left (likely anyone that wins this week) gets like $15k. An amateur team just got knocked out last week.

I think I assumed they already had a team for some reason.

Was the amateur team the bunch from Baltimore?

yes, a great soccer podcast called "total soccer show" did a good feature on them.

As a note, if you like US soccer (pro teams, usmnt, and americans abroad) IMO "the total soccer show" is the best podcast. 4-5 days a week and one of the hosts, taylor rockwell is a centre grad and played soccer at centre.

All good things must come to an end....

"There’s no way around this – if you’re a cable subscriber, you lose with the Premier League Pass, especially if you’re a fan of a club that wasn’t on TV all that much this season (sorry, Stoke City fans!). If you’re a Premier League fan that’s already cut the cord, you can pay your $50 for the Premier League Pass, but you won’t be getting every match – in fact, you might only have access to something like a quarter of your favorite club’s matches."

No more Premier League Pass

If I am a GM of a soccer team I am dispatching scouts all through central and South America to identify 16-20 year olds with talent and explosiveness. I then invest heavily in a training facility to try and get and produce local homegrown guys. Just look at Atlantas Miguel Almiron. I'd rather get 3-5 years from a guy who is gonna eventually move on and play in europes top 5 leagues than a guy who is 35 and I'll be lucky to get 5 years out of him at all.

Im just getting into soccer more lately. Ive always loved the world cup but now im trying to go well beyond that. The rules are a bit tricky to me especially offsides but im starting to figure it out. What i dont understand is the different levels of leagues. I dont know what is the top leagues and how the mls and fc Cincinnati team fits into that. I also dont understand players being on loan from other teams. Is the premier league the best league? I just dont understand how teams dont want to finish in the bottom standings because they get eliminated eventually and the top teams go to another bracket. Just strange to me but im very interested. I know this post is jumbled to say the least but any clarity to some of this stuff would be awesome

Ok, Im your man because I just went through this. Soccer in every country outside of the US is set up kinda like MLB baseball is. You have MLB then AAA, then AA, then A.

So in the US the top league is called Major League Soccer. The AAA version of that league is the NASL. the "USL" is essentially the next down. Think of it as a tier system... In the US its like this:

MLS
/
NASL
/
USL

FC Cincy is in the USL. The Chicago Fire are like 2nd place in the East division of the MLS. What happened last night would like if the Lexington Legends beat the New York Yankees.

Now the premiere league in Europe goes like this:

Premiere League
/
Chamionship Flight
/
1st Division
/
2nd Division
etc...

So everyone in Europe has whats called Promotion and relegation. What this means is that the teams that come in the bottom 3 places ( 18th, 19th and 20th in the Premiere League) are bumped down to the Championship Flight. The same thing occurs in all 7 divisions of the league. Then, the top 3 teams in the Championship flight move up to the premiere league. So this year Hull City, Middlesobrough, and Sunderland all got "relegated" to a league down while Newcastle United, Brighton, and Huddersfield Town all got promoted to the Premiere League. Why is this important? MONEY!. Due to media deals each team in the PL gets a check for about 100 million dollars. That makes soooo much of a difference for smaller clubs. This same thing happens in ever domestic league in the work except the US. So there is no "tanking" in soccer.

Basically how loans work is like this. If a team has a player that either isnt good enough to break into the starting rotation what that team can do is put him up for loan. This often happens to really young players with promise that arent good enough to play for a big team like Chelsea FC. So Chelsea doesnt want to sell the player, but they want him to get experience so they will loan him for 1 year or 2 years to a club the player can get more playing time. During that year or 2 years, the team that receives the player pay his weekly wage bill. So if I played for Chelsea and was loaned to Crystal Palace, Crystal Palace pays my wages for the time I am with them. When that expires, I go back to Chelsea.

As far as quality of leagues.

The Premiere League is the most wealthy and visible. But IMO The premiere league lacks elite technical ability....they make up for it though by being by far the most physical league. The league lacks top tier clubs, but due to clubs being richer, they have more depth, but not by much IMO.

The Spanish League, La Liga, IMO is the best. Real Madrid and Barcelona are just soo stacked. Its a very technical league. Much more intricate play and build up with a overall higher quality of play IMO.

The Bundesliga is more like the spanish league than the premiere league. Just instead of having 2 massive teams they have 1 in Bayern Munich. Again, much more technical league and much better to watch IMO than the premiere league.

Serie A is in italy. I love this league. The passion... wow... But it only is televised on BeIn Sports. This is an extremely tactical league. Juventus is dominating it now, but recent investments have helped out teams like Roma, Lazio, Inter Milan and AC Milan (my fav team).

