Vanderbilt has hired former NBA veteran Jerry Stackhouse to be its next coach, the university announced on Friday.

"I am extremely excited to join the Vanderbilt family and build on the incredible accomplishments of its athletics program and men's basketball program," Stackhouse said in a statement. "I look forward to furthering Vanderbilt's unique approach to athletics -- blending a powerhouse competitive spirit with elite academics to holistically develop talented student-athletes and celebrate victories on and off the court."

I can't see this working out for a variety of reasons. "Unique approach?" You mean going to class and studying while also playing basketball? Unique, indeed.

Someone please explain how Kenny Payne is still an assistant coach and never a candidate for another job? You would think an assistant coach at the "gold standard" program would be a hot name. It seems to be the opposite. I understand being selective but when you name is never mentioned with power 5 programs you have to wonder if he even wants to be a head coach.

Well according to sUcK fans he would have been a great head coach for Louisville so I think he is head coach in waiting for when Calipari is gone. If sUcK doesn’t hire him then all the sUcK assclowns will have some explaining to do.

why would KP want to do that? He's making a million a year to sit on the bench and get fat with little or no accountability. Such a sweet deal.

You do know that Kenny’s son is going to be a walk on at UK? He’s trying to secure somehow a spot in the NBA draft. Kenny can’t coach him so he might as well hang on to Calimari’s coattails.

I’ve been told that Kenny Payne doesn’t “interview well”. I’m not sure how much to believe about that. Also the schools that might be interested in him are smaller D1 schools that won’t pay what he is making at uahkay.

Interesting hire. The last 2-3 years of Stallings and then the 3 seasons of Bryce Drew have nuked the program. There is nowhere to go but up. Vandy can have a nice niche in Nashville if the basketball program gets back on track.

Payne is too fat to stand up and coach.

Guys, look at Chunky's coaching tree!! Or lack thereof. I have stated this for years, his assistants arent sought after and when they do leave, they very rarely have success. Thats not a coincidence!!!!

Stack is a badass. Envisioning a press conference next year after Vandy beats UK with Cow bitching about the refs when Stack barges in ala John Chaney and makes Cal wet himself.
