Anyone seen it yet? I'm going tomorrow.

What are your thoughts on it (particularly if you're familiar with the book)? :)
Just saw it and will post my review shortly in the “Film Fans - Greatest Movies” thread here inThe Paddock. In sum, I really liked it. Very ambitious..

Did "Dune Day" and rewatched the Original then the New one. Enjoyed the New one with the new Cinema effects and sound. Did not read the book so not sure if either followed the book path and wished the New was not a 2 Part Movie.

I watched it on HBOMax at 3am Friday morning as that's when they are released. I prefer the Kyle McGloughlin original as I just can't stand Jason Mo-bambi. The two-part crap was very disappointing and came just as the movie got better when bambi died.

I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just film it all at the same time and release year after year.
ala Lord of the Rings style. Would’ve been nice if that lined up, but looks like not. Will probably have to wait close to 3 years if they aren’t already well underway. Warner Bros. really mishandled the Justice League franchise so hopefully they get this right.

Initial thoughts, after my first viewing:

I like it, but I think it suffers from the exact same problems Lynch's version does: there's simply not enough runtime to include everything that's essential (the dinner scene and subplot involving the Atreides traitor in particular), and as a result, to me at least, it feels terribly rushed and fragmented. Maybe it'll sit better upon subsequent viewings.

At the very least, I hope it causes sales of the book to surge.

I enjoy science fiction. But I remember trying to read Dune years ago and thought it was the most incomprehensible convoluted book I ever tried to read maybe got through 25% of it. Was like Game of Thrones all jammed into one book. Sorry, it just wasn't my cup of tea

It was an okay movie. Like, yeah, I saw it but I will never watch it again. It's not rewatchable. There arent any memorable scenes that anyone will be watching on youtube for years to come. For all the ish he talked about Star Wars and the MCU, he didn't come up with one scene that will be rewatched for years to come. It's a long, boring, unremarkable movie. Blade Runner 2049 is his best movie. It's so underrated. This is probably his worst movie. I heard several people exiting my showing say it was the worst movie they've ever seen. One couple walked out and met their friends at the door when it ended. Now, I know this movie wasn't made for those people to begin with. But, he's trying to capture that audience and he can't do it because he's not that kind of filmmaker with that kind of script. the kind that draws a larger, more commercial audience.

The thought did cross my mind though while watching it.... I haven't read the books. But, I wondered during my showing if people who actually read the books we're loving it or if it lived up to their expectations. It felt like a movie made for fans of the book only.

Blade Runner is on my list to see. Really liked Arrival.

It's a waste. Basically a "to be continued" without a promise for a conclusion. If you have hbomax just watch it there.

I've read the extent of the series written by Frank Herbert, and I thought it was a competent presentation of Dune and definitely worth a watch. The diehards will be upset by the paltry description of a good number of the plot arcs, but one ought to expect that in a film adaptation. The cinematography is great, and I was surprised that I didn't hate the cast. The conclusion is a bit empty. It made sense to have it there given it's a two parter.

Overall, I'd give it a 8/10.

His Bladerunner was terrible. Yikes. Is this going to suck even worse?

When you remake an all time classic like Bladerunner . . . there are bound to be comparisons, and most likely will not be kind to the imitator, so lets just say you must have a lot of confidence in your ability as a director.

I thought the first half, which felt like a continuation of the original, was really well done. The second half felt like they were trying to build a new Matrixy franchise and like a completely separate product. The original is my all time favorite movie so I’m no where near unbiased but I did not dig it. Excited still to see Dune. Visually what I’ve seen so far has been really impressive.

The art of filmmaking has plummeted so far that even bland unimaginative slop like this gets a sequel. The last 10-15 years has been the dark ages if you're looking for well made movies with comprehensible script writing and talented directing.

The sequel to Sicarrio began fabulously then imploded into a quasi-superhero idiocy. It was like they had a great idea then descended into paint by numbers money grabbing. If it wasn't for the Coen Brothers this whole century would be a wash.

thank the mcu... DV is one of the better directors out there. Always look forward to his movies. Now it will be 6 years, at least before we see an original movie from him.

I read it 35+ years ago. Only remember a bit. But, I know you have to trudge through that first 1/4, as Herbert just kind of assumes you know what he is talking about. Then, the book explodes and is one of the best sci-fi books I have read.

I remember being disappointed with Lynch’s version, but back then the story was still fresh for me.

Saw the new one last night. I loved it. The look and sound of the movie is perfect and the acting superb. I highly recommend it. The medieval feel and toughness of the story was captured well and the score worked perfectly. It certainly left me wanted Part II right now.

Not a remake, but a sequel.

I liked the Blade Runner sequel and Arrival as well. Not a fan of the Dune book, tried reading it, but I will check out the film.

The Dune novel was great and the original movie was good but this new movie remake is horrible. I have no idea what people who like it are looking at? Jason Mo-bambie dying for no reason at all in one of the worst choreographed fights ever filmed? Seriously, the fight sequences look like some made for TV JAG episode. Awful movie that underscores how terrible films are made now and I am a huge Villeneuve fan. David Lynch's version, while flawed at times, runs rings around this mess.

Saw it today. I thought it was pretty good. Clearly building towards the sequel. If you thought it was bad you’re trying too hard.

My opinion-
I watched it. To me it's simply a microwaved remake. Better graphics/fx, but poorer script and continuity and less ambitious than the first. Not much soul to it.

Pretty at times, but not even close to as good as Rogue One in terms of cinematography. I liked the casting choices. Good actors, but not much depth in development of the characters in the story. There are decent scenes but it falls pretty flat as it is choppy.

Might be great for someone that's never read the stories or seen the first attempts at representing the story. It's like a lot of other remakes and sequels of the last 10-12 years, so audiences new to this may really like it. To me the quality of movies is diminishing pretty rapidly as the tech gets better, and that's very disappointing.

I was disappointed. As some others said it was just getting interesting (was kinda boring at times) and then it ended abruptly. I didn't know that it was a multi part movie going in (I try not to watch or read to much about new releases). So I was very disappointed with where it ended.

Just Meh. I think that the average viewer is missing so much of the plot and understanding of the worlds unless you have read the book. Very slow pace. Other than special effects and some acting choices, I prefer the older version.

Watched it on HBO. Glad I didn’t waste $$ going out to see it.

The original film was awful. It made zero sense, was poorly edited and the acting was terrible. But something drew us to it to watch it over and over.

Perhaps because IT HAD AN ENDING. No matter how badly it was presented.

This version was MUCH better acted, made a bit more sense and not surprisingly, the s/fx were better. But it’s not worth waiting 2 years to see the rest of it. More Hollywood stupidity.