The Premiere League I would equate to watching a John Calipari offense. RElies a lot on individual talent and transition goals/ long balls over the top.

Bundesliga and La Liga is like watching UCLA's offense or Wichita State. Intricate offenses that include tons of skill, technique and creative-ness.

Cincy FC is the talk of the town. I think one of the things they have going for them now is it is very inexpensive to take the family. They have an environment right now where it is an easy thing for a Family of 4 to do. I don't know if this dynamic changes if and when they get a new stadium. If they can build the new stadium and keep pricing for the fans at the same levels Cincy FC could kill it. But if the new stadium jacks up pricing Cincy FC could lose momentum.

No. USL & NASL now on equal tier with USL far stronger financially. NASL used to be #2 & USL #3. FCC moved from NASL to USL after just one year when USL moved up to equal. NASL practically folded over the winter. I mean USL is 30 teams & NASL is just 9.

This system basically creates great quality wealthy teams at the expense of balance with weaker teams having practically zero chance to win many games. Much like the Yankees were in baseball before revenue sharing came to MLB.

MSL is built on the model of other N.Am. sports leagues with drafting and TV money sharing. Once you allowed in the club & pay your membership fee, you're in & no relegation. It's intended to create balance & broad interest - at the expense of greatness. Net, unlikely to ever have teams as good as the top Euro ones. But overall talent could ultimately exceed. Ultimately could be a very long time.

Note that England has 20 top tier clubs for a country of around 50M people (Spain 20 for 40M.). To have proportionately as many for USA & Canada, would be about 140 teams.

I doubt FFC owners are trying to get into MSL to keep prices the same. Currently $10-30/game. Looked at Crew prices: $25-70.

OK here's where it starts to get a little tricky. Most of the time the majority of the league games for each country in Europe will occur on the weekend. However with the advancement in media you were starting to get more league league games occurring during the week but there is a competition called the UEFA champions league. How it works without getting into too much detail is basically the top 4 teams of every country's league qualify for what's called the champions league. It's the best of the best. These games occur during the week. The winner is viewed as the champions of Europe and because Europe is viewed as the best, they are the champions of the world.

In Europe there is basically no draft it is the highest bidder. Clubs also have a Stabley S-t a used Academy where they take in a really young kids and try and develop them to become really good players for their team. That makes it a tad bit cheaper. For example Messi was identified at the age of 13 and was in FC Barcelonas youth academy and has remained there his entire career. Real Madrid just broke a world record for youth player that plays for Flamengo in Brazil named Vinicius Junior. Real Madrid paid 45 million for the 16 year old. The Contract however will allow him to remain in Brazil until he is 18 and then he will join Real Madrid.

Awesome. Whrn does this tournament take place and who is the favorite to win it?

It is essentially a process like the world cup. Cities bid on it and then the UEFA committee decides who gets to host. This past year it was in Wales. This coming year it is hosted in Kiev,Ukraine. Ye year after that it is down to either Madrid, Spain or Baku, Azerbaijan.

Id say the favorite has to be Real Madrid. They are the first ever 2 time champ. But in general every year you champion comes from one of Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus... Recently Premiere League teams have struggled in the UCL but I could see with the money behind Chelsea, Manchester City and Man United them making some noise.

AC Milan used to be a MAJOR player in the UCL as well as Inter Milan. But recently they have struggle but both just were bought by the Chinese and have had an influx of money.

Also, the Champions League takes place the same time as the season is going on.

So like Leagues start in August and end in May. The results of the prior year dictates who qualifies for the UCL. So this past year Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City and Liverpool were 1-4 in the Premier League so they qualified. it all goes on at the same time. The Champions league starts in September. From Sept-December the group stage of the tourney is played on I believe tuesdays and wednesdays through the week. There are 8 groups of 4. Each team plays the other 3 teams both home and away. The 2 teams with the most points advance to the knockout stage which starts in February. In the knockout stage the 2 teams playing play twice, once on each teams home field. They go on the aggregate score of both games. So If Team A beats team b 2-0 in the first leg, and then Team B beats team A 3-0 in the 2nd leg, Team B win 3-2. The hiccup is that away goals are weighted more. So if Team A plays at home and wins 2-1, and then Team B wins the 2nd leg 1-0 at their place, Team B advances because although the aggregate score is 2-2, Team B scored an "away goal".

The final however is just 1 game.

Germany is scccccaaaarrryyy. Their friggin C team is so good. I love Timo Werner, gonna be a special special player. Amin Younes is so good too. Goretzka is soo creative and Kimmich is a young Phillip Lahm. But the guy who I really am a huge fan of this Confed Cup is Sebastian Rudy. Talk about an anchor in the midfield....
