And is true they filmed some Rudy scenes. How was that experience? Did you boo? 😂

Playing Hail to the Lion. Great movie blunder! ND vs GaTech but it’s our song. lol.
That is an all time classic blunder. The first time I watched the movie and heard Hail to the Lion it was bizarre. At first I was thinking we were playing them but then I realized we never played them in the mid 70s except the Gator Bowl.

It was the '92 game in the snow that didn't end well for us. ND scores on a 4th and goal pass to Jerome Bettis (who I grew to like since he became a Steeler but how is he getting open?) with 20 seconds left then get the two point conversion on a pass to Reggie Brooks to beat us 17-16. Clearly a big career highlight for Rick Mirer their QB. Brutal.

I was at the game. Very cold. We played well until the final ND drive (sound familiar?)
I do not remember anything related to Rudy during the game. At their pep rally the night before the actor who played Rudy led cheers. It was all strange to me. The movie was not something to think about.
After the game the ND fans stormed the field and tore down a gaolpost. I walked onto the field and had difficulty staying upright with all the pushing and then narrowly avoided the falling goal post.
If you watch the film of the game, it looks like Brooks may not have clearly caught the conversion pass. No replay then. I tell this to my ND friend and he gets mad.

Yes, I was there ('92 as others have said). My cousin and his wife were on the faculty at ND. She was the choir director and organist at the Basilica. The organ music playing the ND fight song at the opening of the NBC telecasts for many years was her. Cousin was a professor of Organ and Sacred Music there for over 30 years.

Anyway, on Friday before the game, she had given me a tour of the Basilica and other areas of campus while Cousin was busy with classes. As I was walking from the Basilica toward the main part of campus, I walked between 2 huge hedges, and directly into a shot they were filming. I hear "CUT!" and why isn't that blocked off? or something like that. I stood there like a tourist for a couple seconds trying to figure out what was what, then I remembered they had told me this movie was being shot on campus. As the crew glared at me, I retreated back through the hedges (ala Home Simpson?!) and found another route.

I remember that at halftime they announced something about the filming taking place, but I didn't really pay attention. I think they were encouraging the crowd to cheer or roar or whatever. It wasn't until the film came out that I saw that they captured our band! Non-football fans as editors, I suppose.

My tickets were on about the 2 yard line where ND scored the go-ahead points at the end of the game. Heart-breaker for sure. A tremendous game overall. PSU just wasn't good that season after a tremendous '91 season and with lots of high expectations coming into '92. Sort of like 2025 after 2024 in some ways. Anyway, it was a great weekend with my cousin and his now late wife. Wonderful people both.

Agreed. That catch definitely was reviewable.

It was a great series and the game always meant a lot. I was furious when Brooks caught that pass. That was the way 92 went. Had Miami beat. They did nothing all game and then John Sacca throws a pick six.

1992 The blue band is in the movie, when Rudy’s dad walks into the stadium
Yea. “This is the greatest sight these eyes have ever seen”. Watching Penn state blue band and hearing the Penn state fight song. That was too funny in the movie. Too bad Penn state didn’t play them in the 70’s when Rudy went there. 🤣

It was strange that we were ranked so high that year. Tony Sacca had graduated after the very good 1991 season and John was the qb starting his first year. . He wasn’t that good. Oj mcduffie was good but with John not great and Richie Anderson was ok. Both had like 950 yards each that year.

I think they expected Kerry Collins to be the QB, but he broke a thumb or a bone in his throwing hand just before camp, if I recall. John was serviceable against the lesser opponents to start the season, but that panicked pick six vs Miami changed the season.
Anderson was ahead of Kijana that season, too. I remember Fran Ganter saying that had Anderson returned in '93 for his last year of eligibility, he would have started the season ahead of Kijana then as well. Richie was a good RB for us, but ultimately Kijana was an all-timer.

That catch was close but I doubt it gets overturned. The question is if it got trapped by his body and hit the ground.

I was at the Miami game that year and that loss sent us into a tail spin. I remember we got crushed by BYU in Utah then had a pathetic Bowl performance vs a Bill Walsh coached Stanford team.

I think the plan was to redshirt Sacca but didn't Tom Bill have drinking issues so we had to play Sacca sooner than joe wanted to. By the way Tony Sacca was a huge recruit and it came down to us and Notre Dame.

You’re talking about playing Tony sacca early, in the 80’s. Yea bill had to go to rehab in 1989.
1988 wasn’t good cause Thomas was out as well.
Funny thing about Notre dame, we had beaten them two years in a row before their snow bowl and even had a game winning field goal, which they were number 1 at that time.
this game came down to the end and Jerome Bettis, the bus, scored the touchdown. Which wouldn’t have been but Notre dame blocked a psu pat.
And imagine a head coach actually coaching wow.
“Lou Holtz did not hesitate – he drew up a play on the sidelines with Mirer and the rest is college football history.”

That was 1988 with Tony Sacca having to play as a freshman. That was the last time we lost to Rutgers. Think it was 21-16.

That was 91.
We opened with Cincy in 92, and only won 24-20.

For those that think struggling in the throwaway games doesn't show you anything....sometimes it does.

Won that game at Cincinnati with true freshman QB Wally Richardson starting. He led a late comeback to get the win.
Cincinnati opened their new and current stadium with that game. They were far improved over '91 and surprisingly gave us a tough game.
Wally redshirted in 93, I think. He was a pretty good QB, throwing to some very good WRs and teaming with some terrific RBs. Big, impressive Bowl wins in '95 (Auburn in the rain) and '96 (Texas in the Fiesta).

Is Wally still part of the program? I thought he had some kind of pretty big position related to the football program or athletic department.

His son at ND now. Another recruit Franklin couldn't land although probably just as well now because he would definitely bolt after the coaching change.

He is, or was until recently, the Director of the Football Lettermen's Club. He had some health issues in the last year or so, but I don't know details. Last I heard he was recovering, but again I don't know much about the situation.
I've met Wally and spent some time with him a while back. He's a good man.
