The cost of waiting until 2017. Of course it is going to cost $6 million to fire Stoops at the end of this season. Get the $12 million number out of your head because it will still cost $6 million next year so the net (real) figure is $6 million now. What I want to talk about is the cost of waiting till 2017. This all assumes there is not a miraculous turnaround of this season.
The fans are done. Attendance will hover between 30,000 and 40,000 the rest of this year if things continue the way they have gone so far. The season ticket sales process over the spring and summer will be a disaster for 2017 with the fans knowing it is just a year till we fire Stoops. So we drop down to an average of 30,000 fans for 2017 maybe.
Recruiting will tank and there will be transfers. There will also be injuries since a team that isn't playing hard is liable to get hurt. The development will suffer as well since I imagine some of our better coaches will abandon ship after this season is over and they see the writing on the wall. This means our roster will be even worse than it already is.
So we go out in December of 2017 and start looking for a coach with a crap roster and an absentee fanbase. We will at least have upgraded facilities, but it is still going to be tough to go sell this university under those circumstances.
