This poll is not solely in response to the Duke/Taylor match. I have always thought they were a terrible way to determine a winner. I don't have a perfect solution but with all the great wrestling minds on here, I'm sure someone could come up with something. Until there is a change, we'll continue to see guys like Taylor and Ferrari stall for 9 minutes, hoping to win in ride outs. That is, as long as the Refs refuse to call stalling as defined in the current rules.

I’d much prefer to see the SV period go on without a time limit… just keep going until someone gets a takedown…

… if the counter argument is that could go on forever, then have it be that if no one has scored in the first couple of minutes, then it changes to freestyle rules where a pushout wins it!

Let's call them what they are: stall-outs.

30 sec isn't nearly long enough. Top never attempts to turn, just cling. Everybody knows it, and seeing as though top stalling never gets called (except for the automatic 5-counts), the refs are in on the joke.

Make it long enough that top is expected to score, and/or there's a reasonable amount of time to score from feet after an escape -- 1:00 minimum. Or make it zero. Either way would be better than this.

Someone on this board once suggested that a point should be awarded to the wrestler with either the most shot attempts or take downs and not riding time.

How about having a step out rule in overtime which would force more action on their feet.

Do away with riding time deciding the match. If tied to to another ot.

Have one, three minute SV period. If tied at the conclusion the following rules are used to determine a winner:

1. First Takedown
2. First Near fall
3. First reversal
4. First non escape point
5. Fewest stalling calls
6. wrestler with the last stalling call loses
7. riding time
8. Wrestler with a losing challenge loses
9. If non of the above has determined a winner, both wrestlers are disqualified including in tournaments and are eliminated from the tournament. Also, in this case, the referees are suspended for the next decade for allowing this farce to happen.

Most takedowns? Maybe, need to think about that.

Shot attempts? Just wait until the refs have to determine what qualifies/doesn't qualify as a shot attempt, and the scorekeeper is the only one in the arena knowing the count until after the match ends. The one benefit: everybody in the arena will have time for a bathroom break while it gets sorted out.

Should be highest scoring move, followed by # of highest scoring moves if both wrestlers have highest scoring move. If both wrestlers have same # of highest scoring move, it should be second highest scoring move, then # of second highest scoring moves. So on..... If wrestlers are still tied after going through all scoring moves, first score greater than an escape wins. If still tied, wrestler with fewer stall calls wins. If still tied, unlimited SV period where first score wins, but a mandatory stall call (i.e., more passive wrestler) made after 30 seconds of wrestling with no score (if wrestlers involved in scramble, call will be made after conclusion of scramble when conclusion is a stalemate call). When action resumes, there will be another mandatory stall call after 30 seconds..... etc...

I think this has some real promise if you eliminate 8 & 9. All provide incentive for wrestling to score.

How about whoever has the most riding time at the end of regulation wins if no score in first overtime

Who gives a crap about "riding time" or prioritizing as a means to winning over actually scoring??? Have you watched how most of this bs "riding time" is accumulated? Most of it comes from hanging on for dear life... running wrestlers off the mat.... "thigh pry" rides.... and a whole lot of bs that has zero to do with breaking the other wrestler down, attempting to turn the other wrestler and score via exposure points. Just insanely absurd to put more priority on bs rides than actual scoring.

I wish we could go back to if there is a tie match after the first TB, go back to a 2:00 SV. But there is no perfect way in figuring it out. I wish they had a shot clock at this level. Maybe would alleviate some of these issues with OT.

During regulation, you must accumulate one takedown or committed shot with leg control (I.e. have a hold of leg, ankle etc for 3 seconds). If it goes to TB, and only one guy has a committed shot, that wrestler starts TB with a point.

Criteria all the way. Don’t care what, but keep it simple, and always have someone winning, it really does force action. The freestyle brain trust got this one right. Only change I’d make is to make criteria, in the event of a tie, worth 1 pt. That underline nonsense is whack.

The team points for OT wins should be less than regular time, even advancement points in tournaments. Maybe a 2 point deduction for going to OT. 🤷‍♂️

For every guy "hanging on for dear life" there's a guy who can't escape for dear life. This is going to get worse as you get more and more kids who learn catch and release from freestyle and don't learn mat wrestling.

As a metaphor for conquest, wrestling should value the acquisition and maintenance of control.

Incentives matter. It's hard to turn a guy, and now there's less incentive. There's more to wrestling than takedowns. Would you rather watch Mesenbrink run a take down clinic and get a tech (which should have been increased to 18 or 20 w/ the 3pt takedown) or see him turning guys alike he's doing this year?

The pin is still the objective of wrestling (ask Davis) and it and the full scope of mat skills are being reduced by the 3pt TD and the TF.

If constant point scoring is so great, why aren't you watching basketball? It seems like a lot of people like soccer and hockey, and unless there's a disparity, they are low scoring affairs.

Not sure why so little respect for good top position wrestling. Isn't it true that many close matches start OT at 1-1 because each wrestler got their respective escape point.... because riding is hard to do? Aren't full period rideouts relatively rare... because riding is hard to do? Isn't top position trying to prohibit the opponent from scoring and trying to get in position to score near fall as exciting as 2 minutes of hand fighting and collar ties?

Agree, I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I respect riding/keeping a guy down even if it doesn’t result in turning. Pretty sure there was a riding time point back when I was in high school in the early 70s. My only caveat is double boots; that’s a bull **** ride that should be eliminated.
