Was this a travel?

No, it just looks like a travel.

The two steps a player is granted on a breakaway don't start until they have gathered the ball in their hands.

He takes one dribble, and it only looks like a travel because he takes 3 additional strides during the dribble. Once he collects the ball, he can only take two more steps, which is what happens.

No different then what Oweh did earlier in the game on his breakway.

That will, 100%, never ever ever get called, on a home team going for a breakaway dunk.

Truthfully, I don't mind it all that much though. Because he was going to get points anyways. They got the outlet pass, we were sort of caught sleeping, they earned the 2 points in my eyes. I more so hate when the calls happen when we actually DIDN'T do something wrong, or the opponents DID. Like how SEC teams are allowed extra levels of hacking.. that actually affect how well we can put points on the board. That's the **** they have to fix.

Happy feet on the way to a dunk at home? I cant even get mad because it's just never going to get called.

I watched on super slow motion and from the time he "gathers" the ball and has possession of the ball he took 3 steps.

Part of what you’re saying is why I think there should be 4 referees so they don’t have to run with the players in a fast break.

Did Cooper Flagg Walk, Double dribble and carry all at the same time on this breakaway dunk?

Absolutely it is. And in a prior era it would’ve been whistled immediately.

But today’s refs seem to have collectively decided they’re gonna allow an extra step or two on breakaways. Happens all the time nowadays and the refs just pretend they don’t see it.

This is another one where things have really changed. Used to be that would instantly be called double dribble when he grabbed the ball with two hands after his first dribble.

But today’s refs have come up with this new “gather step” concept that enables them to basically ignore the first dribble in that situation.

There’s a lot of talk about how well today’s players handle the ball. But part of the explanation for that is they’re simply now allowed to get away with so much more in the way of traveling, palming and double dribbles than in the past.

I believe it is.

Butler travels a lot on the catch on the perimeter too. He'll catch take two steps then put the ball down...the ball has to come down before the 2nd step

Flagg didn’t really double dribble.

His first touch was not when he had possession…it was considered (I think accurately) a deflection.

It is a walk and those of you who say it’s not just don’t know the game. There is no such thing as a gather step. That was made up in the nba to justify all of the walking that goes on in that league. I have been a ref for 48 years and would never let something like that go without calling it. It’s ridiculous that the game has devolved into nonsense like that, where something that blatant doesn’t get called. Those refs ought to turn in their whistles.

I agree with you...BUT, it is now the way things are called. You can take 1-2 steps while the ball is still being gathered and then take 2-3 more steps without it being a travel. This is bleeding over from the NBA. That is why you see so many doing the 2-step step back now. Again, I agree with you though.

The same was they missed the double dribble at Clemson.
I understand missing when two hands hit the ball on one dribble.
The dude at Clemson dribbled. Stopped. Couldn’t find anyone to pass to and started dribbling again.
Never seen that missed.

Yep, this is example of how the NBA’s influence can mess up ALL levels of basketball.

This all began in 2009 when the NBA created that "gather step" rule. Then FIBA felt pressured to follow suit and in 2017 legalized it for international ball. And soon enough college and high school refs decide to be like the big boys and allow extra gather steps too.

So now players at all levels around the world are blatantly traveling more ....just because the NBA doesn't like its stars getting called for it.
