I wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA canceled the tournament ... all over the Coronavirus hoax.
If that turns out to be the case, we saved our best game for last.
It's not a hoax, but it's not the crisis the media is making it out to be. The virus is much more easily transmitted than flu. This is because of 3 things. First, it can survive without a vector. This means it can survive for up to 9 days on a surface where it can be transmitted to another person. Compared to flu where the virus will be dead within hours of being outside its host. Second, long latency period. Time of infection to time of first symptoms is typically 14 days. 10 or more of those days you can be spreading the virus. Compared to flu where this period is typically less than 72 hours. Third, many people are completely asymptomatic or only have minimal symptoms. Virus has symptoms from none to severe flu like symptoms. Compared to flu where only a tiny number are asymptomatic and most cases vary from average cold symptoms to severe flu like symptoms.
Best things you can do.
1. Assume you have come into contact with it already. Therefore wash your hands frequently, avoid unnecessary contact with infants, elderly, and those with lung disease such as COPD.
2. Avoid large gatherings, especially those where folks travel from several far away places.
3. If you have had contact with someone infected and you are worried about having it DO NOT go to the Emergency Room unless you are actively having symptoms that you think you would need to be hospitalized for. There is no specific treatment and there is no way to predict who will develop severe enough symptoms for hospitalization. Therefore it will be watchful waiting. If you go to hospital and have it, you are possibly bringing it to a location with high risk populations. If you don't, you are going to a place where those who have it are most likely to be and this increasing your exposure risk. Contact the health department for guidance first.
